The main rotor is spun up by a smaller motor called a pre-rotator. This gets the main rotor spinning at a RPM where it can generate lift. As the gyro lifts up, the pre-rotator is disengaged and rotor starts to slow down, so the pusher engine is given more throttle to get the gyro moving forward. This forward motion pushes the main rotor enough to replace the lost RPM and the gyro continues rising. Not all gyros can do this kind of zero-distance takeoff roll, but many can.
The designs have been improved with more actual wing area. They have been able to reduce the drag from the rotor and are now able to achieve much higher plane speeds as a result. Take a look, they look great and I am sure they may have a great affect on the aviation industry. People like me, probably never be able to fly in one.
The "ears" are full of lead or depleted uranium to add mass in order give the rotating blades enough energy for lift off. The weight also allows the blades to stay straight in high speed flight with low rotor rpm.
Now I visited the page of the manufacturer and understood that this is an autogyro, capable of transferring the driving force between the propeller and the rotor, allowing vertical takeoff Unlike a conventional autogyro. I want one of these!

What happened to development on this bird? Carter has been working on a derivative for Uber flight challenge but this one has great potential and should be brought to market for longer hauls.
