  • Vladimir Guerrero Sr. was such a unique ballplayer! No matter where the ball was located, there was a good chance that it was leaving the building. And he wasn’t afraid to jump on the first pitch. In fact, he hit 126 home runs in these situations, more than Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire! And if you’re a pitcher, don’t fall behind Vlad, because on 3-1 counts, he hit .417. And how can you forget about his absolute missile in right field?! As you can already tell, there’s a lot to discuss surrounding the life and career of Vlad Sr.
    Players relevant to the video: Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Wilton Guerrero, Andruw Jones, Felipe Alou, Pedro Martinez, Sammy Sosa, Jose Canseco, Benny Agbayani, Alberto Castillo, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Francisco Rodriguez (K-Rod), Chris Tillman, Felix Pie, Jonathan Papelbon, Andy Pettitte, Julio Franco, Adrian Beltre, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Mel Ott, David Ortiz, Albert Pujols

    Vlad actually hit 40 home runs in 2002. In Olympic Stadium, he hit an opposite field homer that went off the scoreboard just above the wall in right-center. However, the umpires thought it hit off the top of the wall and only got a double. He was robbed of a 40-40 season.

      I found the video evidence! About 1 minute and 27 seconds into the video. It was only a single, not a double, but the ball clearly hit the scoreboard, then off the top of the wall, and back into the field of play!

    Vlad was probably the best free swinger ever. Dude could barrel up anything, Had a cannon for an arm, he could steal some bases, did not strike out a ton. 5 tool player very fun to watch. A definate favorite.

    Tons of things that I love about Vlad, but my favorite is: while everyone was out in the field stretching and warming up before games, he would spend the whole time inside playing MLB on PlayStation, virtually batting against the actual opposing starting pitcher of the game.

  • @jamesesterline
    @jamesesterline Před 10 měsíci +35

    Vlad was my favorite player to use in MLB Power Pros. I'm honestly shocked no team picked him up as a DH in 2012 or 2013, he probably had enough gas left in the tank to reach 3,000 hits and 500 homers.

    • @AD-df5tm
      @AD-df5tm Před 10 měsíci +3

      He would have needed probably 4 or 5 years to get to those numbers. He was 51 HR and 410 hits short. Considering his knees were shot I doubt he ever would have made it even if someone did give him a contract.
      The Jays actually did sign him to a minor league deal in 2012 but he asked to be released when they said he wouldn't be promoted to MLB

    • @AD-df5tm
      @AD-df5tm Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@leonzaduncan2438ecause if you look at literally anything other than batting avg, he wasn't very good. he posted a .317 OBP and a .417 SLG which are both terrible for a guy who can only DH. In fact he was the worst DH in MLB in 2011.
      He was a 38 year old, below avg hitter who couldn't play the field and had terrible knees. It's not a shock he didn't get signed.

    • @tornadotom2390
      @tornadotom2390 Před 9 měsíci

      @@AD-df5tm.290 is NOT below average. He's knees were gone and yes he was old but don't try to make it sound like he was trash. That's crazy regardless of the other pct% hitting .290 does not make you a below average hitter. 51 hrs in 5 years, yeah he would've definitelymade it if healthy enough to play. He prob wouldn't have made it to 3000 hits though.

    After seeing his son just win the HR Derby, I immediately thought of how absurdly dominant Vlad Sr was in the roids era. I recall my early childhood years falling in love with baseball and marveling at these numbers he and his contemporaries were putting up at the time. Seeing his outfield assists highlights on the SportsCenter Top 10 and Baseball Tonight was a regular viewing. Younger fans who marvel at Vlad Jr need to watch this vid.

    He didn't just "hit a dinger and drove in 6" in the 2004 playoffs. His homer was a two out grand slam to tie the game in the 7th on the road in Boston (in a elimination game too). They still loss the series but that was a huge moment for Vlad in his first playoffs ever. C'mon my guy good video but slightly more research would've shown you that! All good though like I said good video Vladdy was one of my generations best. Too often overlooked.

    I think a break down of how Ryne Sandberg changed 2b power expectations or Barry Larkin being the start of the era of shortstops hitting and not just playing defense.

    Surprised you didn't include Albert Pujols on the list of players who struck out the same amount or less than Vlad Guerrero. Both Averaged 74 per 162 games for their career. I guess if you actually do the math, Pujols might be a TINY bit behind Guerrero, but if you actually pulled the stats through roughly the same amount of games played, Pujols definitely was ahead. Either way interesting video.

    Amazing player. Even though 2011 he hit a career low 290 its ridiculous he didn't get picked up. A guy who always hit 300 or better in all but 2 seasons & just missing 300 by a handful of hits in those 2 seasons should have been respected enough to make a club.
