  • Mega Man 4, 5, and 6 are interesting. They improve on Mega Man 1, 2, and 3 quite a bit. Mega Man was one of those NES games that you could always count on for consistent quality. But, Mega Man 4, 5, and 6 did bring about a problem, which is what I'd like to discuss here.

My first megaman game was 4. As fascinated i was with such game, I didn't beat it as a kid. Later, I played megaman 2 and I felt it inferior due to the improvements in graphics and gameplay i already experienced, missing the charged shot and the slide, complained that sound effects sounded lame in comparison with four, but i was marvelled by the music. Megaman 2 was also the first megaman I finished. My third megaman game was 3. I felt it more difficult than 2 or 4, specially because i didn't play difficult mode of 2, and i beat it using cheats. The music was still good, but I think it have less memorable tunes than the other two, or said otherwise, more themes i didn't like that much. Gameplay improved from 2 with the slide and introduction of Rush, but still missing charged shot. When I played megaman 5, it was more difficult than 3 because i was used to cheats and this time i had to play fair, so i didn't beat it, even with the buffed charged shot. I felt it improved over 4 in graphics, gameplay and sound, but it was like more of the same, so I started to grow tired of it. Later, as a teenager, got megaman 4 again and finally beat it, fair and square. Wasn't as difficult as I remembered, and enjoyed it SO MUCH this time. Then came the opportunity to play Megaman, a game that was so hard to get in Mexico in the early 90s, and when played it, it's obvious that you won't get the graphics or weapons from newer games, but it surprised me that it was not bad in any way. Was simple, fun, and had amazing music. By that time i had deep appreciation for Megaman 2, having finally beaten it in difficult mode, and I can say Megaman is even harder. The last one i played was Megaman 6, but i was already an adult, and I have mixed feelings for this one. The graphics are the best of the series, there are several amazing and memorable tunes, the gameplay mechanics of the adapters are amazing (I love Power Megaman), but i didn't like the robot masters, neither their weapons, and they nerfed the charged shot. The formula became old, and it was time for it to finish, and i'm glad they did it with 6. I replayed all 6 on the gamecube, finally beating 5, so i can finally say that while the classic megaman games are not perfect, they are amazing and love them all, as a child y would draw megaman with new weapons and whistle the tunes all the time.

I feel the video and logic is very inconsistent. For example you spend the entire video mostly praising the games as the best of the NES games and never really give any support to what the problem is. The biggest idea I got was that you didn't personally feel they did enough to change up the series but that really wasn't their goal. Is it possible binging the games is the real issue? Keep in mind these games were released a year apart and realistically in two weeks anyone who is going to manage to beat a NES megaman game will in that time. I'm just saying when they were released there were likely a lot of people who it had been 6+ months since they played a megaman game.
Similarly when you compare them to games you like all your examples are games that are around 20 years removed from NES megaman games. Megaman was created in what you could call the childhood of gaming. You could argue the atari 2600 was the first mass appeal home console which was released in late 1977. To a large degree it could be said the home console industry was only 10 years old when the first Megaman released. Comparing NES games to games released 20+ years later in a mature industry with lots of experience and knowledge about what makes a good game just isn't a great comparison.
I"m not trying to be hypercritical, but I think if you're going to title video the problem with blank game it should support that thesis rather than going mostly the opposite way.

I stated pretty bluntly that the problem isn't that they did nothing new, but that the Classic Mega Man formula on it's own is simply too basic to justify putting out "yet another one". I understand that's because the formula was created during the birth of modern gaming, but that excuse becomes my reason why I think 5 and 6 are a bit dull to play and talk about. I'm fine with games not changing much between entries, Classic Mega Man is just one of them that's too simple to not get repetitive after a while. And binging is definitely not the issue, I reviewed the Gunvolt games that way and never had complaints about the similarities between titles, because that formula just has more going on.

I do prefer MM1's more 'organic' boss rush; honestly Mega Man X1 did it best by spreading a few of them out in the first few levels and 'upping the tension' by putting the last 5 in the third Sigma level. The eerie, decrepit music there also adds to it too.

@@SonicSlicer I've been into Mega Man for a few years. As I said in the video, I don't take issue with games being too similar from entry to entry, the problem with Classic Mega Man is that I don't think it's a strong enough formula on it's own to justify 5 or 6 that much. I used 7 and 9 as examples for later Classic MM games I really enjoy, and that's simply because those ones are a lot more exciting than 5 and 6 (and even 4 to an extent). 7 was full of fun new content, and was the first Classic game to appear on new hardware. As for 9, it's one of the best platformers I've ever played. MMX and Zero just have much stronger formulas, so I don't mind if those don't change much, Classic MM has to go a bit further for me.

Rain flush clears the screen of weak enemies and pierces armor, Flash stopper can freeze enemies and make some are more vulnerable to the buster when time is stopped, Depending on Positioning Dust Crusher and Drill Bomb can have higher DPS than the Charge shot, Dive missle and Pharoh Shot can hit enemies above you and Skull barrier can keep small enemies, stage hazzards off of you and makes certain platforming sections safer.

They were a rare breed, but more sensible from what I can tell. At least note wasteful with money. Yeah, I think we'd have to look at the Gameboy games to see strictly bad Megaman games, and even then they eventually got better than the NES games, so it's kind of odd. 4 is perfect-adjacent but lack of soul. I mean there is no mood up, motivation to fight against wily, no remarkable story drops its overall score SO MUCH, because story is the key of the game even before the gameplay itself.
5... 5 is bad in terms of difficulty. There is no advantage of obtaining weapons most of the time because charged buster is OP. Even though it has an interesting story background, gameplay doesn't make story alive except for the final Dark Man stage. Some of the robot masters, themes, stages, weaknesses, wily sections, weapons are good but mostly they are bad, too. This game has no hype (like mega man 2) or sad (like mega man 10) mood which makes the player bored except itselfs fans. My rank on mega man 5 is the worst one even though it has a above-medium story, mostly due to difficulty and boring gameplay. As a final note, this game has really good control mechanism among the NES mega man games (still not perfect)
As to 6. I am really sorry. 6's translation in jp version is "the greatest battle of all time" sth like that. It is indeed. Themes are legendary, bosses are unique, story (and its unique ending) is wonderful, rm stages are doable with only buster without taking any damage, this means they are not bad. Final battle is so good that some people think mega man games should've ended there, it is the top part of the franchise. So can anything make this game not-best? Unfortunately, yes. This is the worst controls in play among the original series. Slide+jump kombo is very useful in mega man games but not in this game. And after you slide, you delay a few frames to walk which is sad. Other than those overdose of rush adaptor use in X and wily stages are trying to kill the game because there is no weapon switch.
    So my opinion: 6>4>>>5
(I didn't compare the sound effects because these three games mostly reused mega man 3's sound effects which I do not prefer over mega man 2's)

Mega Man games is something you DON'T play for the story. With that said, Mega Man shouldn't have a really stupid story either. Fellow Ruby-Spears character, Thundarr the Barbarian and his type of stories is good enough for the Blue Bomber.

The only real problems with these games were popularity/burnout and outdated hardware , and you can make a case for music, but these games are objectively better than the first 3
