    My sister saw an orthopedic hand surgeon after seeing videos on this implant, he said oh no, no no those have a high fail rate! So, I would question the validity for somebody who is active and using the implant. This is obviously a bio pro video, patients need to understand and ask the question about why it’s not more widespread use at this point, and what the fail rate is.

    • @BioProInc
      @BioProInc Před 3 měsíci

      Unfortunately, most implants are grouped together and the surgeon made a generalized statement probably referring to other implant designs. In Europe, implants are widely used, but here most surgeons are trained in traditional techniques, removing the trapezium bone and leaving few to no bailout procedures. The published data on BioPro Modular Implant shows a success rate of 94%. You can review the study on PubMed here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3442003/

      @@BioProInc this assessment by a hand surgeon was specifically about the bio pro implant; does it not occur to you it’s very limited availability this many years out following development? I’d have to travel 200 miles to from DC area to York PA get access, my sister who lives in San Francisco would have to travel all the way to LA or Vegas🫤.

    • @BioProInc
      @BioProInc Před 3 měsíci

      @@Retiredtraveler1961 I understand the skepticism and yes, there are many areas of the country where unfortunately surgeons have yet to be open to implants. While the implant has been available for many years, it hasn’t been until recently that surgeons are truly open to learning about implants. In the United States, 95% of surgeries for CMC arthritis remove the trapezium bone, whereas in countries in Europe, 96% of surgeries choose joint replacement as the first option. This drastic difference is mainly related to how surgeons are trained and the procedures they are exposed to. The traditional method of removing the trapezium bone is considered the standard as it provides pain relief (no more bone-on-bone articulation) and low revision rates (very few revision options are available as the trapezium is removed). We believe patients deserve an option that preserves motion, maintains thumb height, and provides pain relief, which our study has shown. We hope in the near future, more surgeons will be open to the idea of joint replacement and offer it as an option. Every patient needs to do their own research and chose the procedure that best fits their needs. If you have any further questions, feel free to message us at info@bioproimplants.com.

    It seems that the major factor in this surgery being successful is the experience, expertise, and artistry of the surgeon. Making sure that the cut is at the proper angle and that the depth of the cup for the ball are paramount. I know how to go about finding a doctor using this implant, but how can I find out their success rate? I'm willing to travel further than the closest doctor available if it mean a statistically better outcome. Also, I am a industrial mechanic and I haven't seen any studies showing how the implant holds up under very heavy daily use. I have 10 years before retire and my job would definitely be putting the implant to the test.

      Did you require additional testing/sizing requirements?

      @@debbieallen2650 I'm not sure what you mean actually. The surgeon evaluated the size of my bones during the procedure, and told me later that he had used the largest size available. 17mm I believe he said. It took 61 minutes, and healed fine. It does take quite some time to gain full use, as the bone must form a hard socket before you can use it. He said early on, picking up a magazine before it is healed could be enough to crush the spongy bone of the trapezium, so one hand only, for something like 2 months.

    I need a Basal joint operation and I have been interested in BioProlnc operation as the answer all to all Basal joint operations. But now listening to you I need to rethink this better. If I go through any type of Basal joint operation I don't want to still be wearing braces or have any pain what so ever. I only problem that I see with this operation is that you have a metal stem and ball working in your Basal bone that has been formed as a socket for the metal ball. To me I see a big problem with the metal ball surely wearing out that bone. The Basal bone doesn't look big enough maybe, but if you could cut it in half and apply a metal socket that the ball can ride on. I'm going back to my drawing board a maybe pick some other method.

      You will need to go to the UK if you want to implant both sides. Not available yet in the US.

    • @BioProInc
      @BioProInc Před 8 měsíci

      That is correct, there currently are no total joint CMC implants available in the US. However, no implant is the answer for “all” basal joint operations. Our implant is the right solution for many patients but not all. Furthermore, no procedure, implant or not, will eliminate all pain or the need for braces in the future completely. There is simply too much variability in patient anatomy, compliance, and activity levels. The thumb joint is an extremely small and complex joint. While there are total joint replacements, issues with dislocation and loosening have been a concern in the US market in the past. The metal head of our implant can erode the trapezium if not sized properly. Similarly, the metal socket in a total joint can loosen and erode or dislocate. To ensure success with our implant we have a comprehensive training program for new surgeons and specialized instrumentation to ensure proper implant sizing.

      One of the great advantages is that you burn no bridge. A biopro implant could be revised to a different implant or even to standard LRTI but fortunately that is RARELY necessary. Once the trapezium is removed, that ship has sailed...

      Except those include an implanted plastic socket. With this the metal ball joint bears directly on the teapezium. However I have found this not to be a major problem because it is not a weight bearing joint.
