  • Roofs are like the stylish hats of a house, adding that perfect finishing touch to elevate its curb appeal. Now, the question arises: What's the best roof design for you, and how do you envision achieving the aesthetic balance of your home's facade?
We'll cover everything you need to know about designing your roof. We'll compare trusses versus rafters-essentially cutting and building everything related to the roof on site. Our goal is to ensure you understand what's required so that your roof meets your expectations. Starting with fundamental design considerations and exploring various roof types, we'll break down key aspects such as roof pitch, material costs, and labor challenges.
Have you considered how these factors might influence your vision for your home's roof? Additionally, what are your thoughts on integrating sustainable energy solutions into your roofing design?
If you have any experiences or insights on sustainable roofing, roof design, or guides, feel free to share them with us in the comment section.

I found the instructor to be very easy to follow and thorough in his descriptions.

Our build in 2024 will be rafters to maximize attic space.
We're also planning to use aeroseal. 👍

Another great reason to do rafters! Good luck with your project! Very exciting.😊

Doing a skillion/shed/mono slope 6/12 pitched roof with dimensional lumber for rafters on 24x24 cottage. The 3.5x16 32 foot I joist are 134$ vs 75$ for x2 2x12 16 feet and 8 foot 2x12. I was planning on putting a middle bent in timber frame in the center of 31'2" foot span. Got 70 psf snow loads. I want to leave rafters exposed so need to insulate outside of of sheeting. Half the floor space in in widow area for solar gain.

I have heard that certain jurisdictions in Canada do not allow an unvented attic to be built (by unvented I mean that all the insulation is on the attic floor and there are no eave, gable or ridge vents). However, in rural locations it is recommended that unvented attics be used because of the risk for wildfire embers possibly being blown into the attic.
Do you know if codes in Canada allow unvented attics (or maybe, which jurisdictions don't)?

To my knowledge, an attic space needs to be vented as part of the Canadian Building Code.

We work with our clients and the designs they bring us to give them the healthiest, most comfortable and efficient version of what they want. Making that space accessible changes envelope details and requires more energy to heat and cool the space too. At the end of the day it's their money and they ended up with a beautiful home!

All these black and white houses are going to look dated very quickly. Just blah.
