I got to see Dr. John in Kansas City before he passed away, he had to use 2 canes to walk and he tore the place up , he also played the guitar, he stood up and some stage hands carried the guitar out and strapped it on him,he was a hell of a guitar player , I was very fortunate to have seen him, a great talent
@@rogm8577 He started on the guitar but during a performance a fight broke out and someone started shooting, he was shoot in the hand and lost some pieces of his fingers, he still played but switched to the piano, you should Google him and read about his life, he was one bad man and a great musician
I saw him perform this song with Ringo Starr, Nils Lofgren, Billy Preston and Clarence Clemens live with the All Star Band around 1990 at the Aladdin Theatre in Vegas. I am lucky to have seen so many legends in my lifetime. RIP Dr.John.
Awesome band. That's Hiram Bullock on guitar, Marcus Miller on bass, Omar Hakim on drums, David Sanborn on sax and Jeff Healey on guitar. This band was killer.
The Dr. has left the building and across this mortal plain . I cried tonight from sadness, as he boarded that heavenly train. He walked on Gilded Splinters with a Zulu staff of light and as he lifted into to the sky he whispered Such a Night...
Docs demise is a tremendous loss. Root to stem, he was an encyclopedia of New Orleans piano styles and virtually an encyclopedia of the American pop music scene. He piano playing was extraordinary - even though he had big time chops, his musicality is only highlighted by how controlled and tasteful his playing was with this incredible rhythm section. RIP to the Night Tripper. The legend will only grow.
Jeff Healy (may he rest in peace) at 5:42 - one of my favorite musicians. Hiram Bullock (guitar) also died from cancer at age 52. Saw Dr. John at Tipitinas last December - great show, great band!
@wackyruss 11 months ago The famous chorus is mostly in Louisiana Creole French except “Chokma Finha” which is Choctaw (Native American) for “Very Good”. Iko Iko is Louisiana Creole French for “Listen, Listen!” (French: Écoute Écoute!). An Dey is Louisiana Creole French for “in the back” The French word is Derrière and shortened to “dey yay” in Louisiana Creole French. The “yay” got dropped and we were left with “an dey”. An Dan Dey means “in the back” from French. The last word is the French word for year - Année. So…. Iko Iko An Dey Chokma Finha An Dan Dey Chokma Fin Année means Listen! Listen at the back! It’s very good in the back! It’s a very Good Year! The mixing of Louisiana Creole French with the Native American Choctaw language occurred because this chant came from the “black” Mardi Gras Indian dancers dressed in elaborate costumes that perform dance battles in the streets of New Orleans. Also, the black creoles of African descent oftentimes married Choctaw Indians in Louisiana. This song is a gem with so much history behind the meaning of the words.
I especially liked the little interview with Dr. John at the beginining where he explains the basic meaning of the phrase Iko Iko. This jam is awesome. It is fast and jazzy with some great solo work on sax.
The Good Doctor. One of the last of the true New Orleans piano "Professors." John Cleary is right up there too. ...And Joe Krown is definitely up. and coming.
One of the TRUE giants, certainly one of the KINGS of New Orleans, and in my opinion, one of the true Icons, especially if you play keys,GOD rest your soul brother, you have found your "Little piece of shade"......One of my All time favorites...and I have many...ETTA & the DR,ON B.B.KINGS, B.B King & friends,(1989) ''I ''d rather go blind'..only two giants could bring it like that!! Amazed and amazing to find this video, posted from Japan (?). From the Big Easy soundtrack to hear in 2022. Dr John isn't dead, here's just left the building, to play another gig. Rave on, Dr John.
Dr. John (vocal and piano), David Sanborn (sax), Omar Hakim (drums), Marcus Miller (bass), Philippe Saisse (keys), Hiram Bullock and Jeff Healey (guitar).
Great stuff. The guitarist kicks it off with the riff from David Bowie's Modern Love. And keeping it real is the grooviest of groove drummers Omar Hakim.
I have to add a word in favor of David Sanborn who was in the horn section for some of the Butterfield Band best albums. This cat has trod some miles in the musical world. He also played in the tradition of King Curtis. so there's that

I had no idea he played guitar. People who know more than me say he is phenominal on keyboard.

Dr. John captured the soul of New Orleans in his music. RIP, maestro

Jeff Healey was a great player to say the least.
💯💯💯👍
Thanks for the info.. I didn't even realize Jeff Healey was there until the camera gets him.. then there's no doubt.. he was a killer player!

dr. john -one of the best boogie, funk, blues, jazz, gospel pianists ever, he doesnt need the boundaries of genres, he breaks them with his style...
...this guy is a National Treasure...Cool doesn't begin to describe his performances...he's 72 and still performing...

Saw him about 20 years ago when I was much younger!! HELL OF A SHOW!! Never forgot him! TY for your life, and RIP DR JOHN!!
Dr.Johnはいろいろなミュージシャンとセッションしていますが、どんなメンバーと競演しても変わらぬスタイルを貫いているのが素晴らしい。
Got into the Night Tripper about 50 years ago. Always a special place for his music. One of a kind don't you think?
Really love this rendition of Iko Iko. RIP Dr John
We get to hear music of this caliber on any given night in Nola.
That' s why I'll never leave.
Yeah but then you're constantly getting mugged. Great city but it needs more cops.
I can only speculate, but its hard to imagine talent of this caliber on a routine basis.

The old Mississippi don’t have ‘nuff to wash away all the tears New Orleans cries tonight...
So grateful to have seen him play and live during his time.
American Royalty.
Thanks, R.I.P.
Saw him perform at The Handlebar in Greenville, SC. A great memory of a great artist and a very cool character.
I used to watch this show all the time. I didn't realize the great music I was experiencing at the time. He had lots of great musicians on.
RIP Dr. John you was past cool like real cool

To my late father, who died on the same day. October 31st, 1942 - June 6th, 2019.
I met Jeff Healy when he was on a West Coast tour. We talked back stage, then he went on and blew the roof off.
I miss you so much Dr.John. Please do something special and get resurrected so we can continue to enjoy your joyous music.

I am grateful to have stumbled upon this one. Thank you for letting me listen.

LOVED THIS !
Coming to an appointment with Levon Helm and the All Stars in Heaven! (It'll be a great rock'n'roll night in Spiritual Mansions!)
The white guitarist is Jeff Healy who died a few years back. Check him out in the movie Road House - great player gone too young
Such a treasure. He's going to be missed so much.
Nice sound !
Especially guitar play. That style like Japanese koto.
They were covering it too… the original dates to 1958.
