- Iron within! Iron without! The Iron Warriors from Warhammer 40,000 are a fan favourite and are a seriously fun army to both paint and collect. In this video we show you how to approach painting the Sons of Perturabo from beginning to end. We cover tons of great techniques, everything from using Contrast Paints over metal, how to paint their iconic hazard stripes and of course, because they are really, really evil, we show you how to paint their glowing red eyes.

It's really nice to see the brush being used listed along with the paints. Great job on the mini!
Thank you very much!
@@paulyg405 what do you mean? Have you seen some of the tatty old ones he uses haha you just need to be carefull. But I suppose it's the same for any tradesman he knows his tools
I haven't painted for almost a decade now, but I've got a small tip for people with the issue about steady hands and picking out small details: get a chair that allows you to sit very low next to your desk or painting table, so that you can really rest your arms and elbows on the table top.
Most of people's hand tremors come from muscle tension in the arms, so if you can relax as many muscles of your arms as you can, your hands will be much more steady and it'll be easier to pick out very small edges of the trim, or the eyes of the miniature.
Makes sense. If you have ever seen watch makers they have desks at basically armpit height.
It also helps to exhale as you paint. Holding your breath will make your hands shake more.
“We go in pursuit of the green skins, if we had struck sooner my commanders would have wasted more lives than necessary and perhaps yours would have been counted among them. The Iron Warriors will complete the purge, your warriors may rest you have played your part”
“That’s it then? You watch my brothers die and you leave without another word?”
“Yes, and here in lies the final lesson, you appear like stone ,Imperial Fist but you merely clad yourself in it, my legion and I, we are not only sheathed in iron. We ARE iron. Both without and within”
I love that talk down, it’s so cool.
Great painting tutorial
I know it would be a huge project but I would love a painting tutorial over at the academy for liberty prime from fallout wasteland warfare.
😲...imagine that
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA A deathclaw would also be cool, there's a lot more fine detail on this model than I thought there was, so I'm just waiting for a good tutorial haha, too intimidating otherwise
Embrace democracy or you will be eradicated.
A how to paint Liberty Prime needs to happpen and one for Smaug
No, embrace Communism. Paint Blood Angels!
I'm beyond burnt out on warhammer, but Duncan gives me life.
Can't wait for your Be'Lakor painting guide ^^
Us too now that our copy finally arrived 😀
It's small, but I love how you clarify what size brush you're using in the top left corner. Really helps with following along
I literally painted this exact same model a week ago, as iron warriors, now I wish I watched this
This is such a cool way to paint iron warriors! My mind was blown by using snakebite leather over the leadbelcher :o
Me too. I'm considering using that method on some traitor titans for Adeptus Titanicus.
Absolutely fantastic job as always! As someone who recently started painting Iron Warriors this video was extremely helpful because I’ve been struggling to get a trim color I’m happy with, can’t wait to try this method out for myself!
I've painted lots of iron warriors for my 30k force over a long period of time, I used an older method of 3 colouring layers and if I'd of known about this method I could of painted the same amount of minatures in less than half the time lol
Iron warriors! They will break under our siege, of this we have no doubt.
Smug Talarn noises
Or Hydra Cordatus.
One of the best tutorials you've done. The bronze really made the gold pop in the right way, as it shows 'less is more'.
I’ve been collecting chaos minis since the 80s and until now I’ve never felt confident enough to paint them. That snakebite leather over lead belcher technique is brill! 🙌
Might have to use this method to paint the trim on my Black Legion, just need to paint the panels with Black Templar too!
Gorgeous result from simple techniques. Love it!
As always a pleasure to sit and watch an artist at work - cheers Duncan.
Jo Duncan it's so epic that you didn't disappear. Now that you can use whatever paints, brushes and materials you want I would like to see you doing something with competing products in the contrast paints area. Just to see a difference and your opinion on the products.
And I love your way of painting Iron Warriors, has a nice look at the end.
Thank you Sakarajima616. 😊
love the heat blueing effect on the barrel! many thanks for that, you legend!!
Currently using some of these techniques to paint my imperial knight and it’s coming out great, thanks Duncan!
This is tempting me to start a third Iron Warriors army...
Thanks for this upload, I've been looking for a decent Iron Warriors painting vid for a while. This nails the asthetic perfectly.
No problem! Glad we could help.
Excellent as always Duncan! I can almost hear the barrels revving as he readies himself for another salvo!
Absolutely glorious
I was looking at the barrel right after you painted the casings and thought, "damn, it'd be awesome if he showed how to do heat distortion". I'm so glad you did. Looks amazing.
Fittingly, I started painting/collecting Iron Warriors after watching your GW video on speed painting them. Definitely going to use the method for doing the eyes to level up my painting
Great video as always. Really appreciate the quality and the detail you put in. Mini looked stunning.
I got goosebumps from this video, since my first army 17 years ago was the Iron Warriors. I remember the badass colourscheme of pure strong steel, and the worst aspects of metallic paints. You reminded me that Iron Warriors are still the most badass Space Marines in existance! :D
PLEASE do a Alpha legion painting class. Your so good at painting minis i desperatly need some advice for my snake bois
We have a full Alpha Legion tutorial on our website (duncanrhodes.com) 😊. That should get you going for sure
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA And really, isn't every marine mini you paint a potential Alpha Legion? :P
@@frostmagemarii Hydra Dominatus!
Using these contrast paints and regular paints over that metallic base was like mini painting 5D chess for me. I began to loath painting my chaos space marines due to the extremely lovely detail - but all that trim, this glaze method looked so good and so much more satisfying to paint
Awesome work as always Duncan
The figure looks great! I learned a lot from this tutorial.
amazing uses of contrast paints
Damn, love this. Really cool method to get grungy looking chaos marines!
Awesome little tutorial. Thank you, and I hope your site is rocking along nicely.
Plenty of great tips and tricks. It's really great !
I like the way you show how to paint. simpe, effective, beginner friendly, also quite skillful
Perfect video for my future iron warriors Project
Thank you very much Duncan !
this looks so incredible, well done ! And thank you !
This is some serious heresy...Dorn will hear about this!
Great tutorial, mate, fantastic content as usual 😄👍🏻
Even Valrak is here!
Time to give the heretics an imperial fisting
Bruh
didn't you score as perty on the which primarch are you test?
The best legion sends its regards. Iron Within! Iron Without!
Amazing paint job! thanks for sharing.
At first I was not convinced after the initial shade with contrast. But the end result is legit. Looks great!
Thanks Equos 😊
Excellent tutorial!!
Absolutely jaw dropping! I don't know how you can paint so well without sub assembly, I can't even paint the chest well with a boltgun in the way.
Iron Within!
Excellent tutorial, thanks.
our pleasure. Glad you liked it
Wow nice skill with painting shoulder pads lines without a template
love these videos
Just ordered some Mark III marines for an oldschool IW killteam. This video will come in handy
Best paint scheme for me!
It's very nice. Really fun to paint
I'd love a video going over a few ways to paint transitional lines for colour changing Alpha Legionaries or de-cloaking Tau Stealth Suits
Looks amazing Duncan! really makes me wanna paint up some iron warriors hehe!
very helpful, man! hope to see more of the ruinous powers in the future
A channel with only Duncan painting? Yes please!!!
LOVE THE VIDEO, AS ALWAYS :) I kind of wish I could have seen this video 20 years and 50.000 pts of Iron Warriors ago :P
These are great
9:35 : The Master's advice...:-). Glad to hear it....!!
beautiful
Very cool
Good stuff as always!
Appreciate that😊
I had a similar idea with Contrast paints over a metallic base, used on my Night Lords which I show in my latest video. Keep up the awesome work, my friend!
Plain and simple ❤️ what you do 👍 x
Great work bud, really enjoyed watching this
Glad you enjoyed it
Great stuff! Hoping to see you do a Night Lords tutorial as well some day
Never getting tired of Duncan saying "Two thin coats"!
Two Thin Coats 😁
Thank you , DRPA .
Woahhhh ! So nice 👍🏻
I would love to see how Duncan does white scars!
Oh perfect timing
Fantastic man! Can't wait to build up Mk3 Iron warriors and use this scheme for HH! Cheers!
Especially love the snakebite contrast effect!
Very cool. Great video as always. Think I'll borrow this glow effect for my Warcaster: Neo-Mechanika ISA army!
I'd love to see a speed painting series for things like Hormagaunts, Boyz, Imperial Stormtroopers; quick, Duncan-Rhodes-approved painting techniques for your rank-and-file troopers to get them out of the box, painted, and on the tabletop as quickly and efficiently as possible.
I’d love for you to do a video of the clansmen of Lamedon, their tartan is super tricky to paint but I bet you have the perfect recipe. Also the variags of Khand and those tricky suns on the banners
I have recently been experimenting with Contrast Paints, Basilocanum Grey included. I must say, I find it extremely amusing that when used as a wash over metallics, it leaves a much more grungy and oily finish than Nuln 'Oil'.
Thank you ❤🎉
That is one tough looking model. 👍
amazing job as always! You made me a much better painter.
For what it's worth, using the new Black Legion contrast paint makes freehand a lot more easy than Abaddon Black since it's a lot smoother naturally and more opaque than Black Templar. It wasn't released when this video came out but I think it's worth considering.
Now I want to paint some Iron Warriors. Damn you, Duncan!
Sorry lol 😂
I was looking at Iron Warriors and painting guides just last night, Duncan confirmed rogue psyker..
Love it
I'd really like to see your take on an alternative scheme from one of the chaos space marines, like hermetic or pre-heresy thousand sons, or the Flawless Host. Great job.
It's bonkers how easy you make this look. Do a full Deathwatch kill team!
Thank you S. Chen 😊
I’ve got a small Iron Warriors force already (the Start Collecting box). May have to grab some of the Havok ones because they look mighty awesome! Darn you inspiring me to add to my groaning pile (shelf) of shame!
gonna have to try the snakebite leather, seraphim serpia had terrible coverage for me, ended up using about 4 layers from the old iw gw tutorial
Great video as always Duncan. If you take wishlist or requests, I'd love to see your take on a Word Bearers Chaos Space Marine.
Man, big fan of the dark metallics here. May have steal them for use on my necron legions.
Iron within! Iron without! :)
thank you for your content sir,
Oh I wont start Iron Warriors but I will use that trim application für my Magaera Knights. Thank you!
Loyalist IW were the GOAT. Who didn't fall for the planted rebellion on Olympia and the disillusions of Perturabo's depressive mistakes. Who stayed true to Iron. There is little hope for the IVth in the present...but not 'no hope'.
That being said, A Minotaurs Tutorial to follow this would be excellent! (for obvious reasons c:
This is perfect for when I need to paint some 'totally not Alpha Legion'. The hazard stripes have always scared me off a bit though.
Looks fantastic Duncan. Don't suppose you'd fancy doing a Night Lords Raptor? I've got a method but i'm really interested to see how you'd do it!
Amazing looking scheme - I'm always torn between Iron Warriors, Word Bearers, or Black Legion...
Love your videos Duncan, always a pleasure watching you steady hands at work 😉 It would be cool tomter you tackle some more minis from other games 😊 Something like infinity by corvus belli or Marvel Crisis Protocol or something else entirely 😊
This seriously turned out amazing. I use too many shades/washes to get the same gritty effect you achieved on the armor. Might I suggest a streaking grime wash to complete the grimdark approach to the iron warriors 😉?
Iron Within! Now if waiting for you to do the Lord of Iron.
No, seriously, would love to see a Primarch painting series.
Supreme as allways, amazing video. Greetings from Cuba
Greeting Cuba 😀
Man, Basilicanum Grey over the Leadbelcher looks SOOO much more like I wanted for my Tau. I did the same process except using Black Templar, but it ended up black with a slightly shiny tint in certain light which is not what I wanted.
WOW! This is the best iron warriors tutorial that i have ever seen! You nailed it! :D
Could you do a Tzeentch or Slaves to Darkness tutorial? :D That would be insane! :D
Well this is mana from painting heaven. Pleased I held of a week on starting my Heresy Iron Warriors.
Hey duncan one day could you make a tutorial on 3ed tyranids? Like the ones on the cover I have always thought that scheme was badass with the black armor and white faces covered in blood
Never looked at Basilicanum Gray Contrast before. That effect is great for a base layer...looks like I have to change up some paint schemes here...
Its a great technique. Simple but pretty effective
