    According to Travel and Leisure magazine, the best city in the world right now you could visit is San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, followed by Charleston in the USA, followed by Chiang Mai in Thailand. These three places, however, don’t even get on the top 20 places to actually live, in this year’s Quality of Living Index, a yearly list compiled by HR firm, Mercer. Apparently, if you want to live the good life, you should move to Vienna, Austria, Zurich, Switzerland, or Auckland, New Zealand. The top twenty list doesn’t include any cities from the UK or the USA, two countries that have arguably been the two heavyweights in the last century regarding power and wealth. These two countries, however, contain cities that attract millions of overseas visitors every year. Today we are going to compare them, in this episode of the Infographics Show, New York City vs London.

    Haha I live in London, was walking through a council estate near brixton and some kid came up behind me on a bike pulled a knife out, tried to intimidate me and asked for my phone, regardless he ended up walking off without any of my belongings but still. Great city apart from kids who think they're gangsters with knives and guns.

    • @FATHOLLYWOODB123
      @FATHOLLYWOODB123 Před 5 lety +15

      You should see some of the new stations, Fulton Center, there's many more stations than the underground, so were slowly renovating them although at a slow pace 😭but seriously, some of these new stations, make london underground need to catch up! Fare is MUCH cheaper, and free wifi, no matter carrier or plan you have! But ofc, overall london underground is MUCH cleaner.

    • @dorthusiast
      @dorthusiast Před 4 lety +32

      @@FATHOLLYWOODB123 NY Subway has many more stations than London Underground, and that's why it's cheaper and slower, while London Underground doesn't have redundant stops and has ideal distance between stations and also covers the rest of the space with either London Overground, National Rail, London Tramlink or London Buses.
      For example, in New York Subway, a normal metro journey between Broadway Junction and Spring Street would take 33 minutes (15 stops in between), and walking the way would take 123 minutes, which means metro is approximately 4x faster than walking. However, a similar distance in London, between Tooting Broadway and London Bridge would take 20 minutes (11 stops in between) instead, in an almost same time taken to walking (126 mins), meaning its over 6x faster.

    • @jameschampken770
      @jameschampken770 Před 4 lety +13

      London Underground is much cleaner, safer, and has better staff willing to help people getting around. However like everything in London, minus Friday & Saturday nights, the Underground starts closing super early, around 12am-12:30am it all starts closing down. Unlike NYC that the subway is 24/7. Also Undergound is way more expensive then the NYC subway.

    London is for me the number one city to visit. Being from Copenhagen, London is only a 90 minutes flight away, and it’s airfare is cheap too. Staying there can be expensive, but if you like me don’t stay in your hotel that much and don’t require luxury, cheap decent centrally situated accommodation is available. From time to time I do stay at my uncle’s family (he’s from Tottenham) in Blackheath (approx 30 minutes from central London). I been to London 25+ times and I will keep on coming, as London has new things to experience!

    I live in London and have visited America multiple times including spending a month in New York. New York definitely has that filmic charm, but London is far more varied, open and interesting with a richer history - which is why I prefer it. In fact, I prefer European cities to American cities generally, because they're just older and more interesting. Where America excels is its natural wonders, which are truly spectactular. The people of America are generally very hospitable and driving around the country is pure magic.

    I'm always struck by how much good will there is between the two cities. Londoners tend to really like New York when we visit, and vice versa. Culture shock is minimal, and the (many) differences tend to thrill and delight rather than overwhelming or confusing. I think it must be harder for people from smaller, friendlier parts of the same country to adjust to the Big City than it is for someone from one Big City to adjust to the other.

    London = hot summers (some years can be inconsistent). Very humid hot / occasionally very hot heatwaves / droughts fairly common for London. London still has higher humidity than New York, so the temperatures feel hotter in London. London can be beautifully sunny at times during any season, although also unpredictable on occasions. Spring & autumn / fall can be hot some years.
    London has generally much warmer winters than New York. London has less than half the rainfall of New York in an average year. Snow is rare in London. New York is guaranteed heavy snowfall. It can even snow up to late spring in New York. Blizzards, freezing rain storms in New York's winters or early spring / late fall still likely.
    Weather in a short period of time is not the same as longer term climate. London is expected to eventually have a similar climate as Barcelona. Overall, London still has an arguably better climate than New York & especially so going forward.

    As a New Yorker living in London, I'd say that even after the novelty wears off, the politeness in England is rather nice. New Yorkers don't have time for that as we're more direct and in my opinion, honest. As someone who's used to being told to move when I'm stepping on someone's foot, it's a bit daunting to always pick up on the subtlety here as Brits are big on that. In both places I feel that I'm on my own in terms of outside interaction, but 9 times out of 10, starting a conversation with with a random stranger in either place has proved to be a positive experiences as people, when approached with genuine interest, are open to share at least a little about themselves. The food in London has been "meh" when compared to New York. Sure, there are some nice places here in London, but in my opinion, not as many nice, cheap ones as New York. If I could combine the two, I surely would. I'm in London, but my heart will always belong to the 93m green woman holding a torch. I miss my lady...

I also only live 5 miles from Trafalgar Square and on an old walk to work I passed about 10 world famous landmarks and accidentally walked into the premier of The Dark Knight Returns in Leicester Square once. I happened to do this again for the Hateful Eight one. Central is super compact but Greater London, which is what they used in this, is more suburban.

    London simply has more tourist attractions than New York. New York has Empire State, Chrysler building, Statue of Liberty/ellis Island, Times Square and Central Park. London has 10 times as many, for example London Eye, Big Ben/houses of parliament, Westminster Abbey, tower bridge, Covent Gardens, Hampton Court, Buckingham palace, Nelson's Column, Hyde park. I have not even begun to talk about museums. As a tourist destination, London beats New York. (I speak as someone who has visited both as a tourist in the last month)

    The thing you have to remember about London is it's hundreds of year older than American cities, it was designed when the only transport was a horse , so roads & buildings are all over the place, it slowly spread out from the centre but not in any set pattern like NYC for example, that's why it can be confusing to tourists..

      NYC is no slouch regarding history and landmarks though, especially among non-Eurasian cities. It tends to be more hidden and you need to read some books to appreciate its history. I recommend the AIA Guide to New York City for a detailed guide for the various important buildings throughout the city, as well as some detailed descriptions that provide some historical context. To someone from say Las Vegas or Orlando, NYC feels "old world" in comparison. 2024 will mark four centuries since the first European settlers came to found a tiny village that was not even half the size of the old City of London.

    • @rajathapa87
      @rajathapa87 Před rokem +1

      @@pannoni8449 Four centuries is baby years however. There are plenty of older and more impressive buildings in the the city of London than basically the entire USA, seeing as the country in its modern form barely existed a few hundred years ago.
