    As I understand it, the D6 is targeted at professional sports and news photographers and has features geared to transmitting images ASAP to news desks. If those features of the D6 gets your picture to the news desk 20 minutes before the competition, and you make the sale, then it is worth it for you. Pros won’t buy it because they dismiss mirrorless. They will buy it because at this point in time it helps them better make a living

    The D6 has a native ISO of 102400. Now do you understand what that means and its implications? It means that you can get shots with it that you can't with most other cameras. Because it has such noise free and clean images at high ISO settings, it sets you free creatively in low light. You can let ISO take care of itself and forget about it. Choose a nice fast shutter speed and you can take full creative control with the aperture rather than struggling with a slow shutter speed and a wide aperture and having to use VR type lenses. You can do as you please with it as simple as that. That is why it is built the way it is. That is why you can get wedding shots that you can't get with anything else. You can push mirrorless as much as you want but they can't get the job done in so many areas that the D6 can. Nikon to date with the Z series , have not produced a pro low light camera, you can't blame them, they are playing to the largest market segment and that is the 40+ Mpx market to establish their new system.

    This camera is not for me but it is not a failure that the CZcams gurus claim. It is just not for them either, none are pro sports photographers so dismiss it because it is expensive and does not have some of the features general and beginning photographer hobbyists would expect from $900 cameras.
    You will see more of these rugged cameras than mirrorless on the sidelines of major sporting event. The only mirrorless claimed to be a sports suitable camera, the a9 is not built or supported in the same class, does not have the connectivity and mostly it appeals to general hobbyists who want to do a little of everything but not needing to depend on it. Nikon will sell all they make, they did not intend to sell a lot because the needs of its target audience are pretty rare. And nothing else is designed to satisfy those requirements. For those who it was designed for, it is the best camera on the market. For the CZcams personalities who are not even pro photographers with deadlines, it is safe to say they have no clue what the needs are of those who much get the shoot in any conditions.

    I switched to the D6 (from the awesome D5) very early on and can tell you this was one of the most honest reviews I've seen (pro and con). You nailed it. The niche for D6 is small and we do know who we are. I shoot motorsports and can attest to the fact that "fast" is where it excels. Yes. It is heavy. Yes. It is loud. Neither of those things are considerations for me personally though I certainly see how they would be for some and perhaps most. This camera is not for "most" though. It is for "some." One thing you didn't mention is battery life. I shot ~15k images last weekend on 3 batteries - switching out daily even though the battery I was replacing still had juice in it. I am not sure mirrorless cameras have that great a battery life.

    The D6 is a low light monster to put it mildly! Many of us want that low light ability that this camera provides that mirrorless can't at this point in time. That is where reviews skewed to suit mirrorless fall down. Put the mirrorless into the world of the D6 shooter, try and get that poster sized print out of it at ISO 32000, have a look at what you get and then tell me you are happy with the alternative .................................. mirrorless have a long way to go, they are concentrating on consumer grade features Give me a 24 Mpx sensor in the mirrorless D6 body, until then i will stick with the camera that can get it all done and that is not mirrorless

    @techieguy336 Před 4 lety +1

    There are two features stopping pros from switching from the DSLR to the mirrorless camera en masse: mirrorless's poor battery life and the lack of an optical viewfinder. All SONY would have to do to corner the pro market would be to make their mirrorless cameras slightly larger and they'd solve the battery issue. Adding the optical viewfinder might take a little more time but it is doable. I think that a pro mirrorless is coming but not the current mirrorless we have today. When Canon and Nikon solve these two problems the DSLR will evolve into the perfect pro camera and if Sony doesn't watch out they'll be left behind again. Sony has had over a decade to perfect mirrorless. What's taking so long? The battery issue should have been conquered many years ago. It is simply a matter of battery size. Nikon haters always question why Nikon doesn't put more emphasis on improving video capabilities but no-one ever questions why Sony doesn't improve battery life. Nikon knows their customers aren't heavy into video but everyone would like a Sony camera with more battery life.

    Only now have I seen your video, three years later. In fact, the D6 is Nikon's final Pro DSLR model, a farewell product. And I'm into pro cameras D3s, D4s, D5 and so on. But the regular purchase prices are utopian for me as a passionate amateur photographer. I can and will only be able to afford it second hand. Therefore, the question of a mirrorless system does not arise for me when I have just put together my F-mount from used parts. For me it's not about chasing the latest technology, but rather about pure photography! It doesn't matter whether your fantastic photos were taken with D2xs or D6 or Z9. It's shocking to see how much money is spent! And the market is flooded with technical products that were wasted and no one wants them anymore. Does this make our world better?

    Coming from a F5 (used for 280 bucks) which has a fast AF and a very good metering system I switched to a D2xs. It was disappointing, as especially the sensor had not the dynamic range of film. After that I found a D3 which really brought back the F5 feel.
    After viewing your review and also some others, Steve Perry e. g. I came to the conclusion that the D6 is what suits my photography. Very fast AF and very good metering system, combined with WiFi and GPS is what sets it apart from the D5. I got myself a used D6 for a good price and also some nice lenses like the 24/1.4, 35/1.4 and 105/1.4.
    Those things become cheaper as mirrorless is more fashionable.
    Funny fact: B. Moose Peterson hailed the D6 - and hailed the Z9 even more.
