I love what you do, man. I've started using Spitfire stuff to try it out. I started with the LABS stuff and my God it's brilliant!!!!!! That you give this away is crazy. I got my first paid gig using your LABS stuff. I got paid and then upgraded to all the Originals series. Then , I'm getting paid for another track I used those on and the progression continues. Rewatching this video after a couple of years, regarding your data storage: I just switched to 10GB ET routers (Trendnet TEG-S750 as they have no fans, huge heatsinks and a acceptable power consumption of about 11.9W/h), an "OWC Thunderbolt 3 10G Ethernet Adapter" for my Macbook and a 2023 Mac Mini with the built-in 10GB ET upgrade as a server (the smallest Mac mini off the shelf, minimum RAM and disk), with several SSD connected. So the network provided 10 Gbit/s, which goes into my Macs with the same specs, then into 6 Gbit/s drives on the server end (SanDisk Extreme 2nd Gen, some older ones have problems with Ventura that require a firmware fix). Apart from doing all my editing from the network drives at a speed as if they were directly connected, copying 200GB now takes 7-12 minutes instead of 2-3 hours. So you MIGHT WANT to look into 10G Ethernet 😉

Hey Christian! Pertaining to the Black Magic boxes - Why not run camera framerate at 24 or 25? It will be smaller file sizes and enable you to lower shutter speed to 50. It will give you a little more light to the camera sensor without having to boost ISO. For the importing, the best cheap way to do it is buy a chromebook for like 200usd and use it as the import engine. Dump everything onto a ssd so you don't kill your main computer's real time processing power. I use h264 or prores 422 for codec. If anything doesn't match those codecs, then I use a program called EditReady to conform everything.

Linus Tech Tips where moaning about their Red cameras and Corridor Digital tore a strip off them saying 'Why are you recording at top quality? You only need that if you are doing Grade A effects shots for movies!' So basically stop recording in ProRes or drop the quality. 100Mbit/sec is still fine.
I worked on a low budget feature where the director insisted on the max quality his Atomos could capture and it was making 300Mb/sec as 14bit png files. He spent over a month just rendering proxies in ProRes and then ended up converting them to mp4 to edit with!
So in short, yes, record music in wav or aiff but video, especially for CZcams, only has to be above what CZcams puts out so 50mbit/sec is absolutely fine.
"Can you make music in a shed?" Dude, I was making music on the Nav desk in a KC-135 at 35K ft over Afghanistan. You can make music wherever the hell you are. That's the beauty of music. Okay, now that I answered that question, I guess I should watch the video! Cheers!

Even though I’ve got much less of a set up I really like hardware sequencers/dawless approach so you’ve given me few ideas, thanks! I don’t know a huge amount about video but I personally agree with those that say 4K isn’t really worth it ( good, well lit, 1080p I think is indistinguishable from 4K on anything less than 65inch display & consider most people watch this on portable devices). (Btw , I think you accidentally said H264 instead of H265 codec at one point).

Also regarding the low light 1080p halftones vs 4K: I still use 1080p as my 2015 Macbook can't handle 4K, but I changed my rendering settings to 15 kbit/s for 1080p 60fps H264 .mp4 videos and now low light halftones look just like the original, uncompressed video ... until I upload them and CZcams throws a bucket of manure at it.
Hi Christian. You can get more presets and sounds out of the Dimension D by pressing more than one of the preset buttons at a time. It’s the same with the old Boss Dimension C pedal and the marvellous Boss Waza DC2W pedal too, which also has a very good SDD-320 mode as well. It’s also the case on the old Juno 6/60 where you can press both the Chorus buttons at the same time.

Great stuff Christian. I just finished a new rewire/repurpose in my own studio that's eerily similar to yours. My question to you, having seen and drooled over Pauls' studio.... I notice your studio (Like mine) Has really low ceilings and not much trapping so assume bass build up especially in corners is a bit of a bugger? That piano is in the corner i believe so I'm curious how you are treating those acoustical issues?
Very nice! You loved that (so did I). I don’t know much about cameras or your rig but I do know that SD cards, even the fastest ones are pretty slow so you might want to look at that for the potential bottle neck.

The Studio D Chorus: Doesn't it also have the all button setting? It's in the synths (and the UAD modulation of the same).
Christian, can you share more info about your keyboard stand? How easily do those shelves slide up and down, and how do you do that? I’d like to try and build my own.
Whole set up looks the business. Studio always looking great. Cam set up and look I can't complain, looks neat. Onwards and upwards to 6k scale down to 4k in the future. Or 6k output, when CZcams gets it's shit together. That would be even more LIT on mobile devices. A friend at Digital Heart in Leicester is working with 6k.
Great vid as usual. I can't help but imagine there is an enormous power lever that requires two hands to operate just inside your shed door causing Edinburgh to dim slightly when operated. Question: when do you sleep?

H.265 is kinda the new standard for 4K as far as I know. Linus Tech Tips is one of the leading computer channels on CZcams and has helped lots of other channels with their data management. Could be a cool collaboration

Awesome video as always i can't fathom how you make the time to do all this. Very impressive.
Is there maybe a way to connect the Ultrastudios to a Black Magic SG10 (has thunderbolt/usb-c for direct editing up to 8k if i read that correctly). Not sure that creates a better workflow or worse + it requires more investments. Personally i have been going on an "alternative to Adobe" quest this year. I know there is a lot of money/time wasted in learning new software, but i don't want to be dependent on an expensive subscription to work. I have migrated to Davinci Resolve (free/paid) for video editing, Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer for photo editing, pixel and vector art, lastly Affinity Publisher for layout/posters/covers/printed media etc. At work we are slowly phasing out Adobe, which saves the workplace a decent chuck of money each year. If you have all 3 Affinity products and launch Affinity Publisher, you can instantly swap between all 3 product tools, which basically makes it a Photoshop + Illustrator + InDesign replacement in 1 program. Cheap and a superb alternative + their iPad versions are the full versions of the programs, so same features and same file format as their Windows/Mac counterparts.
I used to have a dozen midi keyboards - MS20 was my first (non midi) but I also had some you don't have - the fabulous Synthex and one of the first OSCars ever - serial 0051 - an early mirage - DX7 (of course) Emax - wonder where they are now.
I had to sell them all when I went digital to finance the new set up - and take a lot less space. Wish I could have kept them now.

What are the micro slide and rotary controller you are using Christian? I’ve been looking for something so portable and compact simply because I travel a lot with my MacBook so can take them with me....
Those camera plug in replacement battery thingies (DC-Couplers if I remember right!) are an absolute godsend for static studio filming. Keep filming for ages and then as soon as you leave you just pick up a battery and awaaaaay you go!
Question about synths: Are any of your synths on the library shelves plugged in via midi to control/sequence externally or are they just plug and play from the shelves?
All of his synths on the wall are analogue and have not been modified with midi. They go into a focusright preamp to boost the signal then into the daw.
He explains in another vlog that he doesn't believe in modifying old synths because it doesn't help to preserve the history of the instrument.

Might I make a suggestion? I've been working more in the live production world for the past few years. With the type of content you are making I think an over-the-ear style mic would be great. Something like a DPA4088 or Countryman H6 (or H7 for cardioid).
Personally, I think the DPA sounds better out-of-the-box and has better feedback rejection, however... Since you don't have to worry about feedback, any of them would be a great option for you! Especially if you'd like to free up the space taken up by the current RE20 you're using.

I'm certainly not speaking for the majority but in my case, 1080 is about all I can view. I live in a rural area of the US where internet speed is limited. We can stream 1080p but we can't stream anything higher because the download rate is just too high. With that said, I feel like 1080 does the job for your channel. The audio is one of the most important thing for you to care about which you're nailing. So.... Haha. I will be building my studio in a "shed" in a year or two. Thanks for sharing this!
Great setup. One thing that strikes me, though, is that your mic, stand and shock mount are so ponderous. Have you ever investigated getting a Yellowtec Mikarm? They’re pretty amazing for moving around and placing a microphone. Designed for radio announcers. Very streamlined, and the springs are internal, with friction mounts where the joints meet. I play a lot of real instruments in front of my computer, and the Yellowtec Mikarm lets me easily position the mic with one hand. Also, have you ever experimented with your voice through a Shure SM-7? The have a built-in pop filter and shock mount. A LOT less hardware in the scene.

Hi Christian! Been a long time fan of your films since 9k or 10k subs. Love the cinematic style all your films have as of late. Your work has inspired me to pursue Bachelor's program in Composition, specifically because it has a few units in scoring for film and media. I'm sure there are gripes with courses on the university level but I'm still a young, composing novice and coming from a jazz guitar background instead of piano background. In all honesty, all I can see around your studio is the egregious price tag on all of your gear and I can't help but feel stifled and confused. How much of your equipment (Racks, Microphones, Synths etc.) are actually necessary? As a guitarist we're the worst breed of wanting a lot of gear, but how pertinent is it to have separate mic preamps for individualized instruments? I've seen your videos on gear to get started, already got that covered (and then some). But if I do become a composer's assistant with the intent of going my own way, how much is actually necessary at the pro level? Cheers from the USA!
I'm not Christian, but my advise is don't focus on what you don't have, create with what you do have. More and more of this stuff are going into the box (computer). Once the digital companies focus more on not emulate analog devices and focus on what can be achieved digitally, colors that have never been heard before, the digital industry is likely going to take music into a whole different world. What I said will anger a lot of nostalgic people, who are ironically recording orchestra using digital samples, but that's the reality.
Christian, take a look at the AKAI MidiMix midi controller. It has nine fader and lots of rotary knobs, and portable!
I'm now making some tests to create tutorials and found that the easiest way is to record on OBS with external cards in 4K directly in H.264 with a high constant bitrate (my AMD card, a Vega 64 has an encoder). So far, I'm happy with the results. If you follow some hardcore gamers and streamers a lot of them use a two computers setup. One computer to play video games and another computer to record and stream (usually with OBS). This is very versatile because, that recording computer can always be expanded and you can update to new HDMI capture cards, etc. All has its pros and cons, this setup works well when you record only one camera at a time or a multi-camera scene at any given time, you can't record two cameras separately AFAIK (maybe opening multiple OBS instances? I have to try that). Anyway, here's no perfect setup, I think you are aiming for really high value production that will always come with space issues, I record on 4K to crop and publish in 1080p.

Hey Cristian, regarding the question at 12:04, I have a 10Gbps fiber network at studio transfer speeds are insane. There are 10Gps fiber switches that are fanless these days and quite cheap. Ebay also has a ton of 10Gbps server cards for like $50.

Hi Christian, Are you using Neve preamps for synths? Are they worth to use on synth? It is hard to find any info about it. Second question. So, Manley EQ or compressors are only worth to use on final master?

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K could be a good choice for you. Pro Res is still the best codec IMHO, but DaVinci Resolve 16 is a beast for editing, CC, and with the addition of Fairlight, mixing as well. All my Waves plugins work in it, as well as Slate and others. I have upscaled ProRes 422 HD to 4K using Resolve and it is very good. Problem is the acquisition on 4K really helps in the low light, so recording lower res and upscaling won't really help. I would load the ISO cameras directly into my editor, edit the material from the SSD's, and then after your project is done copy the SSD's and clear them off. Blackmagic Multidock 10G has 4 SSS slots that show up on the desktop as separate discs, so you can put your 3 sources into slots and have your renders and master on a 4th. Out of the camera, into the editor with no down time.
Why do you prefer Logic as opposed to Cubase? I have used both since 1988, but I was just curious.
Dimension D chorus is actually not the analogue chorus from the Junos and the like - that one is the same as the chorus in Roland's JC-120 amp. The Dimension D chorus gets a run in the RS-505 string machine though!
Fantastic! I just wanted to say, and please forgive me for saying this, but to my untrained ears many of the available sample libraries sound similar so choosing who to invest in was difficult. Spitfire's commitment to quality content to help get the most out of products was the tie breaker for me. Not embarrased to say I am a true fanboi!
Did you ever solve the video question? My thought was to edit from the SD cards directly (usb-c straight out of the HyperDecks,) and to save a binder of SD cards, rather than transferring to drives. Blackmagic mentions this latter option on the HyperDeck page, and it mirrors how we used to record to two hour, $90 tapes, back in the day, that would never be reused. Fast enough cards to edit from would be a little dear, but made up for by zero transfer time. But really, the true purpose of the Blackmagic MultiDock is to edit media captured with their HyperDeck Studio.
@Christian Henson Music. You might consider replacing the RE-20 with a great shotgun, like I use in the field for recording. My standby in the Sennheiser MKE 600 en-us.sennheiser.com/camera-mic-dslr-shotgun-video-mke-600 Which I also use in studio for Voice Over recording and ADR. A small boom stand (very light weight) and your set. This mic is very directional w/low cut filter, phantom powered.
You talk sometimes about your album. Where can I listen to it? I really enjoy your videos and LABS and Spitfire Audio and Pianobook, I would definitly listen to it. What is your approach to music, not jobs for trailers and movies, but your own music? What are you doing with all this gear?

Buy the Lexar 128GB 300MB/s Cards (the 256GB ones seem to be rare as hen's teeth) and use the included reader if you are going into a MacBook or an older iMac. The iMac Pro SD (SDXC) card slot should be fine however. These faster cards have an extra data lane that the older cards don't use and it essentially doubles the ingest speed, but your reader needs those lanes as well. I use a similar set-up and the workflow was somewhat transformed. You are shit out of luck with other CODECs at 4K unless you want to invest further in the latest Blackmagic boxes (yours are Hyperdeck Studio Minis, not Ultra Studio Minis) that allow H265 encoding @4K, which is very good. My preference remains ProRes though - the image cadence of an intra frame based encoder can't be beat and the video quality you are getting from your studio set-up is excellent.
CORRECTION: Peter Nichols' post below is the preferred method. You can now record to SSD's via the USB-C port at the back of the Hyperdeck Studio Minis. This wan't possible on the oder units.
