@@jmadratz Many years ago Redford might have been a conservative before Republicans lost their minds but not in recent years. Redford endorsed both Obama and Biden for president, and has been publicly VERY critical of Trump saying "he lacks a moral compass". He also supports environmentalism, Native American rights, and LGBT rights. There is no way you can add up all that and call Redford a conservative today.

The reason why Robert Redford deserved this award even more than the picture itself: It's all about DIRECTing. I have never seen another movie, where a DIRECTOR gets so much out of such kind of a cast. I have nothing against Timothy Hutton or Judd Hirsch, but be honest: Their performances in Ordinary People are by far the best of both of their careers. Mary Tyler Moore plays a character nobody ever would have believed she would be capable of. Just a reminder: Moore was at the time an actress famous for TV comedy series like the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Transforming her charming personality in such a "perfect unlikable" mother, which we hate for her actions and admire for the acting, is simply astonishing. And even Donald Sutherland did one hell of job, although the tone of the movie wasn't new ground for him. To summarize: The reason, why such an unusual cast could have worked so perfect, is the marvelous direction by Robert Redford. And that's why he deserved this in my humble opinion (slightly) over Scorsese for Raging Bull.

I love Robert Redford. For all the people saying Scorsese should have won, he was fairly new to the Academy game while Redford had been considered snubbed by the Oscars for years. Redford wasn't nominated for several movies he should have been nominated for (The Candidate, Butch and Sundance, Downhill Racer, etc.) so it was about time the Academy gave him recognition. Scorsese's win came late, but so did Redford's. I'm glad he won.

I just watched ordinary people again at the age of 34, after seeing it first when I was 20 years old. after being profoundly moved by this film at an emotional age of 20, I was surprised that I was even more moved by seeing this film recently a second time, after being emotionally numb to a majority of the films of the recent years (last film that had a deep impact on me was the social network). after all these years I have realized that who the director was, what actor deserved to win the Oscar, what other film was more deserving to be the best picture, etc. is all secondary to sitting down, planting your eyes on the screen, and being deeply emotionally moved by a film. this film has moved me more than any other film I have ever seen in my life, and I am truly grateful for that. in a close second is a film called whale rider. in third I have rocky 1. obviously different people are going to have different films that move them for different reasons, as no two people are the same. but ordinary people, whale rider and rocky 1 are my top 3.

James Bonogofski, I was 19 the first time I saw "Ordinary People" and it blew me away just as you describe in your experience. Now, at 36 and having just watched it again tonight, it still resonates profoundly and deeply. It deserved every award it received in 1981. It's a phenomenal film, and still one of the best and most emotionally impactful for me personally as well.
