  • The logo history of Sony Pictures Television essentially began in 1952 when Columbia Pictures Corporation invested in television, taking the Screen Gems name with them. The first logo for Screen Gems was used on programs, which are billed as being either "A Screen Gems Inc. Production" or "A Screen Gems Inc. Presentation", depending on whether or not Screen Gems had produced the TV show itself. In 1954, the word "Film" was added to SG's logo, and programs using that logo were billed as being, again, "A Screen Gems Inc. Film Production" or "A Screen Gems Inc. Film Presentation". In August 1955, Screen Gems introduced another new logo, rendering the Columbia Pictures "Torch Lady" in all her glory. The byline, "Television Subsidiary: Columbia Pictures Corporation" was added to acknowledge Screen Gems' parent company. In 1958, Screen Gems celebrated the tenth anniversary of its incorporation in New York, and programs using a logo to celebrate were billed as being "A Screen Gems Film Program". This was reverted in 1959. In 1960, yet another new logo was introduced for Screen Gems, simply placing the company name around the Torch Lady's legs with no extra qualifying information. This information was usually used as a voiceover. In 1963, Screen Gems introduced yet another new logo, which featured a weird animation with dancing lines and flashing circles. A voiceover continued to differentiate between "Production" and "Presentation". In 1965, Screen Gems changed its logo yet again, to finally reveal the stylized "S". This design is in use by the new Screen Gems today, but the one Screen Gems used back in that time was known as the "S from Hell". In 1970, the logo was shortened, removing the 3 staccato notes. In 1973, the animated logos for Columbia Pictures divisions, including Screen Gems, took on the byline "A Division of Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc.", in line with that name used on copyright notices. In Late 1974, Screen Gems was rebranded as Columbia Pictures Television, which used a logo loosely based on the S. The logo featured the "Lindbergh Pretzel". In June 1976, a short television version of the "Sunburst" debuted. In June 1982, Columbia Pictures Industries was bought by The Coca-Cola Company for cash and stock worth $1.025B via new subsidiary, Coca-Cola Pictures, Inc. Following that, the "Torch Lady" logo as introduced by Columbia Pictures a year prior got a television version, supporting a byline that reads "A Unit of The Coca-Cola Company", announcing the company's new ownership. In early 1986, Tri-Star Pictures, Inc. set up its own television production division, Tri-Star Television, which introduced its own logo. That logo would disappear between February 23 and March 1988. Just before this, on January 4, 1988, Columbia Pictures Television introduced a new logo following the establishment of Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc., supporting a new byline that read "A Unit of Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc.", yet again, announcing the company's new ownership. In January 1989, Columbia Pictures Television re-animated a logo, using footage from the 1981 Columbia Pictures logo. Columbia Pictures Television Distribution, a distribution division of CPT, used that as their logo, but with the words "In Association With" or "Distributed by", depending on whether or not CPT had distributed or produced the show itself. On August 7, 1991, Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. was reincorporated as Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc., and in keeping with this, its television operations were re-organized under a group called Sony Television Entertainment. Its name was never used on-screen. As usual, the Sony Pictures Entertainment byline wasn't added to the Columbia or TriStar logos until September 1992, when new logos were introduced for both companies. I would try to talk about the other events that went on back then, but in 1994, Sony established Columbia TriStar Television, a division of CPT. CTT introduced its own logo in September 1994, and introduced another on July 12, 1996, when Columbia TriStar Television Distribution used its own logo after being established two years prior on February 21, 1994. In 1999, CTT introduced yet another new logo, and CTTD was rebranded as Columbia TriStar Domestic Television, which was rebranded as Sony Pictures Television. On September 1, 2013, TriStar Productions, Inc. was officially established, and a third incarnation of TriStar Television was established and introduced its own logo 2 years later after two previous ones were shut down as production companies. There was another production company under SPT called Sony Pictures Television Studios.
