  • Dr. Diego Melgar is a seismologist that does research on large earthquakes. He wants to understand the hazards they produce which affect society, namely, strong shaking and tsunamis. He is also interested in early warning systems to issue alerts in advance of these hazards. To pursue these interests he observes and measures earthquakes, and creates models.
Title: Geophysical modeling meets paleoseismology: can we know the details of past Cascadia earthquakes

In other words, we don't know anything.

Very interesting. Although you didn’t specifically reference Dr. Brian Atwater’s work, It seems you are arriving at a conclusion that doubts it. But what theory or combination of quakes are you considering as more likely or that needs studied more?

Though you postulate there may have been multiple large earthquakes separated by years or decades during the 1700 event, I didn't pick up on any evidence in your discussion to support this other than modelling. Did I miss it? Is there any evidence? Though the 7 cedar dendrochronology has the least uncertainty, there's many more ghost forests up and down the coast. Is there any confident temporal separation in any of this data?

Masterful presentation and methods! The dinner sausage is (maybe, likely?) dead. Long live the breakfast link!

This contradicts Japanese written records, does it not?

Can any of your modelling predict whether the Bonneville landslide may have been triggered by the "B" earthquake event?

To you. To other rationale people it just makes sense.

Never bring sophomoric political remarks into a lecture, it discredits you and degrades your professionalism. No class at all.
