Our Story Is One - 10 women martyrs of Shiraz tell their own story

is the name given to commemorations held around the globe to mark the 40th anniversary of the execution of 10 Iranian women in Shiraz. They had all been arrested on the same charge - membership in the Bahai faith, classified as a crime under the theocracy of Iran. Following months of imprisonment, interrogations and extreme pressure tactics to force them to recant their faith, including in some cases repeated occasions of physical torture, they were executed without the knowledge of their families. The prisoners were taken to a public square under cloak of night and hanged. Not simultaneously, but one by one to exert pressure on the successively dwindling number of survivors. The youngest, a schoolgirl aged 17, was kept for last and chose to place the noose around her own neck rather than gain her release from execution and prison by recanting her belief in Bahai principles such as gender equality, universal education, the oneness of humanity, and independent investigation of truth.
