      I liked Love Story better. The reason is because in that story Oliver and Jenny were a better-matched couple. Although they came from different walks of life, intellectually they shared some interests and values. In The Way We We’re, we are supposed to feel sad that Katie and Hubble broke up. However, there were plenty of signs right from the beginning that they were not right for each other. Oliver and Jenny were, and they could have had a long and happy life together if her disease had not cut her life short.

    Love is simply not enough. I feel they both loved each other but they were total opposites . It’s been proven that whatever extreme opposite attracts one is the exact same thing that will drive you away. He knew it wouldn’t work out but there was chemistry and she convinced him of it. I also believe they both ‘settled’ for another spouse at the end. The last scene tells it all, the sparks were still there but Hubble was content in his comfort zone, and continued as always, never staying loyal to anyone, even his new wife. He admitted he had never been a GOOD gentile boy. In general, people do not change , the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour., unless there’s been a major shift in consciousness.

    • @jschuler53
      @jschuler53 Před 2 lety +5

      mona2242 wow. well said. I believe in major shifts in consciousness if a person is open to change. But sadly I think few are. It can open up whole new worlds and parts of yourself. No, Hubble was the one and he was INDEED like the country he grew up in---everything came too easily for him, and for him that was enough AND yet, the really sad part is Hubble will never know what he missed bc he couldn't get out of his comfort zone. He was a big fish in a big pond and he missed the love of his love. He was afraid to give all that up. And it is a hard ask. Still, he should have done it. Good point about him never being loyal to anyone, not even himself. IF he was he would have changed after he wrote that great short story in college which seemed to reveal his true self and a great deal of self-awareness which instantly disappeared in the movie. Still a great film...even for men.

    Some people may be attracted to each other but they cannot stay together for a long time because they are very different. And if so, some people are wise to focus on what they liked about each other. That is how I understand this movie. Some men just cannot handle when a woman is to demanding, is pushing hard, they feel they do not have their own space. So, if you care for someone try to understand him and see how you two fit together because Mr. Darcy is only in Jane Austin's dreams, I think.

I mean, he doesn't like that she pushes too hard, even if it's part of her and, on the other hand, she doesn't like that he wants a concrete, serene living, without getting involved in sociale matters. I think the point is that they are both sincerely in love and they can't help it, but they are just too different. Point is she is a bold type and wants to live the story all the same, as she is convinced things can get better, while he is some sort of coward, who just accepts the reality as it is. In fact, in the end, he just seems frustrated of having renounced to her, while she appears to be more serene, just for having tried.

    • @pam0626
      @pam0626 Před 4 lety +16

      I don’t think it was a ‘good’ vs ‘evil’ dynamic that broke them up; rather, it was Hubbell’s complacency, his preference for wanting to live an easy, unexamined life against Katie’s desire for social justice during a volatile time that doomed the relationship. Fate had blessed him with everything on a silver platter: WASP background, good looks, intelligence, literary talent. He was smart enough to know how incredibly lucky he was and didn’t want to rock the boat. All he needed was a docile trophy wife and his life would be set. But fate had a sense of humor and sent him Katie instead, and he fell head over heels in love. She wasn’t part of the plan. Rationally, he knew it wouldn’t work even before they married, but love won out.
      Hubbell was committed to Katie throughout their marriage but the country’s political unrest, and their opposing reactions to it, did them in. Hubbell by nature wasn’t a cheater; cheating was a way for him to FINALLY make Katie leave him, because she would have fought for their marriage to the death. She was that tenacious about the people and causes she loved. He had to do something so irredeemable in her eyes that she would finally give up, so he chose JJ’s wife. When Katie asks him in the screening room, “Did you have to go back to Beeckman Place?” it represented her deepest insecurities with JJ’s crowd, who always made her feel like an outcast.
      Lastly, I think he gave up his daughter not because he was a deadbeat dad, but because it was just too painful for both of them to co-parent if they couldn’t be together. They still loved each other too much, but Katie finally understood, like Hubbell, that they should not be together. It’s no excuse, just a theory...

Loving someone means letting them work things out for themselves, and not to keep pushing your ideas on them....

      I think she also should have found someone else who was closer to her own political views, who shared her values and her passions. All they had going for them from the beginning was physical attraction and chemistry, but it didn’t mean they were compatible. I think it just shows that chemistry is not enough to build a lasting relationship if there are no shared interests and values.

      I think a lot of times in real life, opposites do attract, but it often doesn’t go beyond just an initial attraction. It can’t make a long term relationship last, especially if the differences are about things like politics or religion, which are things that people take very seriously and emotionally. In my opinion, Katie and Hubble both tried to change each other to fit into their own world view, and that didn’t work.

Can't say that he took the initiative for her in that way, however.

    Hubble had everything. Looks and money. He does not understand fighting and protesting. He wants to look good and be rich. He may be shallow but he can afford to be. Lol. The lady wanted him to be something that he could not be. She was desperate for his love but annoying by trying to change him. She knew who he was when she met him. That is all he can be. She is a pretty woman and does not have to beg a man to love her. That annoyed me about this movie. Her low self esteem. A lot of her movies cast her as a desperate ugly woman. I don’t like it. She deserves better than that. She directs movies just like the men.

      Well this clip just come up as a sync, and Im thinking 'shit this is me and my twin' because he, an incredibly gorgeous older consultant doctor where I worked as a nursing assistant, he would stare at me, flirt with me, come up to my ward just to see me, but in the end chose to stay with his air hostess GF whilst I, a lil bit wilder and spiritual wasnt chosen. He also had some harem of cluckers around him, they adored him but hated me and I dont do harems ;)
      I always said I just wasnt beautiful enough 'for him' but I am my own kind of beautiful'. I then left our work without saying goodbye and hit travelling on the road nearly 2 years ago, but he still keeps showing up in syncs and dreams. He made his choice, I made mine....I am worth more and I could never trust him again even though we werent together. When this happens with a twin, you wish they werent your twin...all hope goes, all desire for life goes. As much as I live my life, I long to leave this plane. And even in death, I wish I could be not a twin.
