At 233 feet tall, the Leshan Giant Buddha is the largest pre-modern carved statue in the world. Its hair has 1,021 spiralled curls, it’s head is 48 feet in height, its fingers are 27 feet long and it has a whopping 18ft foot long nose.
Located next to the Lingyun Temple on Lingyun mountain near the city of Leshan in China at the confluence of three rivers - the Minjaing, the Dadu and the Qingyi, the statue was carved straight from the Cretaceous red sandstone, between 713 and 803 AD, during the Tang Dynasty.
It was built to face Mount Emei, with the river flowing at its feet and it truly is an incredible, enigmatic sight to behold. It is the largest and tallest stone Buddha statue in the world and, as stated, it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world.
Its construction was led by a Chinese monk named Hai Tong because he hoped that the giant Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued shipping vessels at this major river confluence.

The difference between the lower structure and the upper is noteworthy. The style and detail of the feet and hands is way more rounded and refined, almost lifelike. The style and detail of the head and face is clearly from another group of carvers.

You'd think especially with what a popular tourist site that it is, that they'd rebuild that wooden covering to protect it, or just build some new covering. Heck when they were doing restoration work would've been a perfect time for it. People always seem to go for the quickest and cheapest route these days.

I went to the leshan Buddhist site on mountain I think just after they finished restoring it, one thing they don't mention is how cool the rest of the mountain is there's underground caves with other giant buddhas and tons of temples and shrines to bodhisattvas and other buddhas. my favorite part was all the pilgrimage caves were monks would stay overnight and meditate, they were essentially just humble holes carved into the wall of the sandstone. Definitely worth seeing I truly eye-opening experience.

Another good video, if you stop by giza any chance you could get some closeup video of the outer casing stone from the top of the pyramid , the weathering may give some kind of new outlook into dating , even better if possible a sample because it hasn't really been touched since it was under water, with the dating given as it is now is looking at the sphinx and pyramids of the weathering as we see it when for how long outer casing stood through time lasted isn't really mentioned, maybe a metals test(possibly there could be gold in it , depending on who or what mined it) from the outer casing stone the top.

The legend says the sitting buddha was carved out to sit on the hand of a much older much bigger lying Buddha (or ancient structure). The rock is also full of prehistorical craved out graves, predated 'Han' Chinese civilization. Many of those graves are lost and damaged by new construction works.
