The Justinus Ensemble is delighted to present the Dutch première of Thomas Hewitt Jones's and Matt Harvey's “Can you hear me?”
Written to raise awareness of mental-health and loneliness issues during lockdown, this beautiful song captures the spirit of reaching out to one another in difficult times.
This performance was recorded live in the Hooglandse Kerk in Leiden, the Netherlands, without an audience. The church, of cathedral dimensions, is used by two congregations on Sundays and is available for commercial hire on other days.
During the lockdown, almost all activities in the church ceased, save for live-streamed and pre-recorded services with severely-limited numbers of people, and the chance to visit at specific times with strict distancing.
This film, produced by manager Peter Breedijk, shows the ways of life that have become all too familiar in recent months: face-coverings, hand-sanitiser, empty public spaces, and at the same time we hope it gives you, the viewer, a message of hope.

Vanuit de Hooglandse Kerk komt de Nederlandse première van "Can you hear me?" Een lied geschreven om mensen bewust te maken van de problematiek rondom geestelijke gezondheid en eenzaamheid tijdens de “lockdown.” “Can you hear me?” draagt de kracht uit van naar elkaar omzien in moeilijke tijden.
Dit optreden werd, zonder publiek, live opgenomen in de Hooglandse Kerk in Leiden. Vanwege de strengere “lockdown” in het Verenigd Koninkrijk betekent dit dat het de live première van het werk is.
Deze film, geproduceerd Peter Breedijk, toont beelden die de afgelopen maanden maar al te bekend zijn geworden: gezichtsbedekkingen, handdesinfecterend middel en lege openbare ruimtes. Tegelijkertijd hopen we dat het voor u, de kijker, een boodschap van hoop uitdraagt.
