My favorite Christmas song performed by my favorite Christmas singer. I had a music class in High School and one of the choir kids asked about how they could improve their jazz phrasing... The teacher literally said, "go buy Nat King Cole album and listen to how Nat structures his words in a song, he'll teach you more than I ever will." Thank you so much for this, Merry Cristmas!

Nat King Cole has always been my favorite singer. I love old songs, (I’m 66 years young,) and singers, Sinatra, Tony Bennette, Fred Astaire, and Bing Crosby. I even go back to Al Jolson. They were all good for what they sang but I feel Nat could sing anything in any genre. He probably could rap if he was alive. His voice and his interpretation of the song he sang, even in a different language, were always dead on.

Thank you for the breakdown of what makes Nat's voice so rich, beautiful... His daughter, Natalie Cole grew up sitting by him playing piano and sitting alongside.. it was responsible for her successful contribution to 70's music.. her jump in music was the classic "This Will Be" and a gorgeous duo of them singing UNFORGETTABLE... thanks to technology, she produces a duo using black and white film.. very moving to see her adoration of this man we will always remember fondly. I agree, Bethany, that Nat's phrasing is superlative. I haven't heard the comparison before, but I think Angelina Jordan has this same ability to tell a story through phrasing. That's why, for both singers, the emotional transfer of their performances is so central. They are so skilled technically that they can focus on phrasing without worrying about vocal pyrotechnics -- and that makes their performances so honest and connected with the narrative they want to express.

I love your videos and the incredibly valuable gift of voice coaching info you share with us - thank you so much! I also love how much you love listening to your favorite singers. Your response is as wonderful as the singing itself. I wanted to add that part of the richness of Nat King Cole's voice was due to his chain-smoking 3 packs of Kool cigarettes a day. Sadly in 1965, NKC died of lung cancer. Here's some info I found online: "Cole was a heavy smoker of Kool menthol cigarettes; it was said that he believed that smoking up to three packs a day gave his voice the rich sound it had. He became a chain-smoker and smoking several cigarettes in rapid succession before a recording for that very purpose."

Nat King Cole was my mother's favorite singer. So when my father proposed to her, he sang her favorite Nat King Cole song, "Mona Lisa" to her and she had no choice but to accept. My father had a lovely baritone and sang to her often. They would dance in the living room, my father in his work clothes and Mom in her house dress and he would sing in her ear songs like "Unforgettable". I always think of my parents when I hear him. 🙏Please, please, please, would you do an analysis on Stardust by King Cole? It's in the top 3 of my all-time favorite songs (by any singer) -- except that each time I listen to it, it pops up to number 1! It's a gorgeous song and Cole's version is my favorite, because he has the good taste to largely leave it alone. He sings it straight, without a lot of embellishment. He doesn't have the big ego of many popular performers, feeling that he needs to take a song and make it his own somehow. It probably comes from the fact that he never really saw himself as a singer. He sang because the people liked it, but he was such a brilliant naturally-talented jazz pianist that he thought of himself primarily as an instrumentalist.

Not long ago, they reported a list of the Top 50 jazz singers of all time.
Ella was #1, Sinatra #2, Nat King Cole #3, and Billie Holiday #4, so you

    was Billie Holiday.

    • @ridgemanron
      @ridgemanron Pƙed rokem

@@jadezee6316 - Not sure where &who did the polling but I assume it
had to occur among people in the music industry who are truly
knowledgeable about jazz singers? To tell you the truth, I didn't
even consider Sinatra a jazz singer, feeling he was more of
what they used to call a 'crooner' like Bing Crosby. Even Nat
wasn't on my radar as a jazz singer but he was unique with that
voice of his. Ella and Billie, I would think 'jazz' for sure, having heard
them described as jazz singers by many sources. Personally, I
would have considered singers like Etta James & Peggy Lee
to be top level jazz singers with Amy Winehouse radically affecting
the genre much more than any of them. With regard to truly
improvisational jazz singing, Billie with her ' breathy', 'whisper-like'
inflections and 'key' changes. within specific lyrical lines, and Amy
with her 'slurring' of words was also something that did add a unique
effect to jazz , but I believe Amy was also a big fan of Billie Holiday and adopted parts of her style as well. Young Angelina Jordan has come to
be called the current 'Queen Of Jazz' and incorporates both Billie and Amy's inflections & nuances in much of her heartfelt ballad singing, having
said that she wouldn't be the singer she is, if not for Billie Holiday. I also
noticed that when Amy won her Grammy for her album 'Back To Black'.
right there in the audience, cheering like a schoolgirl, was none other than
The Great Adele', who while not being a jazz singer, was starstruck by Amy,
much in the way Angelina was with Billie Holiday.

Yes it's a "recording", but its a live recording and even the reverb is natural. No editing (fixing) wasreally was possible at this time in music production in this setting. This CZcams video and audio is more processed by comparison.

    Happy Christmas 2022!
Nat King Cole is, I think, a legend

However, this is a music video which is prerecorded, isn’t it? So, his mouth, breath etc can always be adjusted
 imho🙏
