BioPro Modular Thumb Joint Replacement vs Traditional Surgery for Basal Thumb Arthritis

  • The BioPro Modular Thumb Implant is a two-piece implant designed to treat arthritis in the thumb (CMC) joint. Today, traditional surgical treatments involve removing the bone at the base of the thumb (trapezium), eliminating the thumb joint altogether. The BioPro Modular Thumb was designed to replace the joint, not remove it, providing patients with pain relief and faster recovery.

      Did you require additional testing/sizing requirements?

      @@debbieallen2650 I'm not sure what you mean actually. The surgeon evaluated the size of my bones during the procedure, and told me later that he had used the largest size available. 17mm I believe he said. It took 61 minutes, and healed fine. It does take quite some time to gain full use, as the bone must form a hard socket before you can use it. He said early on, picking up a magazine before it is healed could be enough to crush the spongy bone of the trapezium, so one hand only, for something like 2 months.

    I would like to see a video about how Dr.’s do revisions on failed implants, and have to revert back to traditional LRTI surgeries, after the fact.

    Just had this done just under three weeks ago. So far it's looking good. Gonna take time to heal before I push it too hard.

    I would like to see some patients that are 3- 5 years along with this procedure. Not the first time a novel idea has surfaced for surgeons only to revert back. Ill admit it looks great on the video. My CMC’s are both shot///// I’ve had 2 steroid injections in both dont know how many more I can get, and have a life where I need my thumbs

      Thank you for your comment. There is a published study reviewing patients at an average of 6 years post-op. You can view the entire study here: bioproimplants.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Pritchett-Habryl-Study-COR-2012.pdf

      I wasn't asked to be in any study, but mine was done I guess it must have been 9 or 10 years ago. I set off metal detectors, but absolutely no problems with my bio pro cmc joint implant.

    Left thumb being so important to guitar playing.... I'd like a solution where i can play without pain or compromises in my abilities. There isn't much (or any) longitudinal data to adequately evaluate this specific procedure; however, this surgery has my attention.

    If this is metal does that mean no MRI's in the future?

    • @BioProInc
      @BioProInc  Před 5 měsíci

      Currently the implant has not been tested for MRI safety, though we have other implants that have been conditionally cleared for MRI's.

    How long has this been around? i am on the verge of getting the old method of removing and using tendon to fill the gap. not in love with that and have stalled for a couple years.
    Any helpful insight would be greatly appreciated.

      I had the old method done, it failed and had to be done again. I’ll be honest most days I think the second failed as well. I need my left hand done and my surgeon thinks an implant would be a better option for me.

      Except those include an implanted plastic socket. With this the metal ball joint bears directly on the teapezium. However I have found this not to be a major problem because it is not a weight bearing joint.
