How to Map a Wacom Tablet to a Single Monitor on Linux

  • In this video, I show you how to map the surface of a graphics tablet to a single monitor or display on Linux.
    By default, absolute positioned devices such as graphics tablets (including my Wacom tablet) are mapped from the input area of the tablet to the full resolution of the X11 display. On modern systems, all of your physical monitors are part of the same X11 output, so the area of the tablet is split over all screens.
    See my page on this subject for the exact commands!
    wiki.tonytasci...
    To use a graphics tablet as we normally would, we need to limit the tablets input area to a single monitor. This can be done easily in 2 ways as shows in the video, either using xinput or xsetwacom if you have the Wacom utilities installed. They both do the same thing.
    The commands used in the video are on my website at wiki.tonytasci... under the Linux Scripts section.

    IIRC gnome has this in their wacom settings, but recently I switched over to KDE thinking it would be more stable (which it is not), which seems to have far worse support for wacom... I didn't find option for this anywhere so I assumed it can't be done. But the video helped! Omw makeing it a shortcut because I assume reboot will reset the setting. Thanks!

    Hi Tony, first of all, great video, thank you!. I have one question, my problem is that i just want to use half of my screen, i usually (on windows) split it in half and use half of screen to take notes and the other to look at the videos or classes, the thing is that i cant find a way to do this on linux and its to anoying because it leaves me with just half tablet to use. You know if it's possible to do what i want?

  • @robinreso6240

  • @dimifisher7942
    @dimifisher7942 Před 2 lety

    i did it , thank you, i guess it would be too much to ask if its possible to switch between monitors?

    • @TonyTascioglu
      @TonyTascioglu  Před 2 lety +1

      Generally, to switch, I just map it to the other monitor. I just set 2 of the macro buttons to switch to either of my monitors, since those just show up as normal key inputs that can be binded.

  • @chriscoughs5774
    @chriscoughs5774 Před 2 lety

    On my tablet, all it does is stop it from going to the other monitor. My pen only works for half of the tablet.
    Edit: I have a Wacom Intuos Bluetooth tablet if that matters at all.

  • @melalastro
    @melalastro Před 3 lety

    one more thing, how to set up the keys of the pencil?

    • @TonyTascioglu
      @TonyTascioglu  Před 3 lety

      Sorry for the late reply, I have set up the keys.
      If you're using KDE, they have a nice GUI that's easy to configure as an extra package.
      I just used xsetwacom following the Arch guide here: wiki.archlinux.org/title/wacom_tablet#Remapping_buttons
      I believe you mentioned that you don't have xsetwacom in your distro. I haven't tried mapping keys with xinput though, since xsetwacom has worked for me.
      The package on most distros is something like "xf86-input-wacom", not "xsetwacom". Have you tried searching for a general xf86-input-wacom package?

  • @RickB3n
    @RickB3n Před 10 měsíci

    Great, is there a metodh to map the full wacom tablet to right half display ? I have the video of the lesson on the left. On the right I would like to write, therefore using half the screen but without giving up half the tablet.

    • @RickB3n
      @RickB3n Před 10 měsíci

      edit: I tried this command and I can use the right side of the screen to write but the cursor goes backwards, how could I solve it? xsetwacom --set "Wacom One by Wacom S Pen stylus" area 30400 0 0 9500

    • @RickB3n
      @RickB3n Před 10 měsíci

      edit edit: this works fine for writing on the left side of the screen, but it's exactly the opposite of what I wanted. xsetwacom --set "Wacom One by Wacom S Pen stylus" area 0 0 34000 9500

    I managed to get it to work normally, but now when I turn on the system it simply goes back to the previous configuration. Do you have any suggestions to avoid this thing of always resetting the command after restarting? By the way, thanks for the help.

    • @TonyTascioglu
      @TonyTascioglu  Před 10 měsíci

      If you want it on every plug, a udev rule would probably work, or if you already have an X11 config file, it could be added there. Otherwise, it can just be a startup script - many ways.
      If you migrate from i3 to sway, I believe it will remember the mapping if you unplug and plug the tablet back in

    I got a new Huion and three screens, so to prevent the cursor from moving around freely I tried mapping it to the center screen with this very method, but now it's not moving at all 😭 Please, help

    • @TonyTascioglu
      @TonyTascioglu  Před rokem

      Are you running Wayland by any chance? In that case, the X commands would be running within xwayland.
      For Huion, mapping the tablet with OpenTabletDriver directly might also be simpler (especially with the GUI), so that could be worth a try.

  • @dimifisher7942
    @dimifisher7942 Před rokem

    After a long time that this worked fine, now when i type this to terminal i get this >>> X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
    Major opcode of failed request: 131 (XInputExtension)
    Minor opcode of failed request: 57 ()
    Serial number of failed request: 29
    Current serial number in output stream: 30

    • @TonyTascioglu
      @TonyTascioglu  Před rokem

      You didn't switch to Wayland or something with an update, right? Your input/output names may have changed as well . I also had a fun issue where it wouldn't work on a PCIe USB3.0 card...

    • @TonyTascioglu
      @TonyTascioglu  Před 2 lety +1

      You can always put it in your startup scripts like .xinitrc to have it run on startup. You could also probably use udev to make it trigger every time the tablet is connected.
