Thanks for the video, my only comment, only slightly related to this video, is that RMWeb is destroying model railways. The self appointed (regularly wronged) 'experts' who criticise everything and everyone, but show nothing of their own work, and the people who have complete meltdowns over a minute printing error yet run theirs trains on nothing more than track on a board. Not to mention those who continually bleat on about price, yet buy everything (and criticise it).
These people give the hobby a bad name.
When I was a member of RMWeb I found these people completely sapped my enthusiasm for the hobby and I spent more and more time working on aviation kits rather than model railways. Since being away from it, I now have my enthusiasm back.

Great review Jenny - love that profile compared to the rest as well - a coup I feel for Heljan!

Hi, came across this review whilst looking for info on a problem I have with my new Heljan Class 25. I thought it was a good review and pointed out things I didn't know about. I purchased mine about 6 weeks ago and straight away had a problem - the cardan shaft was out of its socket at one end - I decided to fix it myself rather than send it back. However the problem I have now is trying to attach the couplings into the nem sockets, they don't want to go in.

It's very interesting to see how much progress has been made from the early "super detail" models of the turn of the century era.
Also, I see that these have the socket connexion for the no-solder modification for independent front/rear lights.

Why no holes in the wheels? You have to look at the published photographs of the SLW Class 25 to realise that the Sutton’s model will be the definitive Class 25, the detail is stunning, not sure about the Heljan model though that’s my opinion.

Brake shoes on the Heljan model are not in line with the wheels,on tha domino headcode versions, the 4 boxes show through the black area making it look wrong.SLW on order.Plus they are doing the earlier 25/1,see their announcement.

Tamworth Castle entered service in BR Blue with running number D7672. The first time the locomotive wore two tone green after becoming Holbeck training locomotive.
I am be getting SLW class D7672 Tamworth Castle with sound.

Thanks for the review. I've hidden the cab lights with a bit of insulating tape, and have done similar with one tail light. I might look at a slight mod to make the the tail lights switchable or do as I have with others which is to switch them off completely.

A great locomotive, the Class 25!! One of the better diesel locomotives. We have a two tone green one at the Epping Ongar Railway!! We also have a Class 31, a Class 37 and a Class 47 in our permanent fleet.

    Interesting video without a doubt.
I have pre-ordered however a Class 25/3 BR Polyurethane Blue with sound from SLW with a small yellow panel.
I have already a BR Blue 24009 from SLW which certainly does not disappoint in looks and sound.
I do have a Bachmann Class 25286 which still looks fine and the factory sound of that one comes close to the SLW 24009.
I will keep it next to the SLW 25 when I have it.

The new Heljan model is an absolutely top of the line model. The old version is rather a naff model as far as detail is concerned. A great piece of kit!!

The Heljan 25's are definitely really nice. Wouldve loved to get one but sadly the /3 locomotives are a bit late for my time period. Hopefully theyll make the other subclasses too.

A great review of what looks like a great new model. I have seen a couple of minor problems with D 7661 the head code end with 9T14 doesn't look right, the 9 seems to be at an angle and the fan grille when viewed from the side does also show like it is not fitted correctly. As I said only minor problems that you can fix as you are keeping the model. Martin. (Thailand)

Hi Jenny, nice video. I think that the reason why Heljan went with a non-powered version of the Ethels instead of leaving them powered (Like Rapido did with their Amtrak "Cabbage" F40PH rebuilds and the Long Island Rail Road Alco FA-2 "power packs" (both examples of non-powered ex-locomotives used as cab cars and/or power for coaches) probably had to do with speed matching them to the locomotive which would be hauling the train. It's bad enough to have to locomotives which aren't speed matched running together at the head of a train, where one engine is trying to run faster than the other, but to try that with a locomotive at each end of the train is courting disaster. If the slower locomotive it at the front of the train then the faster one will try to push the coaches off the track by "jack knifing" them, while if the sower locomotive is at the rear of the train then it will cause the coaches to "stringline" off the track on curves. By making the Ethel 25 unpowered these problems are avoided.

      @thebritfarmer Před 3 lety +1

I don't think the Ethels ran like that, they ran behind the locomotive.

25912 shouldn't have the middle lamp bracket or the headboard brackets at number 2 end. The prototype doesn't have them?

Its a good model, better than the previous, but I dont think it hits it out of the park... its just another average model, standards and expectations have grown substantially since 2017, imho the Hornby 50, now 20 years older, is still much better. I think both Bachmann’s future 25 and SLWs forthcoming one will relegate this one quite quickly.

    • @grootsan

In the last 3, 4, 5 minutes of the video where Jennifer turns around the D7661 in her hands it seems as if the blue paint has glossy spots in between on the sides of the body ie it is not a consistent surface. But that may be my imagination ............. As I said I am still very happy with my well sounding and looking Bachmann 25286 and I will happily wait for my SLW 25 !
