There is a chargin voltage to note too, which depends on protocol and handshake, where specific cable brands contain a handshaking chip, which does or does not allow fast/superfast charging, depending on the attached phone brand.
Liron your videos are always informative and interesting to watch thanks for always bringing the good stuff
❤ I loved this bc it was so confusing to understand, but not now. Thank you, Liron!
Good information here. I spent a bit of time to do some research and what you have said confirms it. I purchased a replacement 3 pin double socket with 2 x USB A & 1 x USB C sockets built in with 3.6 amps maximum output. I still have my 2017 LG G6 phone which can be charged to a maximum 18 watts with a QC3 standard cable. I use the USB C socket and cable to charge my phone and from empty to 50% takes about half an hour and another hour and 20 minutes from 50% to 100%. I am still on the original battery and I put it on charge every night with the occasional full discharge & recharge.
Professor Segev for the win! Once again … clarity in IT! Thank you kind sir!
Thank you kindly!
I figured how fast your phone charges is also affected by if you are using it or not as well, i.e. have a couple of apps running vs. not having any apps running or even have the phone turned off.
My phone turn on once OFF and chargers plug in....
Never dead with power....
Thank You Liron, this was very interesting!
Glad it was helpful!
Never knew about the blue VS black coloured USB-C cables...or the USC to USC cables/chargers.
Thanks...
Its not realy true) how about white one?
I want to know why nearly all phone power banks are usb a output and not c
and here I am using a USB 1.0 white cable. Never knew there was a difference, so thank you! Definitely going to be getting a blue one now.
Well if your phone came with white it wont make much difference, as thats what the phone co designed it for.
@@EmeraldHill-vo1cs It didn't, I have a habit of going through wires like crazy, but I appreciate the extra information for wires in the future! Thank you.
google your phone model and its charging wattage. If it's above 5W then you could use a better charging cable and/or brick.
Too fast charging would overheat both the battery and the phone. Use caution. Avoid letting your phone run down in full sunlight. I let that happen to a phone and in a few weeks, had to replace it due to miserable battery life.
*enjoyed this very informative video better than the others out there*
Good information but I have to admit, I take the easy way out and use the charger that came with the phone. I, also, set the limit to 85% as recommended by Samsung.
What an amazingly easy way to understand this information, thank you.
You're very welcome!
Thank you ❤
An absolutely awesome & excellent video!!!
Could you do a video comparing the USB-C vs mini-USB type charger?
Mini USB is USB 2.0.
@@Devo_gx Ohhh! Thank you!!
That’s exactly how it works. Thank you for this
Excellent, just what I needed for my insomnia, muahahaha! Seriously though, it was serious though. Gotta get one of those testers for the USB - so cool! I'll like on for a headband to wear to monitor brain activity (on those special days when there is some). Good job Mr. - you do good works 🙂
This is very informative
Another great and helpful video. Does this info also apply to charging in a vehicle? I notice my phone , my gps or any device, takes forever to charge while on trips or driving around town.
The ports in many vehicles are just USB 2.0 so you're likely stuck at 5 or maybe 10W maximum. There are cigarette lighter (12V) adapters that'll let you quick charge
Yes, i noticed that as well. The power that the engine provides must be way lower than the power the mains provide.
this is something I've been wanting to hear... the tester will be very useful once I get my hands on one.
Hope you enjoy it!
Wouldn't also make a difference on which USB port you used to plug the cord into your laptop?
Another question is whether constantly quick charging lessens the overall battery life compared to slower charging. Also do charge cycles matter, or does say 80% to 100% over and over again make any long term difference from allowing the battery to deplete to say 20% before charging to full.
I've wondered if quick charging lessens the life of the battery too
Yeah, I have the same question. Similar, I have always wondered how to get the most life out of these batteries. I have read varying ideas on the topic. Some people say to top off when you hit 50%, but, who knows if that's right. Anyway, I have been wondering about how fast charging plays a role in all of this.
Most of the opinions by "experts" claim, the way to extend the life of the battery, is by charge them at 20% to 80% charged. I hope Liron will cover this matter some day. Thank you LIron for all your great information always!
@@suntzu2ya358 Yeah, that's what I am talking about.. I have heard similar but more recently heard that it should be changed to 100% when the level is at 50% Who knows what actually works?! 😁
@@DeadDad1 I've noticed a setting on my Samsung called Protect Battery that limits the maximum charge to 85%. This seems to indicate the issue is with charging to max capacity rather than charging fast or slow.
This cleared a lot of my confusion in this area.
Same.
Great post. Now if by chance, can you cover wireless charging? And any differences in that realm. Thanks for all you do to keep us informed.
Great suggestion!
First, it is wasting energy. Bad charger can have a 200% higher idle power consumption compared to the power supply alone. Second, they are slower but that is better for the battery.
Their main advantage is in public places like an airport or a restaurant. You do not need cables and your phone can not be infected with malware!
@@mrcvry This man is 100% correct. They do waste power but are convenient and no data can travel across ✔
I only buy 100W USB C-C cables. then use adapters that support high amperage charging.
it saves me a lot of issues, since I know all my cables are the same type of cable. and not a cable that is QC3 compliant, and another that is QC4 compliant
lol, just know the max supported wattage of your phone. No point in buying a 100w cable when your phone only supports 25w.
@@imarchello I use them for my laptop as well. it saves the headache when you need a correctly rated cable.
Help! I couldn't find any solid information anywhere. Can i use a 65watt or 30 watt charger from another phone company to charge my 45watt charging phone? Thanks in advance
Thank you for explaining these chargers in layman's terms. I now know what what the difference colours are 😊
What's the name of the charging brick you used?
One thing about phone charging that everyone seems to have a different opinion on is whether to unplug the phone once it is fully charged... I would love to see some definitive answers on that one.
the phone works best when its at 50%, so when it reaches 100% it completes a cycle. They say you should disconnect it and let it cycle down vs having it constantly plugged in so it doesn't keep "topping up". Modern phones these days are pretty good at managing that vs older phones that weren't. Personally I disconnect at 100%.
Samsung recommends that the phone should be charged to 85%. There is a setting for that.
Definitive answer is your battery doesnt like extremes, dont discharge past 15-20%, also dont charge past 85-90%. How long can you prolong battery life this way, 6 months, a year, i dont know, but it will degrade slower then if you dont care. So yes, disconect it when full, it will spend less time in more stressfull state.
Edit: theres an app, accubattery that explains quite well how charging affects battery as closer to 100% you go, battery cycles and stuff
@@LironSegev The new Samsung S23u has the 85% setting. You can also use the new routines to automatically stop charging at any percentage you want.
@@dim3nt0 Well, true but. FWIW: I have an old Note 8 that still works great and holds a charge with normal use for 2 whole days charged to 100% each time. Kinda blows that theory out the window.
The cable I use to charge my phone has a white connector not a blue or black what does that mean for my phone.?

Why does the measuring device sometimes read 9 volts output from the charger? That seems to be way too high for a charger and possibly bad for the battery.

I have USB cables that are neither blue nor black, they are white. What does that mean?
When using a fast charging plug, does it matter what cable you use? Meaning slandered I got a cable with my fast charging plug, can I still use my old cable that came with my standard plug ?
ideally you should be using a USB C cable. If you are using USB A cable, then use a "blue one" which is USB 2.0
@@LironSegev Thanks for your reply Liron and making things clear. Have a good day
Hi, what is the full name for the tester at minute 6:48 , because I want to buy online.
Links is in the description
The best and most simple explanations I’ve watched on You Tube were from two electricians and they both said exactly the same things. 1. Use your original cable that came with your device. 2. Make sure the charger has the same Voltage as the Voltage input of your device. 3. Make sure the Amp output of the charger is equal to or higher than the Amp input of your device. The device will only draw what it needs so won’t be damaged if the Amps from the charger are higher. If it is lower, in extreme cases it can damage your device. Using a charger with a different Voltage can also damage your device.
Also using a different charger/ cable will void any warranty.
@@EmeraldHill-vo1cs yes but it’s okay when out of warranty. I just bought some earbuds and a Bluetooth speaker from the same manufacturer and neither had a charger, just the cables so I bought a charger based on the video I watched from the same manufacturer and it’s been superb.

Ok, i have samsung NOTE 20 ULTRA 5G, with samsung fast charge. I noticed phone will say fast charging with my chrome book charger, vs "super fast charging " with the one i bought for my phone from "Tmobile " ... also what's your thoughts on the "batter saver option " it has option to max charge the phone to 85%, for Battery life. Which i use being i can charge it so fast, why am i worried bout that 15%. Thanks again for awesome knowledge!
yes - Samsung phones have additional settings you can change to get "super fast charging", and as you saw, charging from a wall outlet is better than from a laptop/ chromebook. Personally, I wouldn't enable that as it just heats up the battery which reduces its lifespan. If I was in a rush and needed it then I would do it, but not permanently. Just my personal view.
@@LironSegev some laptops can dish out 2-3 amps on their usb ports, my 2015 thinkpad charges at 1.5amps usb a to usb c
Awesome. Thanks for letting us know! Loads of factors here so good to be aware of options!
Samsung has a limit to 85% wich is great but you are not doing battery a favor if you are constantly charging as fastest as possible. You can choose to either care and try to prolong battery, slow charge, charge limit or just dont care and go all out and replace the battery when it goes. Either is fine.
My cable is not blue or black, it's purple...?

Never try to charge from a computer via a USB hub that has got other devices plugged in to it. It is just about a total waste of time and I have noticed that the power can even start cycling up and down that can lead to the phone connecting and disconnecting to the computer constantly. If possible always use a mains charger as it will always be more effective than charging from a computer.
Don’t forget iPhone users, with the new update, Apple opted your phone into “Clean Energy Charging” that limits how fast your phone charges depending on the availability of renewable’s. You have to disable it.

Awesomeness. And yes I love the Pixel range of phones and don't use any others.
This is why I won't buy a phone that doesn't come with an official charger, it's disgraceful to sell phones for hundreds yet not provide one. It's like they are negating responsibility if you use the wrong charger.
My usb is white
Interesting 😅 👌 👍
Very!
Fast charging overheating the battery, isn't this shorting the life of the battery and fire hazard?
My Samsung phone warns me if I am using a slower type 2.0 cable and only supports slow charging, but if I change it out to a better cable will tell me it's fast charging. One advantage of the higher wattage multiple port chargers is that it can charge multiple devices at once (just be sure not to overload) or supports larger devices like tablets or even chromebooks or macbooks. I also recently got a nice beefy 120 W Araimo charger (about the size of a square pocket tape measure) which came nicely packaged with 3 USBC and 1 USB-A port. Lately I've been going nuts with these chargers and cables (you can never have too many!) but so far no issues. Some safety notes - don't overload, don't use attended and don't use the plugged in phone in the bath or shower. Although the UL/CE safety tested and double insulated models are safe 99.999% of the time, you don't want to risk your life in case of a breach which can happen if the unit gets wet r or in case of defect. Usually there is good isolation between the HV and LV sides of the charger, but some cheap models cut it really close.
As long as you keep the charger block away from water the USB (low voltage wires) cannot hurt you unless you stick them in your mouth. You can take your phone plugged in and charging with a USB type a, b, or c into the tub with you and submerge it in the water. As long as the block that plugs into the 120vac is away from the water you only destroyed your phone. Again, 5vdc cannot hurt you unless you stick it in you mouth.
Is it still frowned upon to charge and use the same device at the same time?
Phones shouldn't go to 100% It burns the battery.
Mine is not PD2 or PD3🤧🤧🤧 It is only PD 😢😢😢😢

Why is charging at 9v when using USB-C? That doesn't hurt the battery?
This was a helpful video. My only comment is that modern chargers support a wide array of voltages and currents to provide higher power, but this negotiation is done directly between the power brick and the device. Putting the meter in the middle limits the power to 10 watts (5V/2A). USB-C PD is capable of up to 100 watts (20V/5A), and even more on some newer versions. USB-A with QC 3.0 is capable of up to 36 watts (12V/3A). The negotiation occurs upon cable connection, and the device will only draw the power it is capable of safely absorbing, at a current the cable is capable of safely delivering.
Exactly ! Am stunned that he is making all these blant statements when the usb power meter is in the middle. Your only getting 1.9amps because thats the maximum your meter probably can deliver.
If you want to get a more accurate amp readings do it through the fone kernel by using an app that can read real time amp input like "cpufloat" or an app that can log volts and and amps when the screen is off for the most accurate reading like "3C battery manager" or etc . As some fones will charge at a lower amp when the screen is on to avoid higher charging temp.
Which is the main variable that decides wether your fone will charge to full in fast or slow effect. is based on the fone battery "TEMPERATURE"
To OP: you need to redo all your testing with the fone connected directly to the wall adapter with "NO USB METER" in between. And you should account for ambient temp and fone battery temp.
Also make sure the fone is already fully booted and running all processes. Not like that dead fone which only started to boot after you connected the charger ( btw every fone will charge at 1.8 ~ 1.9 amp as its like the basic failsafe maximum 5v charginf rate. However after the fone boots up only then it will start nagotiating with the charger. ( of course there could be small differences from a manufacturer to other but thats mostly how it is.
Last thing, its not true that your fone charge fast at 1.9 till 50% then switch to trickle.
While the highest amps will be fed the lower and the cooler the battery is However, its not constant current. The amps will gradually get lower till its fully charged.
In other words most fones should fast charge till around 80%, then it will switch to trickle or the equivlent of 1 amp ( which also gradually decreses till 0 amp = fully charged.
Hope that helps !
Use powerbank please
good idea
I know you did not talk much about iPhone, but as of iOS 13, Apple added Optimize Charging feature which affects how fast the battery charges. When an iPhone runs an Optimize Charge cycle it takes much longer for the battery to charge.

Every now and then some products are forbidden to sell. Sometimes even forced to ask dangerous products back from consumers. This product testing is very limited and rare. Usb chargers are sometimes too small and dont have enough separation between mains voltage 230V and output.

It’s funny how one can tell from which generation you are based on the hysterical amount of nonsense in how you even managed to make this a generation issue. Funny as well how it comes from the generation who made tech companies the way they are today.
Besides, I’ll take my chances with better charges instead of those given by companies which are purposely trying to damage your battery, making it impossible for DIY repair so you have to purchase a new phone from said company.

Can you elaborate on that? How does thw source of power affects phones?
Is the phone being connected directly to the car battery? That would be bad. But the output of a USB car charger is no different to the output of a switched mode power supply i.e. the tech used to convert AC mains power to DC.
