- Hand forging a special Cu Mai knife. We pre programmed the steel before forging it together which gave this blade some real cool figure. After forging we went through the normal processes involved to make a special knife. This is part 2 of the programming steel series where we install the karelian birch or curly birch handle material and a special nickel silver finger guard! I hope you enjoy the content as I am always mixing it up with new and fresh ideas as much as possible! If you have suggestions please comment below!

It came out beautiful! That handle material! Wow!
Thank you Denis!
Removing the crips line was worth it. The handle flows into the blade really nice. Great job man.
Thanks Erick! I like how small it is, it would be a good field knife
Cant get my eyes off that beautiful green caroline birch. Knife came out Awesome.👍👍🔥🔥
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Yes sir ! Yes indeed ! Those scales pop !!! Another job very well done.
Thanks Tim!
@@Aleeknives you’re quite welcome sir.
Love that u rounded handle, blade looks Amazing
Just get better and better. Love it. Absolutely beautiful 😍 ❤
Thank you Davin ! I appreciate that
Knife turned out AWESOME!!!
Very unusual for sure! Yeah, Karelian Birch is a very popular handle material in post-Soviet countries. I got a block of it myself, saving it for some special knife!
Love that birch man! Especially if it was stabilized as well as this one!
I saw your comment on one of random hands videos and wanted to see if you make videos, I'm glad I checked!
That's awesome I'm glad to have you over here! If you ever have questions feel free to ask
I love the handle how it bring out the color on the blade
Thanks Michael! I thought it worked out nicely!
Dang! That turned out NICE!!
Thank you Albert! Much appreciated!
Very very nice, I love the copper and the the black 1080. Most of all I love the rounded top of the blade, it sets it off realy well and the rounding of the handle accentuates that. Lovely work. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Andy
Thank you Andy! I appreciate that!
Another well built blade. Love your style
Thank you Daniel!
Wow! Such a pretty blade! Well done.
Thanks Bryan!
There are a lot of knifemakers on CZcams making some incredible knives but this one seriously stands out as unique and beautiful! Fantastic concept and awesome execution!
Thank you Phil! I really appreciate that! Have a super day! Cheers
Holly molly!!! Awesome work!!!

A work of art...
Thanks Craig!
Turned out super nice👍
Thank you!
It came out really nice! Congratulations👍👊😃
Thank you sir!
Beautiful work. Thanks for the tips. 👍
Your welcome! Thanks for watching the video!
That's a beauty! Nice work!
Thank you! I was proud of it!
That worked out well ,good work bro
Thank you! Working on some new ideas now!
Looks awesome brother
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Really nice job! Thanks
thank you!
Yea bro!!!!! Looks awesome
Thank you!
An awesome craftsman!
That came out lovely, the blue/green handle colour is very similar to copper verdigris and complements the blade nicely.
Just as a future idea, its quite easy to "program" letters, logo's, touchmark or similar into the steel to then be filled with copper. Perfect for special occasions or an artistic mark.
This is such a cool idea!
Yes! 🤙
Thank you
@@Aleeknives no problem always happy to share ideas. i don't often get to try them out myself. Im also thinking some file work on the spine may come out nicely. (if you can keep the copper in place)
that looks absolutely awesome, given me a head full of ideas and has to be one of the coolest knife builds I have seen on TouTube, yo should be well proud of that one, and as a beginner it gives something to aspire to
Thats cool Andy! I am glad you liked it! I have a head full of ideas also!
excellent knife!
Thank you
Glad I discovered your channel. I'm definitely going to try a couple of these techniques. Thanks for such great content and instructioal videos. Keep up the great work.
Incredible 👍
Thank you Francis!
Well done man! Gonna have to try this.
That blade design is a favorite of mine. But the design is over the top I love the internal beauty of that blade

Great meeting you at the office today Airin! You have gained some new fans. Beautiful work and video :)
Thanks! I am promoting a video that just launched!🤣😂 I am sitting in your parking lot still and cross posting a new video to all my other platforms! Cheers
Love it👍
Hello Airin, The color combinations are fine. It was a clean and pleasant job. Health to your hands 🙂👍🙌
Thank you!
Gorgeous
Thanks Don!

Welcome
It turned out beautifully. I love the blade and that handle material too. I like how you made the handle size look right with the size of the blade. As always, amazing work
Thanks Nate!
Wow! That is gorgeous!!! Fantastic work man!
Thank you Edmund! I really appreciate that!
Imagine the programing you could do to that core steel with a bridgeport.... Sky's the limit....well almost...
You read my mind!
Incredible piece I love the outcome!
Thank you!
Great Blade, good choice of materials to get everything working together IMO.
Thank you! I ha fun with it!
Looks good Airin. Yeah the lines wouldnt have looked well with the curveature of top of the handle. Massur birch aka curly / Karelian birch is some nice wood to work with. The biggest downside to it is all the gaps and inclusions can be a pain. But with it stabilised and dyed you bet some beautifull colours.
I put it right there with curly KOA on my list of top 10 best materials!
Sick love your videos
Thanks Max! I am glad your getting some enjoyment from my content! Glad to have you here!
🤙
You absolutely nailed it, mate!👊🏻
The decision to round out the handle facets was the right one. The handle itself is spectacular enough, but having angled facets wouldn’t have suited the smooth, sweeping lines of that gorgeous blade. The devil is in the detail, and this was executed perfectly, in my opinion.
You keep on churning out awesome stuff, Airin! Loving it!
🙏🏻✌🏻
Thanks Pete! What did you think of the edit?
@@Aleeknives
Personally, I really like watching the longer videos that show all the stages, that’s because I really enjoy the process, presentation and product. That is in no way to say I don’t enjoy the shorter, concise edits at all 👍🏻, they’re great, too!
I also appreciate that filming the stages of the build is time consuming, as is the editing. It takes hours, I can see that in the quality of the content, mate.
I’m here for the long run, brother. I just enjoy being some small part of what you’re doing! 👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻
Yours is my favourite channel 😎
PS: I’m going to the postbox on Tuesday!!!👍🏻
I have been in my analytics for weeks trying to figure out why I haven't had a video get picked up by the CZcams algorithm. It appears that I am loosing 40% of viewers in the first 30 seconds. I think that is where I need to focus! I am contemplating new ideas for the intro. I am thinking a short fast paced edit of the entire build with cool cinematic shots and then going back in detail
@@Aleeknives
Sounds reasonable, buddy. The numbers are a good indicator, but by no means completely reliable.
Although don’t discount that some ‘viewers’ are channel hoppers, going from channel to channel without any real purpose.
Your rocketing 🚀 subs are good news.
What are your total views looking like?
👍🏻
250k total currently. But now I am around 60-70k a month so that number is changing quick!
Another magnificent blade..hope you can make a fighter blade like 12" blade maybe..I'm really enjoyed watching your video..keep it up..👊😘
Definitely will do that! Thank you!
Turned out amazing Now I'm going to have to Try one
I think you should! I did a more in depth tutorial on a previous video
I really think that the handle that u did on this knife was perfect thanks for your video today can’t wait to see what you come up with next
Thank you Tony! My wife didn't like the green but I thought it was pretty cool! Glad you liked it! Cheers
Man that wood looks amazing 👏 good work man
🤜💥 💥 💥 🤛 thank you!
Super awesomeeee..Please do some sharp and strength test with that knive if possible..ty
It is already sold!
Absolutely awesome! Keep the videos coming! I'm going out to buy some Mothers compound now
Thank you Nate! I just went out and bought a new can yesterday
Spec tac ular!
🤜💥 💥 💥 💥 🤛
Spectacular! I love the blade and I love the birch handle. But personally, I would’ve chosen a more subdued handle material to higlight this gorgeous cu-mai pattern. I think the handle would really pop on a simple, no frills blade.
I see your point and I agree! Maybe a more classy Ironwood would have suited it better! Thanks for your honest feedback! It pushes me to hear constructive commentary from you guys!thank you!
It’s awesome I’m currently fighting the tang on a 16 inch bowie
What's the fight? I have probably been there! You saw tin the video here that I didn't have much of a tang to work with! I actually thought about welding all thread to it but decided to go with a small handle so that there wouldn't really be any forces exerted on the tang!
@@Aleeknives I didn’t make the tang ricasso junction as symmetrical as I would like but I think it will still work
Gotcha!
@@Aleeknives I put a 13 second video on my channel if you’d like to see it czcams.com/users/shorts7PZjJ5YxpHQ
Damn that looks awesome. I was on planes all day today so I just got to check it out. Great job man, I'll have some sheath pics to send you next week.
Awesome! Safe travels!
Sic blade!!! I like the way it turned out.I’d skin a moose with it!🔥⚒💪🏻
Oh for sure! And you wouldn't loos it in the gravel on the river Bank either! The handle will jump out at you!
I did skin a Moose before. It takes one neck of a sharp knife, a good sharpener is a must.
A work of art congratulations 👍🏻🔪, I have started making knives a few months back mostly stock removal with O1 tool steel, and am getting flawless mirror Crome finishes up to 2000 grit and polish, if I made a blade from all 1084 could I coffee stain all the blade black ? I use bog oak on my handles and the colour contrast would be nice as it polishes up like black marble, looking forward to the next upload
Thabk you! Yes 1084 will go jet black in the coffee!
How does the copper hold up over time, Aaron? Will it turn green as it oxidizes?
Another spectacular effort!
Yes copper with definitely form an oxide and depending on what it is exposed to will determine what color it turns. I force petina on copper with miracle gro and it causes it to turn cool blue green colors real similar to the color of the handle here!
I'd like to carry a knife like that. Do you sell any of the things you make
Stunning knife how much would you take for something like this .Davy
Thanks Dave! This one sold for $425
Here
Kaboom! 🤜💥 💥 💥 🤛
Damn fine looking knife. Do you have a site where you sell your knives?
No, If it isn't sold by the time the video is released I take them to my local gun shop and they have a case for me.
Beautiful work. Can I ask you what you use to make the black color on blade?
Absolutely! It is instant coffee. I sand to a high grit then submerge in instant coffee for 24 hours! Thanks for watching the video! Glad your here! Cheers
Thank you very much
It looking fantastic. What steel did you use for external layers??
Thank you 1084 is the outer layers
@@Aleeknives thank you!! Your work is awesome
Great handle selection and the bolster. For the 1084 steel, I believe from the color of it it hardened. How do you ensure the black if it doesn't wear off? I recently did my first hamone using 1084 and sanded with 0000 steel wool removing the black to reveal the shine of the hardness steel. Am I doing that wrong?
No your not doing it wrong. I did a different process where I polished the blade and then did a 24 hour instant coffee etch to achieve the black and it is extremely resilient!
@@Aleeknives so I could use instant coffee, on a knife made up of just 1084, would the hard or soft elements turn black?
There would be a slight variation of darkness due to the carbon migration
Nice combination of colors ! That is a very classy looking . Where are you getting the nickel/silver bar stock ? I am having a hard time finding any without astronomical shipping charges !
No joke! I hadn't bought any for the last year and I went shopping last night and was blown away at the prices! Jantzen wants $50 bucks for one 3/8 x 3/4 x 12 peice! Dude I will be moving to 416 stainless at those prices. That makes the guard as expensive as the blade steel! Sorry about the rant! I have used jantz regularly
@@Aleeknives Don't be sorry about ranting So far New Jersey Steel Baron still has the best shipping of metal. Got the Honduran Rosewood handle fitted yesterday and coming along great and got 16 more exotics in also. The Bocote has some amazing figure from bellforestproducts.com
Man NJSB is my absolute go to for blade steel! Those guys rock it! As far as exotics, I am so picky I only like to by one peice at a time that I can see pictures of before I buy it. I jave bought grab bags of wood and didn't have even 1 peice that was awesome! I only want the best if I am going to spend that much time on it! I haven't had time to check out that website yet! Maybe today😁
Hey, Aaron, how do you get your steel so jet black like that? I'm making some cu Mai blades very soon for my wife and myself and I want that dark black with a even level of chatoyance on it. I would really appreciate it of you did a video on it and I'm sure alot of others would as well. I have been looking for that specifically on youtube but I haven't really found anything on it. So you might get a ton of views if you did it
Great idea! I will definitely do that
This is a beautifull knife , the final result make me think about a budist artefact with "jade" handle and Legendary blade ... idk if you understand what i mean 😂
I do understand! I totally see it! Thank you for being here!
Silly Brilliant! Airin, Aaafreakinnn.... WOW! Green works well with Copper. Nice thinking and the Brownish-Orange in the Spaltting or bark inclusions... it’s like the tree was grown for that knife. Sorry dude I felt poetical a moment. But the knife is Mic. Drop stuff!
Can I get in touch with you via FB Message?
Thanks Brady! Hit me up bro! I am on Facebook and insta!
Airin Lee
What did you use to etch the blade and not affect the copper? I’m working on a cu mai 1095 blade right now and fighting the etch hard
I didn't etch it in ferric chloride at all! This was finished to a high grit sand paper and then into instant coffee for 24 hours. I love the coffee etch man!
I did a third video about a minute long that shows the coffee etch
Hey really nice is there a chance that you got this birch from an etsy shop named stabwoodstock? really reminds me of his stuff he is my go to stab wood source 😄
Totally did! I love his stuff and buy regularly!
Hey man, kind of off topic here, but I noticed you are not putting music credits in your description. Does that mean you are purchasing them or something?
Thanks.
Yes, I use epidemic sound for my paid music source videos. They have the best music service around!
you have to made Mexican machete meskit wood
I can do that!
Do you mean Karelian like the region shared by Finland and Russia?
Good question! When I bought it that was the name of the wood
@@Aleeknives en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karelia
airin you nailed it again brother awesome looking knife i need help with my handle shaping/design you have videos that may help me my handles are so geniric can i send you pics too get your thoughts? thanks mark email?
Sure thing Mark! Airinlee@swbell.net
I'm new to the channel - this knife turned out beautiful! Also, if you haven't tried his work yet, check out Mad Scientist Knife Scales on instagram. I get all of my stabilized wood from him now. Best I've ever worked with and incredibly beautiful.

Beautyfull but useless
? Why is it useless?
@@Aleeknives it is not full tang
