  • In the aftermath of the 2017 General Election, Stacey Dooley heads to Northern Ireland to find out exactly who supporters of the DUP are.
She meets people who voted for a party that is both anti-Gay marriage and anti-abortion even when some don't agree, and discovers that the place is still bitterly divided years after the troubles.
Her investigation plunges her into the bitter politics of Northern Ireland where British and Irish identities coexist with unease

I'm staying with my parents during UK lockdown, rather than at my own flat. My mum will nag me to tidy my room; she wouldn't do that at my flat. When you're under your parent(s)' roof, you act differently and, generally, by their rules. Her parents didn't want her going to concerts or the cinema, so she didn't. She tries to see why people voted DUP, then most DUP voters she interviews mention Sinn Fein more than the DUP themselves. That sums it all up really, most people I've met from NI, unionist or nationalist, they don't care about gay marriage one way or the other. Look at modern Ireland - a gay Prime Minister, full members of the EU, the first ever country to enact gay marriage in a referendum [despite going against the Catholic Church which still constitutionally holds power ...]
They've moved on and become a very respectable nation. [Whereas the UK is heading in the opposite direction]
It seems to me that Northern Ireland is caught in a time warp - stuck in the troubles of the 1970s.
It's time to break down the "peace walls" and give each other a cuddle. Like with the Berlin Wall in 1989.
      It's long overdue.

The one thing I recognise within the Catholic community is their resolve to progress, succeed and make their lives better. The Catholic Community as a whole portray themselves as a confident and well educated society focused on successful future. Whereas the Unionists seem to portray themselves as an uneducated, regressive, anxious and a vitriolic society especially towards Roman Catholics as is quite evident above. Unionists why not stay in school, acquire higher level education degrees and then you will understand that the U.K in general doesn't want you, we don't want you, we don't want to give you anymore of our tax money. 100% right mate. They’ve done more to damage Britain than anyone during the last 12 years, austerity doesn’t discriminate against religion, but it does again class.
In the end it’s not about religion. Terrorism never really is, it’s just a very convenient excuse for people. Like al-quieda/isis are dangerous terrorists. But most Muslims agree and are furious they were treated differently (mainly after 9/11 and 7/7), the IRA were terrorist but most Catholic people are against that sort of violence. I have grandparents of both religions, both have been discriminated against due to religion and both are peaceful, law abiding indidividuals and some of the nicest most loving people you will ever meet.
Terrorism, is terrorism plain and simple. It’s a convenient excuse to blame it on a religion. Any religion. There are bad people in all countries, in all nations, in every corner of life, but they shouldn’t use religion as a driver as it causes issues to innocent religious people who just wish to believe and worship. An I’m an atheist, so to me again as long as it isn’t put on me.
That poor young girl, I mean I’m not LGBT+ but I am a supporter an my best friend is etc as are many of my friends, colleagues etc. It’s not about religion, these people are born like it. Many religious people are LGBT themselves.
Live and let live, love and let love. As far as I’m concerned, as long as nobody is pushing their beliefs onto me I’m more than happy if they want to be an adult and still believe in Santa tbh!
