  • In this video we go explore the Southern Pacific Railway or "The Impossible Railroad", an abandoned Railway in California! We want to see the 100-year-old Trestle Bridge in the Goat Canyon and Carrizo Gorge! Merlins old school garage brings his Model T. Will our vintage speeder/Go Kart make it?
We'll see you next time! Thanks for watching!

That Railway should be Restored and brought back.

Never will, the bridges are not up to standard and will have to be completely rebuilt, and same for all the tunnels. If a line were needed, it would be much easier to follow a similar route to the nearby 8 and would likely be much cheaper.

I-8 goes over 3 mountain passes there too steep of grades for rail.

Financially, it always lost money. Even in its heyday. Southern Pacific wanted the route to be officially abandoned. Washington denied abandoning the line and mandated that Southern Pacific repair it. Two tunnels and two bridges had burnt and 'repair' required abandoning one of the tunnels and rerouting that section. $Cha-ching.
Passenger service (to Yuma) have been killed off around 1950 (from lack of riders). Circa 1975 most people living in San Diego were oblivious that the line existed and that it had a section that traversed the gorge. Stories from old timers who had ridden the passenger trains (all steam powered, those tunnels had to be fun) surfaced and public support for a tourist/sightseer (up and back) train in the gorge got traction.
Although they got the line back into a usable state Southern Pacific refused to offer the tourist train. It's owned these days by the Metropolitan Transit District (San Diego) purchased from Southern Pacific in 1979.

I hiked along the tracks from the south a couple months ago. We started from Carrizo Gorge road off the 8 and hiked to the trestle. There were no bolders on the tracks. I wish we had a ride. That looks like a lot of fun 😊

I want to build one of those but make it so with seats a roof and a Crane attachment to lift rock off the tracks and I could have a tool box and everything I need to clear the tracks and do emergency repairs and a cooler for water and food

Entertaining video, guys! Kind of shocked to see the disrepair out there on the tracks with the fallen boulders and stuff like that. Looks like the railway is truly abandoned once again. Was kind of confused watching the video about which direction you were traveling on the tracks. I saw you by the water tower, but did you start there or end up there? The reason I’m asking is because I’ve always wanted to hike to the trestle from the water tower end of the line. But I had heard that one of the first tunnels you come to when going that direction had a major collapse at its entrance several years ago ago. Was wondering if that collapse had been cleared. I know people were climbing over the collapse and then making their way through the tunnel, but I was wondering if the rocks were still there at its entrance. I hiked to the trestle about 10 years ago or something like that from the De Anza end. Awesome hike. All the tunnels were open back then. Truly spectacular event that one will never forget! Keep up the good work on your videos! 👍

I’ve seen another explorer actually clamber all the way down to those old reefer cars, and yes, they do have old coors beer bottles, the classic steel ones I think.

It seems you guys need a few heavy duty brooms to clear crossing and sand on the rails. It looks like fun, but damn hot fun.

A "framework" consisting of a horizontal beam supported by two pairs of sloping legs, used in pairs to support a flat surface such as a tabletop.
