Alex Rudinger - Bad Wolves - "Officer Down"

- I was recently contacted / hired by Bad Wolves to learn their set list. Their drummer, John Boecklin, hurt his back, & they were unsure if he'd be able to continue on tour. I learned ten songs over three days & was asked to remain on standby. Thankfully, in the week that followed, John's back started getting better, & he was able to push through. John & I got to talking a lot via text during that time and he is an INCREDIBLY nice guy. Needless to say, I'm glad that he was able to continue with his band!
I recorded a few videos of my favorites from the set - this play-through of "Officer Down" is my second upload. These songs are fun as HELL to play! If you haven't heard of Bad Wolves, check out their debut album "Disobey" - it rules. In general, it was great getting to know / talking to some of the members - they're all incredibly professional & very nice guys. Additionally, their cover of "Zombie" by The Cranberries, & what they're doing with the proceeds (donating them to the family / children of Dolores O'Riordan) is truly amazing. Very standup guys to say the least!
Mixing for this video was done by fellow Tama Artist / Sick Guy / GOOD BUDDY Anup Sastry. Anup killed it on the mix - drums are all natural except for the kick which is a natural / sample blend (ratio: 80% natural, 20% trigger). I’ve been following your channel and career the last four years solid. You’re existing talent, and the strive to make it more solidified in surrounding genres of music, has inspired me to really put the time and effort into being more than just a metal drummer. I know it’s typically frowned upon to do so but I’m always trying to compare my video content to yours to see if I’m heading in the right direction. Really bad ass drumming and great natural drumsound. Like it a lot sounds not that much triggered.
The only thing I ever trigger is the kick drum, & for the most part I don't even do that anymore. Only if it's a "super metal" song w/ lots of double kick. Even then, it's a natural / trigger blend (see video description for details). This song was a trigger / natural mix for kick drum (80% natural, 20% trigger). Everything else is natural, just hit really hard & mixed very well.

YouAllJackasses interesting how you know how tired Alex is when he is drumming, I'm sure he has excellent endurance considering the hundreds of shows he has played for numerous bands throughout the years. What are the issues with his technique too?

Oh my gosh come on! He leans forward to find balance during quick double bass drumming, I catch myself doing the same thing. From what I can see in the video this has nothing to do with the layout of the set.

Why have you over the years strayed away from the Symmetrical kit layout, and gone back to a mostly traditional right handed setup? I played a symmetrical kit for some time, and my kit is still mostly symmetrical, but has some right handed aspects to it.
What are the reasons you decided to transition back away from pure symmetry and away from the right side hi hat stand?

Honestly, I mostly did it because of live performance / setup. For fly dates / traveling, it was incredibly difficult to always have / request what I needed to make the full-on "symmetrical" setup. I figured it would be best to get used to playing on a SLIGHTLY more "normal" setup so I could acclimate easier in those situations. Plus, it was a lot to setup 😂. I'm also naturally right-handed, so this setup feels just as (if not more) comfortable.
I still view this setup as somewhat "symmetrical" - the wide crashes, floor tom on either side, 10" tom centered. Only difference is there's less cymbals & a 12" tom thrown in. It's the most "happy medium" setup I've been able to find. I'll surely bring back the dual hats / rides when/if the gig calls for it. For these B.W. songs though, a smaller cymbal setup was all I needed.

Alex do you ever post any of your charts up? Do you transcribe it out note for note or do you write more of a short hand for reference?
I usually transcribe everything note for note (or close to - I will alter things slightly to suit my setup / style sometimes). The whole thing is a big part of the learning process for me, so even if it's an easier song, I'll still usually transcribe the entire thing. I have transcription books for sale on my website, but only albums that I've played on / written for. If you want some other transcriptions, shoot me an email directly!

Yeah it's an SM7 on the hi-hat. I actually bougth that mic for tracking vocals, but use it for hi-hat sometimes!
