We had a St Martin lamp Procession in the local University this year. A few years ago I visited Tour and was able to pray at his shrine. Keep up the good work!

We heard this story at primary school, those were the days!
Here in Denmark we commemorate Martin of Tours on the 11th of november (that's today) by feasting on duck (since geese were too big for out kitchens and aren't traditionally eaten here - but Danes love duck :P) we do however call it "mortenaften" (Morten's evening)
Thats curious, here in Germany there's a tradition to eat a goose (Martinsgans, literally "Martin-goose") for Saint Martin's day!
I'm not Christian, but I was never taught anything else than the very basics of the story, which is him taking the cloak, cutting it in half and giving it to a homeless person, I was never taught the detail of cloaks being thick, or expensive, or the fact that he slept outside that night and that he helped the beggar with the fire. I always assumed he trotted past him on his horse, gave the beggar a thin half of his cloak and continued onward, that's what I assumed from the picture we always saw.

St. Martin of Tours is my patronal saint. The story of the cloak and the miracle thereafter was the reason I chose this holy man as my beloved saint. I am constantly in need of the reminder to be merciful and generous to my neighbor.

I do have a request as a new convert. I would love to know more about Name days. I feel like many people don't really talk about it and it various so much between countries and Churches. Its almost a tradition that should be encouraged to honor our saints.

I'm sure the Armistice that ended World War I did not just randomly occur on a day known for a patron Saint of soldiers - both in the Western and Eastern Churches. In the United States , November 11 is a Federal holiday called Veterans Day where all of our military veterans are honored .
