My 2024 edition of a christmas ornament. In this update I show a process and jig for making the lantern windows without having to start with square stock. With this method I can use any irregular stock or branches to make the lantern body. I had to make a drilling jig to gain consistency and accuracy and it works great.

I decided to document my process for making this Quilter tool as it involved more than just woodturning. It involved the use of; table-saw, thickness sander, router table, bandsaw, and the lathe. The prep work took more work than the woodturning, it is a fun project and is sure to make a quilter's day to receive one as a gift.

Carole [provides feedback to woodturner on design of the quilt binding tool. Her experience with quilting and using tools to make that task more effective is fantastic. As a woodturner its easy to make a tool for a fiber artist but being a woodturner I have no idea if the tool is functional or not. Carole's comments on pro and con of the designs is invaluable to this woodturner.

    • @bertdelisle393
      @bertdelisle393 Před 27 dny

      @@jackimundymakes Thanks for watching, I use a few dabs of hot melt glue to hold the tea light in place. I have found that different woods move differently when the center is hollowed out, the hot glue takes up space so a slightly loose fit works perfectly. Just a couple small dabs does the trick.

    Thank you for an excellent video. Why do you use a jam chuck instead of using a slightly longer piece of wood and finishing the top next to a regular chuck

    • @bertdelisle393
      @bertdelisle393 Před 29 dny

      @@dalerussell7834 Thanks for watching. Good question, when I was first making these I used to do as you suggested but found that a lot of the off cuts I had were a bit too short and the wood was to nice to toss. I started using the jam chuck because I could turn and drill several blanks quickly and then use the same jam chuck on them to turn the outside details and top end quicker, easier, and more consistently. It works for me.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Actually I did look at the headstock before lifting the shield and there was no wood left spinning, everything had flown away and settled to the floor. When a wrong tool for the job is used, sometimes it gets the job done but sometimes it creates a hazardous situation. This exact scenario happened to me in high school shop class. The pieces that flew upward shattered the guard instantly, but along with my visor, saved my face from the hard impact. The pieces that flew downward had enough force to become lodged in the floor. I was only hit by one small chunk in the shoulder, which left a nice bruise. Wasn't a result of my actions (the lathe had been tampered with by another student) but I cleaned everything up, apologized to the shop teacher (we were tight so he didn't care at all), and I went home for the day; Enjoyed a crisp after-school underage beer to calm down.
