  • I was waiting for a generational leap in gaming laptops featuring 24 CPU cores with 13th gen intel processors along with the new 40 series Nvidia GPUs. What better way to experience them together than in a Legion device? I was in for quite a surprise as I started to get to know more about the 2023 8th generation Legion flagship 7 series. And this time, Lenovo even added a "pro" mark to it so I was really riding high on expectations. In Isolation, the newer model might seem like a decent deal to experience the latest and greatest but I wanted to compare it to the previous 7th generation to showcase to you all that THIS time around, making an upgrade is not as straight forward anymore. The following are the specs of the Gen 8 I have up on screen for reference:

      Hi angelanguiano4338, sorry about the late reply! were you able to take a decision yet? Did you check my recent review of the AW X16? - I think it is an excellent alternative to the Razer at the moment. AWESOME thermals; though screen is not as bright as the legion; but is more color accurate. 0.73 inches and can go all the way 175Ws TGP. You can spec it to the 4090 and it will also be a little cheaper to the Razer. Though beware, the Razer Synapse equivalent, Alienware Command Center is an absolute dog egg! HOWEVER, it is still beastly and yet thin. :) If it is okay with you, do let me know if you have already gotten a device for yourself and which one it is :)

      @kazmiee  Před 9 měsíci

      Thank you Romznh! Personally I love the Legion 7 gen 7. And I think the Radeon 6850M should be awesome and offer better performance over the 4060. For 4K video edit, especially if you are working with a lot of footage, physical RAM will become very important. For 3D graphical design, yes, the VRAM can be useful for high res textures. Generally for a gaming standpoint as well, modern games are demanding more VRAM as well. All of that considered though, specifically for Adobe applications, Nvidia and Intel seem to have a better handshake with those. They will offer faster render times for sure. If you are very specific about time saved there, Intel and Nvidia will be a safe move forward. But the Legion 7 gen 7 I think is an awesome machine overall.

    • @kazmiee
      @kazmiee  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Considering how well Legion 7 gen 7s are built, the ryzen radeon combo I think will continue to stay relevant for a few years even with a 6700M. It also gives you 10 gigs of VRAM which can help with future texture sizes and is also 160 bits compared to 128 bits from slightly pricier 4060s. AMD is doing well to constantly push out driver updates as well. My only concern is that pace of change has become quite rapid lately but I think this hardware should still be able to cope with games coming out in a year or so. You have to rememver 6700 is a very mid level GPU so dont expect miracles. But value for money, I think nothing comes closer

    Some reviews say amd advantage version of the legion 7 gen 7 has a lot of issues like screen randomly going black, gpu does not use over 100w and drivers are not optimized. Have you faced such problems? Would really appreciate your feedback, thank you.

    • @kazmiee
      @kazmiee  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thank you for your question and it is a valid one. I remember that when I had initially gotten my device, there were actually quite a few issues that were all driver related. One driver might give me better performance but would result in crashes and others would reduce performance but games would run without error. Sometimes when driver updates came out it would break stability again. I remember that at that time I got uncharted and that game would crash every time at the same spot and then I downgraded drivers and things returned to normal. So this sort of constant need to manage drivers stayed for about 3-6 months but eventually things smoothened out perfectly. My device runs quite well now and I am very very happy with it. The good thing is that even during the initial months, there were alot of driver updates so AMD kept trying to fix issues and now is in a really good spot. I only regret not getting the 6850M since I had gotten the 6700M. Regardless, it is a damn good device that can still run everything. I was surprised how good and how smooth Starfield was on it! So yeah, if you are comfortable around pcs, amd would present no issue to you BUT.. if you're new to pc gaming for example, unfortunately id recommend to stick to intel / Nvidia. Hope that helps!

    Greetings, Technic-Ali. I know that this is a bit of an older video, but I think it is still relevant for users of this laptop. I have the 6800H 6700M model running Windows 10 and it performs great aside from some sleep bugs overall. I have seen some people say that the 6800M is much better than the 6700M, and while it is true for the MSI Delta version, the Legion 7 6700M seems to be only several percent behind the Asus 6800M in benchmarks. One more thing I noticed that other people have not is that the Lenovo runs on PCIe 4.0 x8 instead of PCIe 3.0 x8 the Asus and other Ryzen 5000 series use, and this can really help should the game require a lot of asset & texture streaming like Spider-Man. Finally, the 10GB VRAM buffer may help it moderately even at 1080p and hold its ground versus the 4060/4070 from Nvidia. TDLR: The 6700M got a mediocre reputation that I feel is unwarranted because of the gimped MSI Delta 100-115w GPU. Good review overall of both machines, especially the 2022 model.

      Thank you Ice Blade! And am glad that you brought this back up. At the start driver issues kept watering down the performance of the 6700M but now I think it is doing anazing. It is still very capable of running all the latest titles. In fact, I tried Starfield on it a few weeks ago and the performance was amazing. Actually even close to the 4080 on my Alienware. The 6700 with the Legion specially easily can see the effective TGP of up to 140 watts depending on the title. Legion NEEEDS to bring back the advantage edition, I have been SOOO looking forward to the 7000M series but they really are non existent especially in Canada. Last I saw was in the Alienware M18 and to me that is just a giant ingot of a machine so I never bothered in that. We need premium treatment for AMD. I think these guys just kept their focus on their Z1 systems for handheld gaming for the past some time. Such a shame. I think I should perhaps re run the benchmarks on the 6700M for 2023 :). I refuse to sell this Machine. Its sad people are just so blinded by the Nvidia Intel show of power. I am rooting for AMD. we NEED competition in this space. Nvidia has shown on several occasions that they are only too happy to rip of gamers. AMD needs to keep fighting

      Yes, sadly Radeon 7000M series has been kind of a joke, and there are barely any high-power AMD Advantage laptops available, even in the United States. In fact, I had to get my Legion 7 6700M refurbished as there were no new ones available anywhere. Luckily it wasn't too expensive, being $900 or so, but still the supply is ghostly. The Alienware 18-inch laptop is kind of a joke from what I have seen, especially since a 1080p screen is pathetic for such a screen size and overkill for the 7900M. 480Hz is also useless on it because very few games can even reach that target unless they are CS:2/Valorant/Geometry Dash, not even Fortnite can do that reliably, and it has abysmal drivers (25w at sleep is insane). Even 2560x1440 with 165/240hz would be far better than 1080p for that big of a display. In addition, I prefer AMD over Nvidia because of their more open-source mindset & drivers, and I cannot get Adaptive Sync to run at all on Nvidia cards - I can't tell a difference on Nvidia GPUs, but on AMD cards it works flawlessly.

And honestly, I personally CANNOT tell the difference between 144hz and 240 hz.. maybe it is my old non- esport eyes, but really many agree that only the very capable can spot the difference. 1080p panels should only be allowed with laptops that come with integrated graphics or perhaos with a 4050m. How is the display on the gen 8 compared to a MacBook XDR? I have an m1max 16 that's about 1 year old and I really want to replace it with a windows laptop.
    Im thinking legion 7 gen 8 (preferably 7945hx(not yet available)) or legion slim7 gen8 7940HS(not yet available)
    and I'm also very excited about the new Yoga Pro 9i miniLED 4070.
    Since I'm a software dev student, I don't need the maximum performance but rather design/build quality and a good display!
    slim7 will have a new 3.2k display btw.. which do you recommend?

    • @kazmiee
      @kazmiee  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the question PK. I suppose the biggest compromise would be the battery life and the native media edit capabilities. Siding with AMD can definitely help with efficiency and battery life. but with a software dev use case especially if you are constantly compiling large coding sets, the intel currently offers proven capabilities. I have yet to get my hands on the 7000 series Ryzen so not sure practically how good it might be. For the screen, even if you are 16 inch, the 1600P QHD+ option should offer great pixel density while saving power consumption. The 4070 would be perfectly reasonable for mainstream GPU usage for rendering and 3d modelling gaming. You dont have to spend more for higher wattage as well since the 4070 is known to peak out at 90-100w so a thin device like the slim 7 gen 8 paired with a 4070 and qhd+ display will offer awesome value for money

I absolutely enjoy every bit of exploring new tech and playing even a tiny role in helping fellow tech enthusiasts and gamers in connecting to their ideal machine. Keeping the art of pc gaming alive is just so important; whether through comradery in a competitive match or getting lost in a awesome story in a world or a time far far away. As we all get increasingly busy in our adult lives, I feel laptops provide a convenient (albeit expensive) way to quickly jump into our respective worlds wherever we want. Sorry, I went on a monologue there; but thank you again for your kind words; I hope this channel can continue to match people with their machines - it is unfortunate it is becoming increasingly difficult to take time out of my working life to develop content and also expensive to keep cycling through new machines; but, such encouragement really helps me to keep on going. That's normal since Nvidia put a voltage limit at 1.0 to 4070 and below cards. For me, it's such a waste potential for thick laptops with robust cooling and just be paired with a technically speaking 100w card.

Well no. Lenovo also had the audacity to STOP SELLING the laptop, so now I have to buy it used from a sketchy amazon seller with little to no reviews, and I am praying that they don't sell out before I choose to buy or the laptop straight up doesn't work, and then school will begin for me, so this is a nightmare. When you say "fair" comparison, you don't just "turn off raytracing, don't use dlss", dude those are literally some of the key factors that make Nvidia superior and more expensive than AMD. I always feel annoying when reviewers just casually casted aside the great features that you get with more money on Nvidia and then say it's a "fair" comparison, when you utilize raytracing and dlss (which you should because that what you get paying more and those are very great tech) the different in performance will be so huge that it would make AMD performance like a joke. Like the old ones used to say "You get what you pay for". My point is to compared the overall benefit of getting Nvidia over AMD not these two laptops only.

      @kazmiee  Před rokem +1

      Hey thaibinh, thank you for sharing thoughts on this and I think your point of view is fair. Raytracing is the future and DLSS is a very useful feature for many. I'd think that it all comes down to personal preferences in the end. As a casual gamer myself who is driven towards more story driven titles while being sensitive to budgets, I personally like to maintain sharp textures (which visibly deteriorate even under DLSS 3) while also getting reasonable frames to enjoy the overall experience.
      It is a universal fact that AMD has barely a quarter of the Ray tracing horsepower that Nvidia has right now but that is alright; RT is an advanced feature and is very resource heavy for now providing very unique circumstances within games where its results can be properly enjoyed. Not everyone would even notice the difference for many of the games. My intent was to share raw performance results after which it is up to people's personal preference to tweak it around using DLSS/ FSR / RT etc.
      I also sometimes think that we loose too many people to the console because of its low cost of entry and AMD based laptops, which are obviously still significantly more expensive than say, the PS5, offer great portable gaming performance with good value for money and as PC gamers we should encourage healthy competition. Not everyone has deep pockets to afford the best but that should not limit them to enjoy a decent overall experience especially considering portability

Thinner, lighter, can go upwards of 100w TGP and maintains the premium look n feel WITH the biometric login as well. That should cost near 2100 CAD

    If you use Solid Words / CAD and you also travel alot, your best bet is to go with the AMD Version. Much better Performance

    I bought almost months ago the i7 7th gen 12900hx with the 3080ti. I am completely disappointed with the direction they went with the 8th gen. No fingerprint reader, plastic ugly vents, less usb C, less refined lower quality, slower ethernet port (upside-down), plastic touch pad, no pressure programed buttons, no vent holes across the power button area, and no honeywell thermal phase change cooling pads on cpu and gpu.

    • @kazmiee
      @kazmiee  Před rokem +1

      I hear ya. I mean this is exactly what the 5 series was for. Lile the difference between the 5 series and the 7 now is no front rgb bar. White keyboatd lights., broadly same thickness too i guess, similar looks. Obviously you cant get the 4080/90 on that. But i guess getting the 4070 on the 7 series is basically, a terrible idea.

    • @mehdishirazi3
      @mehdishirazi3 Před rokem +1

      @@kazmiee Yup, they basically took an i5 and put a 3900hx with a 4090 and called it an i7, not worth it. This is what happens in time of bad inflation and economy. It's called shrinkflation, typically done in foods with portion sizes but has moved on to everything else. The worse part is the quality went down too for the same price. The keyboard deck is plastic not metal and the 7 series was always all metal till now.

    • @kazmiee
      @kazmiee  Před rokem

      @@mehdishirazi3 good point yeah. For example, the 4080 on the AW X16, is like 4300 CAD and legion 7 with same specs is like 3200 CAD. so it definitely is cheaper than the competition right now

      Apologies for the late reply! God, I have not experienced either unfortunately; but from what I have heard and read, the G16 would generally be the safer bet; did you make a decision yourself on this? did you buy a new machine recetly?
