- The target species was redfin. Despite catching both roach and redfin (perch), I caught more roach than redfin on this fishing adventure.
In this "how to catch roach" video, I run through all of the gear I am using, exactly where I am fishing and you will see how I am fishing.

Hahaha thanks mate. 👍👍

@@Damonfishing and here I thought he was being a bush poet...
Every time you start reciting poetry I flash back a few years to one about a crustacean and incontenence and it cracks me up again!
That one was epic!
Haha thanks Brian. I remember that. It was in the video where I caught a trout cod in my cray net. LOL
Few nice cod candy there mate love the time lapse Robbie that was cool cheers
What a beautiful start to the day and a nice opeing from you :) Nice Roach session and great tips to catch them!
Thanks so much Larry.
Roach have a pretty colour to their fins.Must say i enjoyed the poetry at the beginning. Thanks again for a good video.A shelia from the UK.
Haha thank you so much. 🙏♥️👍
Stick float and maggots dipped in vanilla essence. You can catch them one after the other, good eating if decent size.
Use them live on a paternoster for Murray Cod
Strip baits work great too.
Isn't it illegal to fish love baits in freshwater or is that just here NSW
Hey Robbie! Ive been a sub for about a year and a half now, and I haven't seen any gear reviews. I would love to see you show and review the rods, reels, line and terminal tackle you use in Australia. I think you would get a lot of likes. Thanks from a fan in the good old USA!
Hi mate, thank you so much. I do have a lot of reviews on my channel, but not so much terminal tackle and the like. Thanks for the great suggestion.
Your a poet and ya didn’t know it, lol…..😅 Great video Robbie. That’s a great sunrise! You caught a couple of nice Roach.
Haha thanks Wayne. One of the kids that wrote into my fan mail segment recently said he liked my poetry so I was feeling a bit inspired. LOL 🤣
MOST of the urban streams around Melb contain roach, among other coarse species!
Great start Robbie we need more
Thanks so much mate.
Hi Robbie another great video mate you really put in the hours for great landscape and sun rises and sun sets and fish all with a lite hearted and casual manner 😅👍👍👍
Thanks so much Kevin. I absolutely love sunrise. I need to get out of bed early and experience it more often.
Great fun vid. Nice spot I used to go there for deer hunting.
Hey Robbie Greta video as always. I’m a bit sad right now, happy that you posted but today when we went out fishing, we caught heaps of bream, a eel, a crap and a mangrove jack, I filmed it all, but in the editing process, instead of pressing “import” I accidentally pressed “delete” and bam, there goes 6 hours of content, like 20 fish and a good day, ahh well. Hopefully we can recover them.
Love your videos Robbie, I really do. Tight lines bro 🤙🎣🤙🎣🤙🎣🤙🎣🤙🎣🤙🤙🎣🤙🎣🤙🎣🤙🎣🤙🎣🎣🎣🎣
G'day mate, that really sux. Are you using a PC or laptop to edit? If so, you may be able to download a free file recovery program. I ba head to use them in the past for the very same reason, I have made similar mistakes, numerous times.
I hope you can salvage your footage buddy. If you have formatted the cars you will most likely lose the footage though.
G'day RObbie, another video to wet your fishing taste buds, nice work🐟
Thanks so much mate.
Well there ya go. Just stumbled across you channel and this video in particular, headin to lake eildon next week for a trip hopefully i catch something. That being said, im definitely subscribing. Love ya work mate👌
Thanks mate. Good luck next weekend. 👍👍
Nice. Roach fishing would have been a perfect situation to give those PUNCHMASTER waggler floats a run!
Thanks Frank. Haha absolutely they would have. Although with this flat bank casting distance could have been a problem though.
I can remember my grandfather and I catching plenty of Roach in the Yarra river at the old dairy paddocks opposite the Fairfield paper mills in the very early 1960’s. We fished worms and a stiff dough made from flour, honey and water under floats and always had a lot of fun and threw most of them back to catch next time. Another great video Robbie that has brought back many wonderful childhood memories.
Thank you so much Lorraine. You grandfather in the early 1960s, WOW. Was he a WW1 veteran?
@@robbiefishing , yes and also a WW2 veteran, he developed my love of fishing and the outdoors and taught me me so much, as I previously said it brought back so many wonderful memories of a time and place so different to what the kids of today face.
Thanks for the smiles Robbie night mate
Thanks Catherine. 👍👍
Good one mate 👍👍👍
Thanks Cam. 👍
Like your videos Robbie. Being in Northern California it's interesting to see the different species of fish that you catch down under.
Thanks so much mate. I have been to California and absolutely loved it.
If you ever get back to this side of the Great Pond, it would be grand to take you Mud Marlin fishing!
We're going to Bonnie Doon 🎶
I prefer seeing the Roach go back over the Redfin at least they are not aggressive fish and definitely good food size for a hungry cod 🎣
Most small redfin ar redfin are good food too but i bet they eat plenty of fingerling before they do become food...
You are close to 82k subs Robbie🎉
Awesome, thanks for your support mate.
Man i love lake elidon, but hate the cold weather
Wicked top video love the info.😂
Thanks Brett. 👍👍👍
Looking slimy bro!
Who wouldn't click that thumbnail mate ? and not disappointed. Well done Robbie. Cheers.
Thanks so much VB. What a fantastic sunrise that was. WOW
Never caught or saw black fish. Was the odd goldfish but normally Small. Is interesting to hear about.
good vid
🙂👍
Thanks mate. 👍👍
Such a poet mate 😂
Hahaha I'm a natural. LOL 🤣🤣
Good stuff mate.
Never caught a Roach
Thanks Butch, they're certainly an interesting species of fish.
I think it’s inspirational that you’re up that early to go fishing, I haven’t done that for years, I remember how good it feels but I still don’t think I have the motivation to do it. I think I might have depression though.
Hi mate, depression is a bastard of a thing. I suffer from it myself. I hope you are going OK..🙏🙏
I was out at bundalong last week fishing for cod and every morning around sunrise a bunch of fish would be jumping in schools, but as soon as the sun rose they stopped. Robbie u cracked the code, I think they were ROACH 😂😂. Well done though mate great video as usual 👍
Thanks Jack. I wonder if they were roach? I've never heard of them being caught in this area, but that doesn't mean they're not there.
Awwww home how I miss it 😿 😢
Her name is Berryl, she's a little bit ferryl, Her dad is mad but I'm very glad, love watching his vlogs even though he's a dingleqwot lol 😂😂😂😂
Hahahaha thanks bro. That's so funny. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey Robbie in a recent stream you mentioned the felltimber creek wetlands being stocked. I was wondering if I could get some clarity on where it is is it behind the community centre or somewhere else?
Hi mate, yes that's one of the places. I think Les Stone Park also gets some trout as well. You may need to check the Victorian Fisheries website to see exactly how many fish were stocked and exactly where.
You should try eat one i have once and i won't give it away what they taste like haha. I love catching the Roach fun little fish.
Thanks mate. Haha I would need to catch one a little bit bigger first. LOL 🤣
LOL 😂 I reckon I caught them in the Goulburn River years ago
After the 2011 floods an acquaintance se t a picture of 9lb Redfin and some roach he caught in the Campaspe below Eppalock
WOW That's unreal. If they're in Eildon then catching on in the Goulburn. Makes sense.
Rohan has caught them in Eppalock. We don't get them here, well not that I know of anyway. 🙏🙏
Wow, Robbie, that was very poetic. The next Banjo Patterson . Love your content bloke. Do you know if the Avoca River has roach?
Haha thanks mate. I am not sure about the Avoca sorry. I don't know a lot about the river in general. I need to head over there and fish it.
@robbiefishing Thanks anyway, mate. May have to give it a crack myself.
You're a poet and didn't know it!
That is true, and very kind of you. 👍🤣
I caught close to a meter flatty today and I coockd and ate a pike eel👍🎣😂🇦🇺🤙 great video Robbie
Sounds awesome well done. Thanks mate. 👍👍
@@robbiefishing 👍🎣😂🤙🇦🇺

I get the odd roach out my local creek down here to mate question please what do you prefer running sinker or paternoster I've always been a running sinker man
Thanks Jeff. I'm sure you would recognise this place, just around the corner from your old boat shed.
I tend to prefer the running sinker, although some day the paternoster rig will outfish the running sinker. Some days it goes the other way.
@@robbiefishing yes mate surely know where you were beautiful sun rise
Do a Roach catch and cook on your trangia please robbie
Haha that would certainly be interesting. LOL
Hey Robbie here in the UK the Roach can get to a decent size with the record of just over 4lb and i've had a few over 2lb. In the winter the best bait that i use is bread but they will also take maggots and sometimes small worms.
Hi mate, that's awesome. Thanks for the great insight. A 4lb roach would be a lot of fun to reel in.
@@robbiefishing Check out Pole Fishing, these are long take apart poles made mostly of carbon and very light. These are great for using very light line and tackle but they're also being used to target Carp in the lakes mostly in competitions.
I really miss home
You said you dont think they grow very big but i bet theres some monsters hidden in there. With roach its just a numbers game, you have to get through thousands of small ones to find the big ones.
Thanks mate, that's awesome. Hopefully I can catch one of those big ones some day. 👍
Apparently you can eat them but I reckon it'd be a struggle to get much off the Roach. Interesting to see them, none where I am or were I grew up as I think they were only in the southern part of NSW unless someone cut them loose elsewhere in the state
I'm not sure if their distribution sorry mate. I believe they're not good eating, but it wouldn't hurt to try. Haha 😅😅
Bbie the roach looks like a Coorong mullet are they any good to eat.
I'm not sure sorry. I believe they're very Bony but I've never tried one.
Hey Robbie, what is the best hooks to use on a running sinker rig.
Hi mate, bait holder hooks are my favourites.
@@robbiefishing would it not gut hook the fish?
Tench is a carp with no barbels. Grows big like a carp. Have caught a couple in the river Torrens years ago.
Are you serious I live in Adelaide fish the Torrens alot only caught carp catfish and giant goldfish in there would love to catch a tench
Yes was about 30 years ago. I fished the Torrens near Allenby gdns towards Henley beach. Was definitely Tench as knew my fish.
@@paullubcke8554 wow thanks so much for telling us I knew there was black fish in there years ago
Hi mate, tench are actually different to carp. They have a few similarities, but there's also a lot of differences. Carp grow much bigger than tench. Tench don't over populated like carp do. Some people actually call them Doctor Fish due to their ability to heal sick fish.
Yes Robbie was around the 1 kg mark for both captures. Having no barbels was the give away and made me learn about the difference.
Can we use redfin for bait and do cod eat redfin??🤔🤔
We can use them as yabby bait and crayfish bait but I don't know if we can use them as live bait.
If you google Roach fish on the Victorian fisheries website, it states that it is not recommended to return them back to the water, they may impact native fish. But I've got an ap called "my fishing mate" which states that they are a feral species and do not return them to the water, dispatch humanely.
So I'm not sure. I suppose it's up to the individual person what they think?
Cheers Dave
Thanks Dave. I'm happy to return them. Unlike carp they don't grow big. Even a full sized roach will still be a meal for a large Lake Eildon Murray cod.
Between them and the redfin, the cod must have a great renewable food source.
tench are different to roatch tench are like a small smooth carp my grandfather used to catch them when he was a boy in England
Thanks mate. That is correct. Apparently tench can actually have a positive impact on other species. Some people call them a Dr Fish.
I've never heard of a roach fish. They remind me of shiners. We use shiners for bait but they can grow pretty big.
Thanks mate. They're an interesting species of introduced fish.
I would love to catch roach, or even tench, I love the European species we have here, it adds to the diverse fishing, except when they destroy the underwater environment. We should have specifically designed lakes just for these type of species, honestly would love a carp pond like in the UK specifically feeding them so much they become the giant carp seen over there.
I've been following a friend of mine who has been catching huge carp in a pond in England. It looks like so much fun.
@@robbiefishing always looks like an insane fight on them, i have caught a carp over a metre, thought it was a giant cod at first. caught it on a cheap kmart rod with 4lb line.
those roach look tasty. how do they cook up? anyone know?
I believe they are very Bony but I've never tried myself.
Never fished for roach or tench. They are two on my wish (hope) list.
I've caught both now. I'd never caught a road until about 2 years ago. I have caught a few tench many years ago, but none since I started my CZcams channel. I need to catch one for my channel.
Come to SA with Frank and Doug we will find you a Tinca (tench) 👍
@@dougpetty6854 THAT would be awesome. Great company and a fish I have never caught.
I love doing a boat ram run fishing at night under lights town or out of town best 18 lizards 5 jacks. Fun as lures soft plastics no weight just plastic with jig hook with large lock on it bait junkie jigs3/8oz 5/0. Just take weight off eyelet brilliant hook.
That sounds like a lot of fun Brett, awesome. 👍👍
@@robbiefishing Brisbane area it good lit up all over. Get a uber share with a friend rum run lol 😂.
Me and those Roach have the same scientific name .... ha ha !
Hahaha 🤣🤣🤣
Are red fin native?
Hi Catherine, no they are an introduced species.
@@robbiefishing but they aren’t pests are they like the other fish sorry the name has just gone out of my head
@@catherinekamoen6685 some people love them and others hate them. They are a pest, but unlike carp they're an edible pest that tastes fantastic.
Yes first comment
Well done mate.
Does he reply?
He replied last time you asked him..
I would have used one as a live bait ....
Roach grow to 50cm but they normally grow to 35 cm
WOW I've never caught one over about 25cm.
Roach catch and cook? 🤣
Haha how much are you willing to pay me? 😜
Roach aren't EASY to catch!
I've never tried to catch them. I just keep catching them as a by-catch. Haha
@@robbiefishing Prob depends on WHERE you're fishing for them.
I've found around here, they tend to bite real finicky & often won't take worms, & only want bread/dough baits!
Don't ENCROACH on the roach!
the Bible is the only bible
Amen. 🙏
