- Check out the Holland America food and menus at the Main Dining Room (MDR) for dinner from our 2022 cruise aboard the Nieuw Statendam. During our 7 day cruise, there were two formal nights and a Culinary Council dining event that featured numerous dishes with recipes from famous chefs like Rudi Sodaman & David Burke. We also give reviews and commentary on the various appetizers, main entrees and desserts ordered.

Again, I am a huge fan. So this is one of your best efforts. Well paced, well edited, you left in a few funny family moments, and you do such a great job of describing the various flavors. I have gotton a bit turned off by other sites who specialize in the pay for options. I kind of expect they would be great. Love it that you guys are the everyone cruise experience with an enlighten palate. I loke also how she takes things and combines ingredients on the plate that highlight the dish, and uses extra citrus. She is obviously a lovely woman, though not too much so as to distract with too much make up. Of all the cruise sites I like I rank you right with Ben and David and Emma as my favorites. Again, very well done!

🤔 You know on parent-teacher interview night, when you meet your kid's friends' parents for the first time, and there's always one lady who is genuinely kind and friendly with everyone? That's who this lovely lady reminds me of. Such a kind disposition. I enjoy the cruise buffet food videos from this couple's channel so much more than any other. This channel, as well as the couple that specializes in Disney ships and other venues.

@laurawgarts, did you go yet? Rotterdam, being the newest ship in that fleet, has very nice amenities, amazing range of art collections, excellent guest-to-employee ratios, and awesome decor in the Dining Rooms. It is a unique experience every evening on one of the lower decks with so many different musical performances and venues....which you can enjoy before and after your dinner and before and after the main showroom entertainments. I read that Holland America repositioned this ship around April last year to house Ukrainian refugees from Rotterdam, Holland, where its name originates. I kept thinking that those must have been the best treated refugees in the world last year!

I really like your videos, your mate seems to like every dish! So funny. So tell me, does Holland America have the best food amongst its peers? We sail mostly Princess but wanted a changed and have booked two Holland America cruises..
Thank you very much! 😊 She call them as she see (or in this case, taste) them actually 😁. Holland America has really good food quality & service. I would say probably the best combination of those two attributes of any other mainstream line. Did see some cutbacks but that's the way it is seems for all the lines lately. We haven't gone on Princess since 2018 but definitely would love to go back sooner than later, but have heard that their food quality has gone down.

Thank you! 😊 We have been almost 40 cruises now. Holland America does not require jackets for men at the MDR for formal nights- in fact none of the mainstream cruise lines do nowadays.

can't wait to go on Rotterdam over Christmas. We did one Hal, on Koningsdam, and found the food to be a tad better, 'fancier' choices than the usual Carnival/NCL/Royal. We like those too, but Hal and Celebrity are just a tad more upscale. Those two have lamb, the others either don't or maybe you'll see it once in a 7 nighter. I like getting lamb and beef. I don't think I ever get chicken b/c I just figure that's so easy to get anytime, and it's just a 'blank palette'. But lamb, seafood, and beef I'll typically get. Duck is good too. So that menu that had duck and also beef/lobster, I'd have agonized over that one...

I have found that overall Holland America has some of the best food qualities. Have found Carnival to have more general food items.

Which cruise company would you recommend in all aspects food, rooms, amenities and service?
We actually really like the main stream cruise lines- Carnival, Royal, NCL, HAL, Princess & Celebrity. They all have good service actually, and some ships have more bells & whistles than others. The ones that aren't as fancy often have better food, however. The newer ships are going to have better amenities & rooms.
Does HAL require jackets for men at dinner in the main dining room?
Nope- not even on formal nights.
Portion size has shrunk, what happened ? Why do we have to pay for upgrade entrees in the mdr ?
Cappuccino used to be included for free
Does Holland America have the cold fruit soups?

I didn't see a cheese plate on the menus you showed us. I hope to have them on my cruise instead of the decadent desserts!
They may have cut out the cheese plate in the newest menu. But if you ask the wait staff, I wouldn't be surprised if they will bring you one every dinner.

What was the dress code like for the formal evening - did people follow it?
As long as you don't wear shorts, t-shirt, hat or slippers you should be good. On formal nights you probably want to wear at least a collared shirt.
I loved seeing all of the food and her reactions and descriptions. I did not love the focusing issues - what camera do you use and why is focusing so bad?
Thank you! Yes the camera we used (Panasonic GX85) has a focus-drifting issue for videos. We've since started using a different camera that is better.

Is it true that even in the main dining rooms of cruise ships that one can ask for multiple dinners such as two steaks or other dishes to sample the complete menu? A friend told me that when he and his wife cruised, he would ask for two steaks, crab legs, etc.
A couple weeks ago on HAL four of us each ordered whatever we wanted. Then we ordered an entree (or two) for the middle of the table, so we could taste other offerings. BTW on the last evening my friend expressed to waiter that he missed creme brûlée not being offered on any night. He was promptly brought a beautiful, fresh one. Was told he could've asked for it any night he wanted it.
You sure can! Only limitation might be table space to put the dishes.
@@NYnative61 Thank you. And BTW, I am originally from LI. I've never been on a cruise before, mainly because I am single and don't want to have to pay the single supplement(s). In addition, I've avoided the hosted singles cruises because they strike me as groups of desperately lonely people.

Another friend who cruises regularly told me that in many cases, the steaks in the main dining room are the same and just as good as those served in the specialty steak houses and therefore, the specialty (extra cost) steak houses are not worth the upcharges. The dinning room looks nearly empty for dinner service wasn't the ship full?
We like to go right when it opens- that way it's not too busy and you get faster service. It does get very crowded an hour after it opens.
I am wondering if it's possible to ask for modifications for your dinner plate like doubling the sauce or vegetables. Of course, I would tip the waiter for the trouble!

Just said on HAL MS Eurodam and NO lobster night! That was a perk one looks forward to. You can however buy a lobster tail for like 30 bucks and it’s so small and you only get two or three bites out of it….
That sucks- thanks for the update! Seems like there may be supply-chain issues with lobsters. Hopefully HAL will re-instate it in the near future.
