#Level2Charger
I added an outlet to my garage, I had an electrician put in a subpanel for that and other power uses. Once installed the Chevy supplied charger showed a ground issue. I rechecked everything and it was fine. Turns out the level two adapter was not firmly seated in the charger housing. I removed and replaced it and all was well. Just an FYI for the Chevy charger users.
We got our black Redline euv on Superbowl Saturday. We've already been contacted by Q Merit and we're waiting for the bid. Chevy now only covers $250 for the permits. Thanks for the video, now I know what to expect.
Great information. I'd be interested too know at how many kW of power that level 2 charger provides to the Bolt EUV. If you could, please let us know the kW that shows on the screen behind the stearing wheel when the car is plugged in and the battery is below 1/2 full in order to get a full power reading. FYI - For my 2017 Bolt, to see the charging kW you have to turn the car on. Thanks again.
THANKS for the INFO

We recently took delivery of a Bolt EUV Premier. About 18 months ago we had solar panels installed to include the extra panels for charging a EV or RV. I was aware of GM offer to install the level 2 charge access. We decided instead to go with the local installer who charged less then what GM was offering. He tapped into the solar inverter, ran conduit along the garage door walls and added outlets on the walls.
That’s awesome!
I heard the GM charging install as a little scam ish.
As an alternative when I bought my bolt they gave me a $500 E V go charging credit
All new and very interesting information put in terms even grandmothers can understand!!
Very nice ride man ! I just got a 21 Model 3 and love it. I am looking to add another EV to the family and thought about considering a GM. Keep the vids coming! I watched Tesla vids for 3 years before taking the leap . And yes 50 amp charging is the way to go !
Thanks for the kind words, William! I appreciate you watching
If you're breaker box was already in your garage the install would be free. The only times where you have the allowances of coverage is if your breaker box is located in a "non standard" location. Which I believe is of you want/need the outlet installed more than 6-10ft from the breaker box. So if where you want your 240v outlet installed in near your breaker 100% free. If it's located away from where you plan on marking then expect to possibly pay some money out of pocket.
Non-standard location is standard in my area
The video was helpful in getting more information on this since I'm about to buy a EUV. But does this only work inside a garage? Because it would not work at my house with my detached garage. So was wondering if they are able to do an outdoor installation by my outdoor panel. Thanks.
It took me a week after submitting online for installation. Pretty easy process and took the installer a bi5 over 2 hrs. I have heard you can run into out of pocket if your breaker box does not have space or capacity.
personally range anxiety starting to kick in around 35% battery, 29% ill be seeking stations already, never gone dow below 19%, dont want to be "that guy stranded on the road w his EV"
I hear you. I’ve seen a few range test videos and they’re getting close to 233-5 miles
It’ll all depends of course
Thank you for your thorough review, it was very helpful! But just had a question…GM gave us the portable level 1/2 charger for our Lyriq and we are getting the 240V outlet installed. Can we use this portable charger as level 2? Or do we need to purchase another charger?? Thanks in advance.
Great video as always. I feel like going through GM for the charger installation results in a much, much, higher overall cost than just paying an electrician to install the outlet. Of course, the consumer isn't having to pay most of that if any, but still. Our breaker panel was on the opposite side of the house from the garage, and there were sections that had to pass through finished basement as well, then up and into the garage. It was a 50 amp circuit with 14-50 plug, and about a 40 foot run total. Total cost was $650 in 2019 for me with permits pulled too. I just about spit out my water when I saw the $1,400+ you were quoted. :-O
I ran my own 240v circuit and material costs was about $20
I was just quoted $1600 by my local electrician. Copper wire costs are up. Needs a 400 foot spool for me to go through the attic.
I'm in Southern California, but that sounds like a great price
Great vid, will you make a vid on the 2023 fed credit?
Great content, looking into getting one!
You should!
I’ve been waiting about one week out here in Southern California to get my call from an electrician. The Qmerit form was easy to fill out. Hopefully I’ll hear back from them sometime next week. The 30 mile charge every night is getting me by but I would love to “fill up” to full overnight just in case I have a busy driving day. So far the bolt has been a great car.
We have a great associate at Sunshine Chevrolet in Asheville. I loved the whole idea of going EV so when my wife loved the Silver Flare Metallic so we wrote the deposit for $1000. So now the reality, where do I plug it in at home. We do have the breaker box in the garage so it should be easier than yours but I’d like to be able to plug it in outside in the driveway so I’ll ask about that. Meanwhile you did answer some questions I had about just plugging it into a 120, doable but just takes a long time. So, thanks to your video, I still feel confident and optimistic that we made the right choice. I’ve been trading Hondas for almost 40 years. Between Accords, CRV’s and I’m trading in our FIT we’ve had at least a dozen so we’re switching brands as well but I’m excited about going EV with Chevy I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for all your work!
Excellent video, thank you! Have a question… the configuration of the 240volt outlet, was it 14-50R ?
GM specifies installation of a 14-50R receptacle. (Yes, I know receptacle is redundant following 14-50R.)
Chevy took care of pretty much everything for my install. I had to spend nothing on it. It's a nice incentive to buy one of the new 2022 Chevy EVs. And I totally agree. You have to get a Level 2 at home or owning an EV could be very bothersome (unless you have level 2 charging at work or something).
No doubt. Unfortunately, I ended up having to pay a chunk for mine, but it was still less than the price of a charger alone. So it's still a great incentive! Thanks for watching!
@@MetzTech how much did you pay
I make dozens of stops a day for work, and typically average about 35mph for driving (gets like 4.4 miles per kwh). I find the one pedal driving annoying, but usually can just use the regen paddle and hardly touch the brake pedal
Fallowing the Jeff question, also I'm very interesting to know the maximum power in kw and recommended fuse to use from manual. Charger have any kind of scalable power or amperage ? You touch the subject which many youtubers not cover.
How many amps was the circuit you installed it to on your electrical panel?
Do you use the chevy apps on your phone with the car any?
Just bought a 2022 Bolt EV and will get it tomorrow. Signed up to get the 240 outlet for my garage as well. Hopefully will get a call this week to set up the install. I want to get a 60 amp breaker and buy a 48 amp charger to take advantage of the 11 KW charging capability. We will see what my electrical panel can take!
Aye! Congrats, Michael!
That’s awesome
@@MetzTech Picked up the new 1LT Bolt EV today. I wish the EV came with the level 2 charger as well. I will have to purchase one. I will get a refund from the power company for the purchase. I hope our 240 plug install happens as quick as yours did. I submitted the questionnaire today. Excited to have an EV!
Yeah they definitely should’ve included the Dual level charger with the Bolt EV too… 100%
@@MetzTech I got my 240 V plug installed in my garage yesterday by GM. They installed a 50 amp breaker so I can charge at 40 amps (10 KW per hour). Purchased a Grizzl-e smart charger and installed it. Works great! Really happy with GM for paying for the install.
That’s awesome!
Having a Level 2 charger at home is the only way to go, it’s been great for me so far
Congrats, Michael
The first 2022 Bolt EV & EUVs only arrived in my area this week (technically 6/21 was the first arrival on lot for 50 miles) so the Chevy won't be spending a lot of money in this area since less than 10 qualifying cars are available in a 50 mile radius and the promotion ends 6/30.
That’s a bummer!! I really feel like GM should push the promotion back since inventory is so hard to come by
I live in Corydon, IN and I just got a 2022 Bolt EUV (Cherry Red Tintcoat)! So far, only driving it as far as Louisville, Clarksville, etc. Eventually, I will be making weekly trips to Michigan and back with a planned stop in Dayton, OH.
I followed your lead and got on the GM Home Charger program. Hoping to have the new circuit in the next week or two. Also, my local power company (Harrison REMC) is providing a JuiceBox (40A, I think) free in exchange for tracking my charging data for 3 years.
Ooo I love the Cherry Red 😮💨
That’s awesome, Kevin. I looked at getting a Juicebox before I knew about the dual level charger. But it’s a nice system, and you can’t beat the price of free.
Thanks for watching!
@@MetzTech Update - the Qmerit quote came in a $1500, due to travel time from the installer in Indy. So, I will be installing for myself at ~$350 and taking the $500 EV Go credits instead. If you hear from me tomorrow, it will mean that I did it right and didn't electrocute myself installing a 240V 50A NEMA 14-50 outlet!
Question for everyone who has a level 2 charger. Do any of y'all rent your house? If so I would like to know how asking your landlords to install a new outlet that you plug in your level 2 charger went. Or did yall ask for the whole power box?
right on man, still waiting on mine to come in, black EUV Premier maybe another few weeks or so. I currently own a Volt and I recently purchased a Grizzl-e level 2 charger for $650 but my province will reimburse $600 of it, so not bad for 50 bucks! Right now I bring my car to the local provincial museum and they have free level 2 charging there so I've been basically getting around free the last couple of months lol.
You are lucky. Ontario sucks for EV incentives.
I live in NY, I don’t have a garage neither the driveway, so I need to charge the car while parked on street, so problem with that is it has charging point on the far end on car towards the street and not the house
If it was impossible or too expensive to get a 220 circuit, I would want to add a dedicated 20 amp 120v circuit, turn up the charging amperage in the Bolt's mernu.
thanks for your videos. I'm going to turn in my leased forester to get a bolt euv!
That’s awesome! I did the same with my Crosstrek. I haven’t regretted it for a moment!
Thanks for watching, Benjamin!
@@MetzTech Hey so following up...I just got a new Hyundai Kona EV after selling my forester. I liked it better than the bolt EUV! So happy to have an EV finally.
I’d love to buy one of those “free” level two chargers for mu 2017 Bolt. Any chance Chevy is selling them?
Powder coating might get pricey to the point a brand new rim might cost as much, I would look into a rim design that you like that can fit your current tires. Also I would highly suggest ceramic tint, blocks out a lot of IR heat and is a lifesaver during the summer months
It can be for sure. I think I was quoted around $700, seems cheaper than 4 new rims. I am doing the ceramic tint! Looking forward to blocking out some of this heat right now...lol
@@MetzTech You'd be surprised how cheap rims can get. But those rims would look good in black or dark gray
Definitely. I’m thinking black. Probably gloss
Plasti dip is cheap
is their charger water/weather proof? I don't have a garage.
For DC Fast Charging, you can visit the Walmart in Clarksville if you don’t mind paying the tolls. A real head scratcher why Electricity America decided to put their only Kentuckiana station there. Glad you’re enjoying going electric. I know I’ve already bought my last gasoline car.
Yes I heard there was one there, it’s just a bit of a hike! I don’t get it either, Louisville is a decently sized city to not have hardly any DCFC…😒
Nice video! I just got my '23 Bolt EUV last week and I can't wait for QMerit to install my 240v outlet. Question>> Does it make a difference if I buy and use what the ChargePoint Home Flex has compare to Chevy's included charger in terms of how much kilowatt will the car receive? Your reply would be very appreciated!
I’d like to know the same thing. My EUV is coming in 2 weeks. I would like to know how many amps the Chevy charger is and how long it will take to charge my bolt EUV. How’s yours working?
How many amps does the level 2 charger deliver? 32 amps? If 32 amps, you need a 40 amp breaker. What size breaker was put in?
Hmm i just bought one of these, i have my own electrician with the project like 80 or 90% done and i just learned about these bonus... Any way i can have my own electrician finish this?
Check your local incentives. Where I live I can get a $500 rebate on a 11.5kw charger and another $500 to cover the 48 amp circuit for it. You may be able to end up with faster charging capability than the included charger
Will Chevy install a level2 charger on my house if I don't have an enclosed garage, only a carport or the side of my house? How long is the chord?
With the outlet installed, would you be able to have that in your garage, but run the cable under your garage door to charge your car in the driveway, or would the door mess up the cable? I don't have room in my garage for another car, so if I get an EV I'm gonna have to park it in the driveway. But I worry about getting a charge installed on the side of the house, scared someone will mess with it.
I guess it would depend on your garage door but I do that with mine so I’ll say yes!
I have it inside my garage but it’s more like a large shed, can’t fit even the bolt in there. But I run it underneath the door and it works perfectly! Thanks for watching, Tim!
Hopefully you’ve upgraded to a 48 amp hardwired evsc to you can take full advantage of the 11 kWh charger your euv can provide…
With a breaker box in the garage, 200 amp service, and about 3 ft. of 6 gauge wire...outlet installed myself for about $50.
Nice!
How many amps level 2 is drawing?
@@luktish A level 2 charger for most vehicles will be around 40-50 amps. Some are a little more or less depending on the vehicle.
How long did the process take from filling out the survey to install? I just got a bolt euv and did the survey with Qmerit. Thanks for your great informative content!
Took about 12 days. I filled out the survey on June 3 and they installed on the 15th
I filled it out on May 16. I’ve had to email the company several times just to keep the process going it seems. I’m in Canada. I guess I should send yet another email. It’s been almost a month and it’s starting to get annoying.
Dang, I’m sorry you have had a bad experience so far. Hopefully it gets moving soon
How long is the charging cable that comes with the bolt euv premier? I'm trying to decide where I would want the level 2 outlet installed to have multiple parking options.
thanks
It’s like 20ft or so. Pretty long!
What if you don't have a garage? Can you plug into an outdoor outlet? My driveway is about 40 ft from the outlet
The charger be plugged into a standard outlet using the 110V adapter. You will get much slower charging speeds though vs the 240V
What is "certification"?
I just was told that the Bolt EUV has a smaller trunk compared to the EV model! It takes around 7 times more on a 110 than a 220.
*Technically* yes it does. It allows for additional rear seat room. But it’s negligible IMO
@@MetzTech Well, I am a tech person!
What if I live in a rental apartment?
I have a 70+ year old home with a detached garage. I bet my install will be over $3,000 because I'll need a new subpanel. I think I'll get a quote from a local electrician first; for comparison.
Any word on if the 2023 will have faster DC charging capabilities? It's the one thing holding me back from buying an EUV.
It will not. Most likely the charging speed won’t change until a mid-cycle refresh, if at all. The upcoming Blazer EV will have faster charging speeds!
Faster DC charging is only important for those who do frequent road trips of several hundred miles or who have to work around not having easy access to L2 charging when parked for hours at home or work. The Bolt is not, and probably never will be, a good choice for that group. We have had a Bolt for over 3 years and have never used DC fast charging.
So what if you don't have a garage or you live some type of communal living situation. Do you get a rebate or free charging credit?
Yes you can get a $500 EV go credit
It looks like Chevy extended the charger installation as it is still going on. I don't see a date for it ending anymore either. Great thinking on Chevy's part.
They needed to extend it with how limited inventory has been. Plus they put out their informational video about the process the day the promotion was supposed to end 😅
@@MetzTech The charger promotion seems to be extended into the 2023 model year.
I already have a 220 Volt outlet in my gargae and the Bolt would be my choice of EV's, but my wife isn't sold on the idea. My only concern would be the range. We live in Ohio where we have cold weather and my wife;s cancer treatments are about 80 miles away. That means I have to be able to travel at least 160 miles even in the coldest months on a charge. I know I could stop along the way to recharge but that would be inconvient. I would want to go to her treatment and back home on a single "home" charge. But during the cold months when you need the heater, lights and maybe wipers going I don't know if that is possible. What do you think?
Yeah that’s a tough one, I think you would probably have to stop and charge for at least a bit. Especially since it requires more energy/battery to heat than cool. I would definitely recommend the higher trim with heated seats. Another pro is that certain Tesla superchargers are opening up to non-Tesla vehicles so if there was one near you that would save you some charge time.
Just got a quote from one of the Qmerit installer for $8375 to install a level 2 charger and panel upgrade. Crazy!
😳😳😳
That sounds insanely high. Even if you are moving from a fuse pane to a larger capacity breaker panel and 100 amp to 200 amp service...
Another installer wanted over $6000 for panel upgrade and one NEMA outlet for garage.
did anyone have to pay merit money down first?
If you don’t mind me asking, what do you do for Chevrolet?
I’m a videographer at a Chevy dealership
They installed the outlet upside down--the ground pin should be up so the GM L2 EVSE can hang down naturally.
No, the 1 foot cord of the EVSE should hang down so the EVSE can hang on screws in the wall and not put a mechanical load on the receptacle. The slots on the Bolt EVSE are arranged for that.
If you have an HOA and live in a condo this is a PITA!!! I have been jumping through hoops for nearly 2 weeks...
My breaker box doesn't have a spot for another 240V dedicated line. Can I just unplug my electric dryer and use that spot?
Sure, my buddy does that.
My question are...is there some sort of portable charger for at home charging for renters? Is there an exterior charger option for people who have a house, but no garage?
The dual voltage charger that comes with the Bolt EUV is rated for outdoor use. Your landlord may be willing to give you permission to add a 14-50 receptacle if the electrical panel has enough capacity for that. A 14-50 receptacle for EV charging is going to become an increasingly nice feature for future renters.
@@jimhenry4508 Thanks for the info.
I have questions about the permit process. I am not thrilled with the prospect of my local town coming and checking out my house. I don't want to end up getting hit with thousands in modifications to unrelated items just to save a few hundred on a plug install. can anyone please share experiences with the permit and inspection process? Thanks.
I just purchased a 2022 Bolt EUV and my bolt has the software update that only allows me to get 80% charge. I’m curious is yours is the same. It’s killing my long distance trips. Let alone I’m not able to meet the estimated EPA est of 247 miles. Even when I’m getting better than epa estimates of 4.6 kWh when epa says it gets 3.44
Yes mine has that currently. It’s the short term solution until the battery replacement. I’m curious how you got one without an upgraded battery?
Set higher target charge levels for both Home and Away locations as described on pp 95-97 of the Owner's Manual.
Qmerit came at me with an estimate of $1650 meaning I would need to pay $650 out of my pocket. I declined the estimate. My outlet needs to be literally next to my breaker panel in the garage. It couldn’t be any easier. Qmerit told me that was the one and only estimate I would receive. I tried to instead get the $500 public charging deal and was informed by the dealership that I couldn’t change it. Love the car but so far dealing with this has been a mess.
Geez that sounds like a TOTAL pain. I’m sorry you are having to deal with that.
Thank you. I am totally in love with the car though. It’s so much fun to drive. I haven’t even needed the level 2 charging yet anyway. I’m going to have a local contractor give me an estimate and I’ll let you know the difference between them and Qmerit if you’re interested to know. Thanks for your videos. I’ve watched them all.
@@smilinmikeusa Did you ever get an estimate from a local contractor ??
@@dougroberts3643 no sir. I’ve been in contact with Chevy and they have assured me that the dealer will send me the EVgo card but per usual I haven’t received it yet. My brother is an electrician and he is going to install the outlet for me. So no worries. Still love the car though. Don’t let my ordeal sway you from getting the Bolt or the Bolt EUV. The car is amazingly fun to drive.
How long is the cord from the charger to the car?
22 feet.
Depends how far you park the car from the charger. The dual level charge cord is 22 feet though.
My experience was not a good one with the so called free level 2 charger installation. Of course you are not getting a charger or the charger switch as they come with the car already, you are simply getting a 240 volt receptacle installation. The quote I got from the Qmerit referred electrician was $1565.00 for a 50 amp breaker about 25 foot of cable and a 50 amp receptacle. This along with the installation cost could be done for much less than the estimate mentioned above. I was told I would be responsible for the $565.00 that exceeded the $1000.00 credit from Chevrolet. I declined the estimate and got the complete installation materials and labor for less than $500.00 from a licensed electrician so go figure.
Do they allow for an exterior install?
That’s a great question. I’m not sure
Yes. Go to the QMerit website and you can read the details. I saw a note about taking photos of where the vehicle will be garaged, well if you don't have a garage, they'll install outside. In our case, it would be cheaper for the installer since our breaker panel is outside; but you'd really have to push for a high quality outdoor rated plug because those 14-50 plugs aren't known to last.
We purchased a 2022 Bolt but a month later we are still waiting for the charger as they are on back order. Not that big of a deal and like you I cannot imagine going back to a gasoline vehicle.
That’s a bummer! Hopefully it ships soon
I just bought a 2022 bolt and am currently going through this free install. Would I need to buy my own charger since the bolt didn't come with a level 2 charger?
Did you get an EV or an EUV?
@@MetzTech EV
Ah… then yes. Unless you want to wait till Chevy makes the dual-level charger available for purchase.
@@MetzTech Thanks for the reply. Good content!
Is this level 2 charger adjustable? As in amp adjustment
Not like the level 1. You can only really control how much of your battery charges. At least with Chevy’s charger
Shit, thanks man. I have 20 amp 240volt. If thats a 32 amp charger then i will just pop the breaker all the time.
I got 2023 Chevy Bold EUV and I got a Qmerit quote for $2266 and in that GM cover $1250 and I have to pay $1016. Ridiculous. Getting a quote from local electrician. It may be less than $1000.
Smart move.
Sounds good but, RON TONKEN Chevrolet dealership Portland, Oregon has ghosted me after buying a 2022 Bolt EV. I have tried repeatedly to get something going on the 240 installation promised by Chevrolet and all I get is being ghosted and pasted on to one department to another. This is total Bullshit.
I hate to hear that. Doesn’t sound like a good dealership at all
Mine keeps tripping. Installer less than stellar. I would think twice before using Qmerit. Expensive and my installer can't get it to work right and the 'don't care' attitude about doing it right. Not impressed for a master electrician. Put in the dryer 10.00 outlet and was clueless about the fire issues. Ordered the Hubbell. His kid put it in and OMG I noticed they didn't ground the 10.00 outlet to the electrical box. Pointed this out and said to make sure he grounded the Hubbell. Basic code. Tripped when starting remotely now. Noticed the kid nicked the wires when he attempted to torque it with a harbor freight torque wrench that was huge. The wire covering is coming off in places. Ripe for a fire. I'm so tired of managing this. Holding payment until it is fixed.
My electrician did it for $500 CDN I took the charge credit
That works too!
I wish the process was not so convoluted with the proceeds ha ing to change 3 hands. I get that it's an awesome courtesy, but it should be easier or I would have just taken a check for $1500 and called a local electrician myself.
True. Although its a lot of steps, I was very speedy. From the time the form was submitted to when the outlet was installed was under 2 weeks.
Very disappointed with Qmerit. I got one bid gor $3.5K which seemed really high and have gotten no 2nd bids despite reaching out to Qmerit many times. BTW, there are constraints if your house has only 100A coming and and not 200A.
Is anyone from Canada? Our garage is detached here.
That's a pretty little headband you have there "PRINCESS".
You good, bro?
It's not FREE I received a quotation is CAD$3500, minus the rebate I need to pay around CAD$2000, I think your video trap me to buy the EUV bolt 2023.
It all depends on complexity. Sorry to hear your experience wasn’t great
