His tool of observation was the naked eye. In other words, his eyes showed him that the sun was diving as it disappeared, either into water that was cloudy because it was mixed with mud, or into warm water. What will your eyes see if you arrive, on your way to the west, at the edge of the ocean, if not what the eyes of Dhû-l-Qarnayn saw? The learned scholar Ibn Kathir, in his exegesis, says about this verse: "until he reached the sunset": "That is to say, he followed a path until he reached the extreme accessible part of the earth on the western side. As for reaching the place where the sun sets in the sky, that is impossible. Then he adds, explaining this part of the verse, "he saw that it was disappearing into a bubbling spring": This means that he saw the sun, according to his own vision, as setting in the ocean. This is the case of anyone who stops at the edge of a sea, he will see the sun setting there, while it does not leave the orbit in which it is fixed. I say that what Ibn Kathir and many other exegetes explain is what the Qur'anic term "finding" expresses: this term describes what the eyes of Dhu'l-Qarnayn have observed, and this can only be described correctly by using the description that followed. All the astronomers, philosophers and physicists of the world, if they stand at the seashore and observe the sunset, will only see what the Qur'an has mentioned, as the eyes of Dhu'l-Qarnayn have seen it. The question that ends the matter for all involved regardless of the 'where' aspect is: "Does the sun set?" That can also be expanded to the rising. Even scientists will still use the phrasing despite the answer being a clear 'no'. Regardless, the same hadith they are using can be seen as a spoke in the wheel of the arguments that reference it in that if the Sahaba regarded the verse as literal or were considering the same matter as reflected in it, the question of their knowledge of the matter would not have been answered in the way it was, as it would have been redundant. They also fail to have read very shortly after that verse where the sun is mentioned to rise on a people who have no shelter from it. For reference, this is Chaper 18 (Surat Al-Kahf) Verse 90, the translation of the meaning being: "until he reached the rising ˹point˺ of the sun. He found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no shelter from it." With the thoughtless qualm presented, it'd be surprising that there wasn't a finger pointed at this for the sun rising 'on' a people, which would be a similarly feeble attempt, but the reality is that it's likely because this is one of the standard attempts at a gotcha that have already been well refuted as opposed to something that they've actually come across or even seen the explanations of.

If you go to a coastline in England and observe the sun setting, you’ll observe and say that you found the sun set on the coastline. This doesn’t mean that the sun sets in that specific location, it’s your observation. The Quran and Sunnah affirms that the sun has motion and rises in the east and sets in the west. So I don’t know what their point is? Affirmation in the Hadith that the sun rises in the east but will rise from the west as a sign of the hour: “The Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the west. Or, in the other direction to find sun rising, which would suggest that he probably traveled during the night! He could also have traveled north or south and found the sunset and sunrise. Who knows? If this story was prompted due to Jews questions then it is appropriate to assume that the same obscurity would have characterised their version of the story too. It was no lesson in geography or movement of celestial bodies.

The Qur'anic verse attributes the image of the sunset in a "bubbling spring" to the word of Dhu'l-Qarnayn (the Man-with-two horns or Alexander) in connection with what he had observed. His tool of observation was the naked eye. In other words, his eyes showed him that the sun was diving as it disappeared, either into water that was cloudy because it was mixed with mud, or into warm water.
What will your eyes see if you arrive, on your way to the west, at the edge of the ocean, if not what the eyes of Dhû-l-Qarnayn saw? The learned scholar Ibn Kathir, in his exegesis, says about this verse: "until he reached the sunset": "That is to say, he followed a path until he reached the extreme accessible part of the earth on the western side.
As for reaching the place where the sun sets in the sky, that is impossible. Then he adds, explaining this part of the verse, "he saw that it was disappearing into a bubbling spring": This means that he saw the sun, according to his own vision, as setting in the ocean.
This is the case of anyone who stops at the edge of a sea, he will see the sun setting there, while it does not leave the orbit in which it is fixed. I say that what Ibn Kathir and many other exegetes explain is what the Qur'anic term "finding" expresses: this term describes what the eyes of Dhu'l-Qarnayn have observed, and this can only be described correctly by using the description that followed.
All the astronomers, philosophers and physicists of the world, if they stand at the seashore and observe the sunset, will only see what the Qur'an has mentioned, as the eyes of Dhu'l-Qarnayn have seen it. The account of what the eyes see of the planets, the sun and the moon, in ancient or modern times, always diverges from the way the scholars and thinkers talk about them. To conflate these two things is either idiocy or deception.

The question that ends the matter for all involved regardless of the 'where' aspect is:

That can also be expanded to the rising. Even scientists will still use the phrasing despite the answer being a clear 'no'. In much the same way, the manner of speaking/turn of phrase as presented is not particularly notable, and the Quran itself mentions the matter of the Sun and the Moon traveling in their own orbits in Chapter 21 (Surat Al-Anbya) Verse 33, the translation of the meaning being: "And He is the One Who created the day and the night, the sun and the moon-each travelling in an orbit." This makes it evident that the very surface pedantry does not reflect the reality of what they're attempting to poke at.
This is all leaving aside the tafsirs of the Quran that appreciate the meaning presented by the verse that was regarded.
Additionally, the expanded particulars of the hadith being used as leverage are a matter they have disregarded despite it being explored in scholarly context, something that includes the fact that it is a hadith transmitted with two chains of narration with differing statements, only one of which uses the wording being leveraged here. You can guess which one scholars regard over the other, but aspects of the why have actually been mentioned here in the veracity of isnad as a metric and the matters of content which also have a role in determining the validity of a hadith. Regardless, the same hadith they are using can be seen as a spoke in the wheel of the arguments that reference it in that if the Sahaba regarded the verse as literal or were considering the same matter as reflected in it, the question of their knowledge of the matter would not have been answered in the way it was, as it would have been redundant.
They also fail to have read very shortly after that verse where the sun is mentioned to rise on a people who have no shelter from it. He found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no shelter from it." With the thoughtless qualm presented, it'd be surprising that there wasn't a finger pointed at this for the sun rising 'on' a people, which would be a similarly feeble attempt, but the reality is that it's likely because this is one of the standard attempts at a gotcha that have already been well refuted as opposed to something that they've actually come across or even seen the explanations of.

In this story of ذوالقرنين there’re also two meanings of سببا: one refers to “means” (literally rope)” and the other “course”. Now, how much could one travel in antiquity before getting to sunset? Or, in the other direction to find sun rising, which would suggest that he probably traveled during the night! He could also have traveled north or south and found the sunset and sunrise. Who knows? If this story was prompted due to Jews questions then it is appropriate to assume that the same obscurity would have characterised their version of the story too. It was no lesson in geography or movement of celestial bodies.
