Spraying Peach Trees - Family Plot

  • Retired Extension Agent Mike Dennison shows how to spray a peach tree. Before you spray, read the label and follow the safety guidelines on it. Wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt, and rubber gloves. It is likely the spray will drift onto you so the protective gear is important. The tree Mike is spraying is about 8 feet tall and 8 feet in diameter so he needs between half a gallon and a gallon of spray. The tree he is spraying still has some blooms, so he will not be spraying an insecticide on this application. He will be spraying a fungicide to try to control brown rot. Mike uses a fan nozzle on his sprayer. He sprays the top and bottom of the leaves along with the limbs and trunk. Spray almost to the point of runoff. Because the tree was pruned to an open center it is easy to spray.

    Thank you this is just what I needed to see. When I purchased my property there were several peach trees that had been neglected some even had kudzu that had grown up through them but I knew they were alive and I could get them back in shape and I did. The problem is, I could never get a good fruit from them. Most of the peaches it seemed like had some sort of insect damage on them or they just didn't grow and develop well. I knew I had pruned, I knew I had fertilized so I went to speak to a peach orchard owner to see if he could help me to figure out what I was doing wrong. He asked if I was spraying them. I said no I wanted to grow them organically. He then said you're not even hitting them with a little bit of sulfur? I told him no. Then he just said well the best of luck with that.

      What he is doing is recommended by Cooperative Extension Services in many states. With peaches in humid areas you need to spray a fungicide every 7-14 days all through the growing season.

    I have a peach tree that my daddy planted years ago and it has never been pruned that I know of. Three years ago I got about 10/5 gallon buckets of peaches off of it. The last few years my peaches have had worms in them plus a clear thick jelly type stuff on them. What kind of fertilizer, pesticide ect. do I need to use and since it is an old tree how do I need to prune it? I also have some younger peach trees that I need the same kind of help with.

    • @FamilyPlotGarden
      @FamilyPlotGarden  Před 2 lety +3

      The gooey oozing is caused by the oriental fruit moth. It can be controlled with the same spray schedule Mike outlines in the video below.
      We have a couple videos that would help you out:
      Insects, diseases, and what to spray and when: czcams.com/video/iRu2kApNg0A/video.html
      Pruning: czcams.com/video/x67sXjvpA9M/video.html
      Also, I would suggest contacting your local Extension Service. They will have publications and can give you advice about peaches in your area and can make recommendations specific to where you live.
      Hope you have many more years of good peaches off that tree!

      Other states have similar guides customized to their climates.

      Yes. Fill the sprayer about half way. Then, add the chemicals and detergent. Then fill it up the rest of the way. While doing the second fill you can rinse your measuring device into the tank. It will keep the chemicals from going down the drain. Remember to shake it one you put on the lid.

      Thankfully we don't have to spray the whole orchard by hand, that would be a lot of work. We actually shot this demonstration at Jones Orchard in Millington, TN. They were kind enough to let us spray one of their trees. They spray the whole orchard with their commercial spraying systems.

    Years ago my next door neighbor had some bigass banana trees growing on 3 sides of his backyard. He never tended to them and they got about 4ft around at the bottom pushing on the wood fence we shared. My brother who was a die in the wool Round Up man suggested I just spray em when he wasn't around. So I did ( you always listen to your to your older brother). About a week later just the edge of the leaves had turned brown. Time to get serious. Made a run to the feed store and picked up a syringe and needle for doctoring horses. Filled er up right outa the bottle and gave all 8 trees a shot about 4ft from the bottom. A week went by and they just started to sag, I went on a weeks vacation. When I came back those trees looked like they had been dead for 10 years! Moved 5 years later and not a word spoken!!!

      This is why you don't use an insecticide while the plant is in bloom. Fungicide only. Once the petals have dropped the bees won't come to the tree. That is when you add the insecticide to the mix to stop Plum curculio, the insect that is the worm in your peach.
