@@crawlbackOoo that seems like a cool idea. I do think there's still no shortage of current places though as he still hasn't done any Geography Now videos on territories such as Greenland or Puerto Rico or anything

Yep, there’s a bridge now. The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien bridge, named after the current Sultan’s late father. I’m not Bruneian, but I live in the Malaysian town next door and encounter them on a daily basis. Also, your Belait pronunciation sounds funny. ‘Bella-yeet’ haha.
Yeah I've looked into the history of a few border disputes because I was just curious why various countries disagree on their borders. A common claim seems to be "X British guy said it was ours on X date" with the other side saying "different British guy said it was ours on a different date".
I see all the British hate here and yes it is justified. Except, in this case as Sir james Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak was a chill and great dude. After he took the throne He was asked to join the common wealth which he declined and ruled Sarawak peacefully for his citizens (not so much for the rebels and pirates) and was loved by the locals.
Another fun fact, Brunei also used to be much bigger in the mid 19th century. They lost a lot of land to Sarawak (which was controlled by James and Charles Brooke, aka the White Rajahs) and Sabah (back then was called North Borneo), 2 states that eventually became part of Malaysia
The first rajah was given the land by the Sultanate of Brunei, as a thank-you gift, for helping fend off pirates on the coast, as well as fighting indigenous rebels on Sarawak.
Brunei had an uprising and white guy decided to help the brunians and successfully crush it. Brunei sultan back then say cool for helping us and make him the governor of Kuching or something along the lines. And he eventually created an independent kingdom of Sarawak. This was known as the white rajah period of Sarawak. I forgotten much about it because I did it to pass and not to learn. Regret not keeping the info.
One word: pirates. In a nutshell: white guy saves a sultanate from piracy and insurgency. Sultan gratified his work by giving him land. Said white guy then establishes his own rajahite state. Hence the only time where a white guy ruled over a state without backlash. Of course Malay historians don’t like portraying him as a better leader. In the federation he is vilified. Sarawakians counter the federal narrative by having Peninsular Malaysians show their passport upon entering their state while their people just needed to show their identity cards.
Also after James Brooke became the first Rajah, he decided to expand his region, fully continued by his son, Charles Brooke Bruneian Sultanate size originally from the near westernmost of Sarawak (except Kuching) and half of Sabah, but because of the conquest by Charles and British North Borneo Company, they only got what's left, which is their current form of the country
Please can we as a species just fix these stupid borders it would be the first step to world unity and would not only make maps look nicer but make travel more practical

Just in case anyone missed the caption of this video, this is outdated as Brunei has since built a bridge which connects the two sides directly.

The people who are angry need to cope lmao
No, hatred of anyone is not justified 🙄
Shut up it's not justified, before the british there was nothing
"Jalan Kuala Lurah Road" is redundant, jalan already means road, or walk depending on the context
I visited Brunei last September, and it was awesome! We crossed the bridge to the eastern part and had a Durian cake in a small café. 😅

Thanks for making this! I've always wondered why it's like that.

The sign that shows this is an old video is there is a direct bridge between the Mainland and the exclave now.
'why are these borders so weird?'
'let me guess, the British'
'it was the Bri... Huh, how did you guess that?'
Remember when Link from GMM nailed Brunei on accident?
