  • In this passage video I take my good friends to Avalon Bay on Catalina Island. They have never sailed before and they really wanted to do the passage to the island before they had to return home from their trip. Even though it was a very late start we departed for Avalon sure to arrive at night. This was a first but I regret not doing this a little sooner because now I know I can do it if I have to.
Join us for a sporty yet mellow passage to Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island, CA.
    ------
“Stoked” is a 1978 Catalina 30 sailboat that I got for $3500. See that story here: • EP 1 - How we got a $3...

The intrepid time travelers aboard S/V Stoked. Great stuff, as always!

    Great video brother.
In regards to the performance and shape of your headsail - you are correct in all of the assessments but one you didn’t mention is simply this:
Your beating into the wind. Best to use a working jib for that. You’ll get an even better angle but you usually have your jib sheets going through a fair lead well in board of your spreader arm standing if using the “working jib” rigging lines. Mine are on the deck not out on the sides of the cockpit.
I have the same thing going on onboard my Alberg 30
I’m half tempted to order a new furling head sail, and make it a 135.
Take my other one down and re shape and size it to be a furling working jib. Usually a 75-95%
That way when your beating up wind in a gnarly fight with 20 knots- you’ll have a jib that is smaller and able to pull in tighter. This allows my you to make a batter tack angle as well as keep a better shape.
We USUALLY have an idea of the wind situation before we set out and shove off. So starting with that working jib is best. And if it’s lighter wind than it’s still easy to take it down and run the bigger 135 up the furling slot.
It’s waaaaay harder to drop your big sail and put up the smaller one if it’s already windy. So just more convenient to start small and go big rather than the other way around.
Hope to see you out there soon. I’m always looking out for you around the islands. You and Keeldragger

Hey man, thanks for tip. I thought i did mention (in text) that we were beating into it but I may be wrong.
I reefed the main before we left because I knew it was blowing but I only have a Genoa, no working jib onboard at all.
I like your idea to get a new Genoa and cut the existing into a working jib but I feel like my Genny is still pretty young and crispy. Not new but has a lot of life left in it aside from the blue UV strip. That needs replacement for sure.
I have tracks just above my cabin windows on the cabin top, that’s likely what those are for, the working jib.
Definitely looking forward to seeing you out on the island for Captains Hour 🤙🏼

@@sailingsole yeah my jib right now is on its last legs.
Just an idea for when yours starts to feel old and wonky. I was on Catalina the entire second week of October. I’ll be back soon

Great trip. You had a little of everything on the way out and back. Reflecting back, I do not believe I have ever come into Avalon during any of my night passages.

I was a little freaked out a few miles out when it got super dark but there was enough ambient light and the moon came out by the time we made our approach.

@@sailingsole It's good to be a little nervous when you are coming into harbor at night. Keeps you on your toes.

I know you said your headsail is old but if you get a new one have a padded luff sewn in. I found it on previous boat to give a much better shape when furled. Get some advice from a sailmaker though.

I missed a lot of shots on this trip that I should’ve filmed.
We actually left so late that half of the boats that would’ve caused me any trouble we’re already gone. The boats next to me had left so I just backed up a little then forward through the empty moorings. 😜🤙🏼

recently became a big fan of your channel. I am an aspiring sailor and also a musician that played tons of show in LB. Dipiazza’s, Alex’s Bar, Que Sera…
I have a question! Do you score your own music on your channel? If only some of it is original which ones because I like the music and notice that a lot of channels score their own. Thank you - SV El Poquito - Redondo Beach.

Hey Capt, that’s rad because I played all those same bars back in the day.
No I don’t score it myself I get it from the CZcams library and from Artlist. I’m a drummer but I play guitar so someday I may put some of my tunes on my channel.
Thanks for watching and keep in touch! Cheers! 🤙🏼

Well Andy, stowage is overrated anyway. Ah the memories of Avalon moorings, we came in at night as well and definitely needed assistance. Looks like it wasn't too crowded, a good thing. Do they still have the water taxis?

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 8 měsíci

Ya we asked for an escort and assist but I didn’t need the assist. It was calm in the harbor and the breeze was straight behind us. Ya they still have the water taxi. 😂🤙🏼

Another great video! I have 2 questions looking towards a Catalina 30 in my future. 😁 I see forward facing mirrors on your Bimini. What are they for? Also, how tall are you? For reference inside the salon etc…thank you!

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 8 měsíci +1

Haha… great questions though. Those mirrors are so I can kickback in the cockpit when I’m sailing and look forward. I still get up and look forward but this gives me a little glimpse. I got the idea from Sam Holmes. @samholmessailing

hey i have a question, are you going to the boat auction this time? it's supposed to be happening on the 28th.
i was wanting to go, but some crap happened with my finances so i won't be able to make it unfortunately... but i would love to see what they have and what kind of prices they go for, like you showed last time

@@sailingsole woohoo! Thanks dude. I really wish I could go to look for myself, and maybe grab a beer with you or something, but I guess it will just have to wait. Maybe I'll be able to make it for the next one. I'm planning a trip to the Philippines in February and March, but im pretty sure I'll be back in the US before the one around spring
