Pat Metheny Group Live at Theatre Antique de Vienne, France July 3 2002 Lineup: Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby, Antonio Sanchez, Richard Bona, Cuong Vu
I remember hearing this song back when I was a child. It's amazing how Pat Metheny can stir up memories and help me create new ones, especially better ones, and he just has a way of making music! It heals me!
Jobim has always been one of my favorites. This rendition is absolutely brilliant. I've heard this live once, it was a tribute to Jobim when he passed away. What a way to be remembered.
The drummer is amazing here! At times it's like Pat is surfing on a great wave of poly rhythm, with bassist Rodby laying the foundation. Pat finds so many sympathetic musicians, and he soars with them!
@@moonlightsupernova And they soar with him, too! I know from attending some of his concerts, and it would take a lot to wipe the smile off my face! I just love Pat's music and amazing character. I'll never forget how much he inspired me when I attended the "The First Circle" concert in October, 1983. I want to sing that song with him, but alas, I'm not sure if it's possible.
Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as "Best Jazz Guitarist" and awards, including three gold records for Still Life (Talking), Letter from Home, and Secret Story. Source: Pat Metheny Website 8:23
I bought the DVD of this concert some years ago and since day one I have played it hundreds of times, Pat's sound is unique! Definitely my favorite part 8:24, pure dynamics!
I played mine till it's only one long string of plastic at this point it's almost impossible to replace so I downloaded this seems for some reason it doesn't scratch wearout or skip 👍
i agree, i am a young guitarist (18 years old) who loves pat metheny, just saw him at jazz in marciac in france a few weeks ago. it's sadly very rare to come across people my age who love or even know pat metheny. we do exist though and try to spread pat's music :)
Americans translate the song into how insensitive. It’s not. It’s a false cognate. It’s foolish in Portuguese. It’s a song about how foolish a lady was to have fallen in love and that she was basically stupid. It’s too bad I have never seen this correctly used by English . Thanks
The English lyrics to non-English songs are invariably ‘inspired by’ or an interpretation of the original. The words have to scan to the music so a literal translation - as one would do with spoken or written text - is almost impossible. Even when the translation is close, subtle differences can make a difference. Perhaps the most famous example is Jacques Brel’s ‘Ne me quitte pas’ which translates as ‘Don’t leave me’ or ‘Do not leave me’ but the English lyric, in order to scan with the music, is ‘If you go away’, an altogether less desperate plea.
I did not know that you were a Pat Metheny fan! I saw a pic or video of Pat some place where he did NOT have a striped shirt and someone asked is he ok?

if first i had listen at this way of playing HOW INSENSITIVE i would never loved this song as I do. I am in a daze!!!! this is not bossanova, this is other. and i am free to say i don't even like it!
My imagination or are the drums a buzz kill on this one? Seems like everyone is struggling against him pushing forward too hard while they're trying to relax into the tune. In this case Sanchez does seem "insensitive"..
Pat’s soloing is from another galaxy.
"A Jobinian galaxy!" 1:01
He always seems to find a melodic solution whilst improvising..sign of an excellent musician playing with equal great musicians by his side.
the bass solo was eargasmic
I dream of playing so freely that I can enjoy my own music as Pat seems to do.... absolute master of the guitar.
Keep dreaming

And still so humble and down to earth...
Master class performance from everyone and still amazing after all these years.
There is no famous musician of any genre who does not admire Pat. The legendary man continues to amaze.
It s more poetry than music
Maybe Kenny g? Idk 😂

One of the greatest jazz guitar solo ever played.
I agree
Truly an instrument of the Divine, Pat Metheny Group is.
Damn, Steve Rodby has a pretty good understanding of harmonics! What a majestic bass solo!
Great musician Path Metheny and his entire group; especially the virtuous Mexican drummer Antonio Sánchez, a source of pride for his country.

like this. So I will let Pat to lift me to the heaven.
After all these decades, Pat music never faded - as well as the bass player, Steve Rodby.
What fantastic musicians they are...just amazing!
If necessary, repeat: Unbelievable! 8:23

Pat never fails to strike bewildered awe into his listeners. One may ask "how is that possible", what a gift.

This is quite beautiful. In retrospect,it is sad that there is not a Lyle solo on this version, however, his comping behind Pat is otherworldly!

Thought the same here...
It all wins food when Lyle Mays gets in. Until then, the whole thing is pointless and uncertain. Immediately feel Metheny react and wake up. ;)
Personally I don’t think any use of penthotonic suits this song. But hell why not. It just kills something from the soul of the song
