  • Sorry, we can't help you track down that upcoming RSD title you're after. In this episode of Talking About Records we set the "record" straight in regards to why we are not a participating RSD store.
✶ Talking About Records is presented by NTX Vinyl, a local, independent, chain of community based record stores in the DFW area.

I think you do what you do - and you do it well. And probably save you a ton of money not having to have staff on site everyday. Higher rent. Etc etc.
Keep up the good work. Love your shops in person and online.

RSD is a ton of work for 1 day, heck even for just a quick surge of buyers on store owners. Stocking, figuring out price, how much to get, will it sell? Getting extra staff for the day. I can see why some don’t wanna do it anymore.

G.I. brother, however you choose to do things is entirely up to you, and frankly, you've made it work, and quite successfully at that, so you must be doing something right. Hell, I wouldn't be at all surprised if more businesses start to incorporate the same formula. The way I see it, you've cracked the work/home life code!

My record store in an antique mall works out fine for me. I simply don't have the time to spend 40+ hours a week behind a counter servicing customers. Much like your stores, all my sales are handled at the antique mall's front counter. My only responsibilities are restocking the shelves every week and straightening the place up if needed. In conclusion, the store makes a decent profit and I have plenty of free time to engage in other activities. By the way, my store doesn't qualify for RSD either. My customers are okay with this, and so am I.

oh wow I was not aware of your shop setup. Interesting. That begs another question, though. How do you manage your stock then?
I mean with multiple outlets, how do you decide to send this record there and not here (assuming you don't have enough copy for all, so mostly on the used market as the new records you'll be able to feed all outlets)
That and the online aspect of it especially if you "share" the stock for the online front. That means if one record get sold online you need to retrieve it from the outlet ASAP before it gets sold there, no?
Or the online store front has its own stock managed from the warehouse?
Easier to manage but maybe that old record that has been on the shelf of that outlet for years could have been sold online quickly?
It's quite tricky to balance indeed. If you would care to go into details of these operations that would be enlightening (though I understand if you'd rather not)
    Cheers.

Well yeah people just might be confused because go to your website and RSD 2024 releases is a prominent section. Also I had no idea you were sort of like the old Renaissance defunct record shop in Killeen...now selling out of "antique stores". Been familiar with your channel for several years and never knew you didn't have a formal stand alone store.

Thank you for flagging that page. It has now been removed.
I’ve talked about my shops/set up a lot. Even done videos about how I’ve expanded and improved them over the years.
I have zero interest in ever being stuck behind a desk for 50 hours a week. Not my thing.

I appreciate the social aspect of Record Store Day. But for me, personally, getting up early and standing in line for a chance to fight the herd for the opportunity to buy overpriced novelty records (color vinyl?) that I'm not sure I even want is not my idea of a good time. I don't want to be told when and where I should shop for a luxury like LPs. Records are a pleasure, a hobby, not a job that dictates where you have to be according to the clock or the calendar. I'll buy what I want when I want it... at the time and under the circumstances of my choosing, as they say in international diplomacy. And if they sell out, well, that's fine, too. There are plenty more records in the marketplace. But you know most RSD discs are going to be repressed or remaindered and become available under more convenient conditions before too long...

Big Love Vinyl has a similar model in Oak Island, NC. NTX doesn't have to pay rent for a standalone shop. That's huge.
How do you handle sales tax for online sales if you have your own site? Mike from Ingroove says it's almost cost prohibitive to pay quarterly sales tax to every jurisdiction someone bought from. I know Discogs, Ebay, or Paypal would handle that if you operated on there. But how does this work or don't you know about this? It would be hard for the state of Nevada to come get you for sales tax if you operated out of Texas. I think the Feds may have a say if you avoided the issue.

    • @NTXVinyl
      @NTXVinyl  Před 5 měsíci

I employee a book keeper and CPA to handle all of my sales taxes, etc. no issues there
And I pay rent as well. Not as much (by choice) but still pay for my square footage, and have employees, and it’s my full time job.
And yes I know Big Love - I consulted with him plenty I he was getting set up
