The song is a response to a short story collection called Bukan Perawan Maria (Not Virgin Mary) by Indonesian author Feby Indirani. If you search youtube for LontarFoundation Feby Indirani it should take you to an interview with the author. At 2:56 she talks about Bukan Perawan Maria (English subtitles available). They wrote the song in high school (2017?), with lyrics that were all in Bahasa Indonesia. The English verse is newer, and is slightly different than the English translation of the old version. Musixmatch has a translation (search for Musixmatch Perempuan Merdeka Seutuhnya). I think I know why they kept the chorus in Indonesian - the assonance and alliteration in "Aku bukan budak busuk otakmu" are just incredible. How could you ever match that in English and come close to keeping the meaning? People raised in a Christian society may be surprised by Mary showing up in an Islamic context, but she appears more often in the Koran than the bible (check Wikipedia for Mary in Islam). The arrangement of the song is also quite different from early versions, but you can pretty easily tell that it's the same song. Despite the conditions they were in, there wasn't a trace of fatigue in the songs they produced.
