    Joshua, there are few things more important than this function, yet nobody till now has made it this easy to understand. Thank you, for taking the time to help us all help our friends into the hobby without the significant and lasting mental trauma of ....

    Oh my gosh! I spent so long trying to figure out how to do this earlier this summer because there was nothing very good out there explaining it. I even was considering making my own tutorial video about it to put on youtube after I finally figured out what to do. I have been doing it with friends that don't know how to fly and it is an absolute blast! I did NOT know about the global function option so I had just programmed it into each individual model. Thank you so much for making this!

    I love the way openTX deals with buddyboxing setup... I fly fixed wing mostly and for my son I have my buddy switch set to a 3 way switch, one is off, 2nd gives him control of the control surfaces and 3rd position sets it to full control... I also have it set so I can hit the sticks a bit to "guide" him when needed... the one thing I miss about my spektrum is the wireless buddybox setup... but that isn't difficult to pull off with the taranis, just wire in a PPM RX module to the buddy box cable and power it with an external lipo... a friend made one in a box that has a switch on the back so he can power it on or off... you can set it up to work with spektrum, frsky, flysky or anything else that has PPM output options... I've been meaning to do it but haven't gotten around to it still... also you may have mentioned it but I missed it... you can use whatever brand tx you want with the taranis as long as you have a cable adapter, in fact I have an old spektrum dx5 and dx4 that are missing the transmitter modules, they use the same mono 3.5mm plug and I use them from time to time.. can find them for $10-15 shipped in this condition and work well as a buddy box (or on a computer sim with a USB cable buddy adapter... not the same quality of feel as a good TX but still a lot better than the toys

    I've been using this for a while:
    1) There's no point in the override mode, addition mode is better. If trainer doesn't touch the sticks it's the same effect, while allowing you to add input to the student (I find this most useful for teaching coordinated turns, specially adding yaw).
    2) You can use this to teach someone on a sim for the fastest fpv fast track (I have a friend doing powerloops on a real quad from 0 experience after 2 1h sessions of student mode on liftoff)
    3) This works with the flysky radio that comes with the Wizard (You can build an adapter, search for firmware upgrade adapter it's the same, or use a universal usb simulator dongle without the usb end).
    4) With 2 qx7s, this works wireless over Bluetooth!
    5) The rf module can be on in the student radio so you can just be a safety net on their new quad.
    6) Use this for more than teaching someone new! Let your pilot friends try your quad on their own radio, have them experience crossfire or r9, teach them new tricks...

    I just did this with a pair of qx7s. I used the same trainer cord i used with spectrum radio. It doesnt show a icon on the qx7s but works fine.To get the dual rate and expo from master to slave to match i had to increase multiplier to 3.5 . Remove the prop or brace the plane when doing this. If you go the wrong way with the multiplier the throttle will excell when you hit the trainer switch. As always be prepaired for accidental throttle apply when live testing.

    Learning to fly FPV is a lot easier than learning LOS.
    Most time is needed just to learn how to move the controls from all viewpoints around the craft, especially when flying towards you. That's not an issue, if you always have the "pilots" view.
    If you teach your son how to fly, be prepared to learn from him in a couple of months 😉

  • @shawnzfpv
    @shawnzfpv Před 5 lety +1

    You might add that the Trainer / Master needs to be the TX that the craft is bound to. I do a bit of buddy-box and just have a model on my radio for the Student and we swap radios if we're buddy boxing their craft.

    Hey Josh, did you get him a good “toy grade” quad to learn to fly LOS? That”s what I did and it worked out great. An Eachine E011 is a fun starter quad. Then I bumped them up to a Latrax Alias which helped them with Acro LOS. Both of those quads don’t break easily so crashing is not a big issue. After that it the door to FPV is wide open. Plus they have the benefit of knowing how to fly LOS which can be invaluable. Good luck and remember, he just wants to have fun.

    I was actually just helping proofread a chapter for a textbook about automation in agriculture. Funnily enough, it was comparing the advantages and disadvantages of different wireless communication protocols between nodes and I thought, "Oh man, this is right up JB's alley".
    Anyway, the terminology for Master/Slave is kind of in flux now (and we wanted to avoid it since, ya know, agriculture). Several big companies are using Primary/Replica or Master/Replica. Primary/Secondary is a little too ambiguous since it's used in lots of other electronic documentation.

      In my opinion text books should use the most common term used, definitely when the term is actually descriptive of the situation and not some arbitrary convention. After all the goal is to teach something in an efficient manner as possible. In this case ppl will spend a few hours googling before they learn that they have been using the wrong term when thy want to trouble shoot or look up something specific.

In my case the channels during the slave cable connection from the Student to Instructor seems to be working however not 100%. The surfaces on the Wing only partially respond to input. I would say maybe 20% compared to a Non Slave scenario. Am I fighting a loosing battle since I have Xfire on the Instructors radio? Im not even sure if its a Crossfire problem or not. Question, can a student controller be setup to ONLY control throttle? Let them learn to hover while the instructor keeps the quad stationary. I have watched your video twice and it looks like the answer is yes. But I would like your confirmation, great master, before I buy another controller and try this. I learned to fly fixed wing with a buddy box, but I still managed to crash the plane. I believe the reason a buddy box is not used with quadcopters is because the instructor will not be able to react quick enough to divert a crash. However, a buddy box setup would be useful to teach one of the first fundamental skills, hovering.

    I set this up for my son a while ago and I’m only able to arm the quad BEFORE I connect the trainer cord to the instructor unit. This could be because I use SH for sticky arming or because the student Tx is a DX6i. Just a heads up for anyone that can’t arm with the wire connected.

    Most quads dont have the bind button accessible so what if...
    The quad belongs to the student, it is already bound to the student's radio.
    In this scenario the students requests the help of someone with more experience.
    is there a way the student's radio is the master and the instructor's radio is the slave ?
    This would avoid to have to bind to the instructor for the training, then bind again to the student (owner).

    By soldering a PPM receiver on your cable (ground&signal) and powering it with a Lipo or your Taranis, you could build a wireless Buddy box. Or you connect a Receiver (SBus) to the pins in the Module Bay (Ground/Power/SBus) and select SBus as Source somewhere in the Trainer menu...I don't know exactly but I googled and tried it some months ago an it worked. Oh and...don't try it, google the pinout first and check the voltage output, don't fry a 5V or 3.3V DSMX Receiver 😵

    Last year, I gave my 13 year old nephew a basic but complete FPV setup. Box goggles, a bind-n-fly 5" quad, a stack of my old 4S packs, a Taranis, a charger, and a backpack. They flew into town on Christmas Eve, so we gave him his present and sat him right down in front of the sim so we could go flying the next day. I had already set up trainer mode on our radios.
    I was relieved that I didn't have to take control. He did well enough in 30 minutes in the simulator. I didn't have to stop him from ramming into any cars in the parking lot!
    My biggest disappointment with trainer mode is that it feels backwards. If I'm the instructor, you're going to be flying my quad. That's not we want. The new pilot wants to fly their quad with their radio. They want to use their X-Lite to fly their FrSky quad. I don't want to have to save the day with their X-Lite, and they don't want to use my X9D+ as the student controller.
    Good luck with your son! The week our nephew spent here went very well as far as quads go. I was expecting a quad in a tree, or in traffic somewhere, or smashed into something expensive! :)

    Is there any way to setup a teacher on an unbound model? It seems the way this is designed means the trainer radio has to bind to the students model to be master with the control switch…Or, the trainer flies the students radio and vice versa

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Před 5 měsíci

      I don't think that's right. The trainer model is bound to the teacher. The student's inputs are only passed through to the model if the teacher's radio allows it.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Před 3 lety +1

      You can pretty much remap the channels any way you want but this exact method only works for the four main channels. To do a buddy box channel on an aux channel you can use the "Tr." inputs as a source to a mixer line. But you will need to manually set up the switch that changes control over from the instructor to the student of that makes sense.

    X-Lite has no trainer port.
