He could work with the best musicians, orchestrators, and arrangers, Gordon Jenkins leading the orchestra here. "It Was A Very Good Year" is an excellent tune and lyric--perfectly suited to Sinatra's ballad style. Many years ago, a local radio DJ where I lived recounted that he was in the studio control room when this was recorded. At the end of the tune, everyone in the control room immediately knew that Sinatra had "nailed it" and that it would be a big hit--and it was, and still is.
Sinatra was an absolute perfectionist in the recording studio. He demanded perfect tone and phrasing from himself and the same from his arrangers, musicians, engineers. Graham Nash of Crosby Stills & Nash gave an interview where he said he got into rock music to push aside the music of Sinatra. But years later he watched a documentary of Frank in the recording studio and was in absolute awe of Sinatra's genius and perfectionism.
True story: My mom passed, and I was driving her car, picking up lunch for my wife and me as we began cleaning out her house. I put on the radio for distraction, just to stop thinking. Well, rather than the radio, the CD player came on. It started playing Sinatra's "My Way", which those who know, is an end-of-life reflective song which he recorded toward the end of his career. The song didn't start at the beginning, and I beat myself up to this day because I don't recall which verse he was singing when it started playing. But I know my mom was telling me don't feel bad for her, she lived her life, enjoyed her life, and I needed to do the same. The last advice she gave me - from the other side.

I've been listening to roughly 30 Sinatra recording sessions in which it became very evident to me that he out much work into each recording. He did repeated takes until he got the song where he wanted it. He also brought humor to the sessions and the musicians clearly liked him and respected what he was trying to do. So, when we listen to a Sinatra album cut, we might not often realize just how much work went into the song. He often made suggestions to the arrangers at these sessions, especially about tempo, resulting in multiple takes. He was dedicated to producing quality music and September of my Years was simply brilliant. The Gordon Jenkins arrangements were perfect.

I came along a bit late to remember meeting some of them, but there were stories. I remember near the end of his life people would make fun of him when he would forget lyrics but, the guy is a legend and I respect him. Sinatra did record the same songs at different stages of his life this being one of them. There is another song called "All or Nothing at All" which he sings in a very morose, sad way. Sinatra had the reputation of being a womanizer and was involved with Ava Gardner who supposedly taught him a lesson by walking out on him which got him to record another version of All or Nothing at All. There is a story told by a comedian - I don’t remember who - who was at a performance when Frank forgot the lyrics of a song. As Frank faltered, someone in the audience stood up and yelled, “We love you, Frank!” It was enough for Frank to gather himself, and the story goes that he finished the song and the concert flawlessly.
Just really segments of his life. When he was 17 thinking about having fun with the ladies...at 21 actually having fun with the ladies. At 35 he is in the middle of his life, and now he 's probably 65 looking back at his life.. And those years...were very good years. And now, he is in the autumn of his life ,,,getting towards the end of his life. My all time favorite song by Frank Sinatra,,,,believe it or not....my father could sing..and sang just like him,,kid you not ,,back in the 60's he sang at my uncle and aunts wedding.

Everyone is different but I'm a little surprised that you said that you're not a huge Sinatra fan yet a jazz connoisseur. Although strictly speaking Sinatra wasn't a jazz singer, his ability to swing prodigiously, superb phrasing and his command and artistry in other essential aspects that make jazz great generally mean many jazz fans and in particularly musicians are great admirers of Sinatra. Miles Davis famously said "if you want to learn how to phrase a melody, listen to Sinatra". Lester Young was another big fan of Sinatra. I'm a saxophonist that has worked in various musical forms throughout my career , Jazz being the one that, although not the most financially rewarding, the idiom that I by far find the most personal and gives me the most fulfilling experience. Anyway just a few thoughts and again music is a totally subjective art form and we all respond individually to various forms and performances.

This has always been one of my favorite Sinatra songs. Recording technology had developed to the point that artists could over-dub and "correct" things in records without having to go back and re-record a whole song. Also, instrumental tracks could be recorded and then voices over-dubbed. That's not the way Sinatra did it. He always recorded in the studio as though it were live, with the orchestra present. No overdubbing. If there was a problem in the performance, the whole song was done again from the beginning. That didn't happen often, as I understand. Sinatra, himself, was a professional and a perfectionist. And he only hired the best musicians.

Frank was the man. I had the pleasure of seeing him live in the mid-late 1980's in Reno. This was a real surprise, India, you checking out 'Ol Blue Eyes. I recommend, Fly Me to the Moon, The Best is Yet to Come, My Way, Come Fly with Me, One for My Baby, , and of course - New York, New York...the list goes on and on. He's a legend. My mother and father where 34 and 32 year respective older than me. When I was kid (mid 60 to late 70) the AM radio station would play Sinatra, Perry Como, Dean Martin and Doris Day to name a few. They I was in to the soft rock music of The Carpenters and alike. Even now I listen to mainly the older style of hard rock and heavy metal (60s to the late 80s with the exception of one be this century from a band called *The Warning* ), whenever I see any of these old 40s and 50s gems I will stop and listen.
Frank could sing a song & there's no doubt about it. Classic! People can take lessons from him, for sure, on how to present & sing a song. He could definitely sell it.

This has always been one of my favorite Sinatra songs. Recording technology had developed to the point that artists could over-dub and "correct" things in records without having to go back and re-record a whole song. Also, instrumental tracks could be recorded and then voices over-dubbed. That's not the way Sinatra did it. He always recorded in the studio as though it were live, with the orchestra present. No overdubbing. If there was a problem in the performance, the whole song was done again from the beginning. That didn't happen often, as I understand. Sinatra, himself, was a professional and a perfectionist. And he only hired the best musicians.
I love Frank Sinatra! There are so many great songs he has done that you haven’t heard. Definitely take the time to listen to him.

my way and new york new york get all the juice from late in his career, but i've always thought this was his best song he ever recorded. the sense of longing, nostalgia, the picture he paints and the recognition that he is mortal are powerful.....and the older you get--i'm 71--the more meaning it has.

Frank was the man. I had the pleasure of seeing him live in the mid-late 1980's in Reno. This was a real surprise, India, you checking out 'Ol Blue Eyes. I recommend, Fly Me to the Moon, The Best is Yet to Come, My Way, Come Fly with Me, One for My Baby, , and of course - New York, New York...the list goes on and on. He's a legend. Check out his live performances, including anything from "Sinatra at the Sands (with Count Basie)", and for something really different, check out his "Duets" albums, including, The Lady Is A Tramp w/ Luther Vandross, or "What Now My Love" w/ Arethe Franklin.

My mother and father where 34 and 32 year respective older than me. When I was kid (mid 60 to late 70) the AM radio station would play Sinatra, Perry Como, Dean Martin and Doris Day to name a few. They I was in to the soft rock music of The Carpenters and alike. Even now I listen to mainly the older style of hard rock and heavy metal (60s to the late 80s with the exception of one be this century from a band called *The Warning* ), whenever I see any of these old 40s and 50s gems I will stop and listen.
Frank could sing a song & there's no doubt about it. Classic! People can take lessons from him, for sure, on how to present & sing a song. He could definitely sell it.
