I think I only ever got on well with two women on Japanese tinder. One played bass and we got into long discussions about music. The other was a housewife that just wanted to practice typing in English on her phone so she would just send me periodic messages throughout the day like: "Made the baby dinner. Yay." and "What does _____ mean?"

Definitely one of the most difficult countries to experience tinder on haha
Because it's very homogenious, language barrier, not in thier culture to use apps for hookups, and most importantly.... Japan is first-world nation, and their women aren't desperate for foreigners. There's no "angle" for a westerner to play. A japanese woman wiil only get with you if they actually like and are attracted to you. Money and status doesn't mean much because they ain't poor like SEA women.

@@Live4This : They're just more driven by a cautious approach to close personal relationships. Often profiles, in Japanese, which this poser obviously doesn't understand, will say explicitly that they aren't interested in married men, one night stands, people who just want to 'do it,' and so on. If they explicitly say they do want those types of relationships, 95% of the time they also want "pocket money" in the amount of typically $200, little more or less.
They rarely looking for sex; most often they are actually looking for love or more often a friendship.
Sure, if you're central to a major metropolis like Tokyo or Osaka, and you're of foreign ethnicity, your chances of 'hooking up' are better, but not so much as they are in the United States, Canada, the UK and so forth.
Face changing filters are extremely common in countries like Japan. It's not very beneficial for dating since you're basically being lied to / getting catfished.
I think the reason for the letter names and the few photos is to keep anonymous in Japan. To my knowledge, hook up culture is frowned upon by the more traditional Japanese. I think it's a way to try and hide your identity if you want to participate in hook up culture.
I think you are definitely correct. I also think tinder is seen as more of a hook up app in Japan then in a lot of places. I know in Canada some people use if for dates without the intention of hook ups. Therefore in Japan they feel more of a need to hide their identity.

Always interesting to see people from other cultures analysing Japanese culture. Interesting insights.
However the reasons are much simpler. Japanese girls are judged by their looks since young. Most of them do not think they look good enough to be posting photos of themselves. Only girls who are confident in their looks will post photos of themselves, anywhere on social media, Instagram etc. It is extremely common that girls have 0 photos of themselves, and just a few edited/side shots that makes them look good.
They also don't want to be seen on the app by people they know, so they use fake names etc.
Hookup culture is extremely common in Japan. Out of all the Asian cultures I have been a part of, Japanese people (not the fake public culture) normalize a lot of sexual activity that doesn't happen in other countries. Some girls don't mind having sex with guys they don't want to. They just see it as a small inconvenience. "Oh well, I did choose to go to his place, so I guess it's to late to reject now." Etc
Also just fyi a few of the girls' profile you swiped through literally says they are here for hookup only and shows their face. People who wanna hookup usually are the ones that are fine with showing their face. They think they cute enough and wanna meet good looking guys. (Hookups with good looking guys only, was written, in a subtle way but very clear.)
This goes out to all the guys watching this who fail to get a single swipe on tinder in their own country but desperately believe that when they get to Japan they’ll suddenly be swarming in hot girls they matched with.

Oh hey man! I remember seeing your comment on another video. Defo agree. I’ve had decent looking guy friends get matches on bumble and tinder. Whereas me, who pretty much swipes right on everything, in the spirit of throwing out darts and hoping they hit in a dark room, gets basically zero matches. On bumble I get like three a month and most disappear 😂

It does highly dend on location. If you're in the middle of Tokyo or Osaka, of course you're going to match up a lot; you don't even need Tinder. But outside of urban centers you would be better off with a Japanese app like YYC.
On Tinder in Tokyo everyone is on there to hook up. If you're out in Chiba or Saitama a lot of people are just looking to chat, or at the most meet activity partners--or they're straight up looking for marriage.

I know that good looking young Japanese guys are hooking up left right and centre while a lot of older white guys mewl like a kitten sucking on a hind teat about the slim pickings neglecting to honestly assess what they see in the mirror.

The amount of effects on the pics is insane.
I tried Tinder when I was in Tokyo. All of the guys had profile photos. 1-3 photos. Managed to meet 3 of them and they were all nice and polite. The other one is still in contact with me and maybe he wants to be friends with me because he kept telling he can’t wait for me to visit again.
He is a Dentist and he brought me to Ginza 2x for lunch and dinner :)
Maybe those girls are shy to be seen on Tinder that’s why they blur their face or have weird photos.

@@cerealjam I think it is because Japanese value their privacy too much and shy if people who know them see their photos online like on Tinder. Some of them might be cheating and/or married. I have seen some videos about it on Tiktok and for foreigners who are living in Japan and their dating experiences. I am of asian descent so I am not sure if that is also important

Lmao I also try using tinder here, a lot of guys took photos with filters and makeup, also fake names and only ramen bowl photos. Some profiles are full of Kanji (obviously I cant read), and there is one single sentence: English is ok =))))

Well Japan is way more strict so people tend to want to stay on the low and do their business and ciao. it's used manly to have a physical relationship nothing more if you a foreigner it's easier to have match but it's cause you are an easy target for them don't expect no deep relationship cause it's never gonna happen.

Just found this account, such insight honestly, not just this video but other ones on here too, I’m learning Japanese to which I’ve been learning for two years, this year more vigorously to actually try to be somewhat decently fluent, I have a trip planned next year ( たのしみ！),to see what it’s like and whether I wanted to move there or not, I am trying to paint a picture I will have my associates in business and my associates degree when going on the trip, I might take some friends with me as well, I honestly want to meet people and Have new foreigner friends, I’m 20 years old right now and I will be 21 when I go on the trip, I swear Im a likeable guy and make friends really easy but I wanted to know more about Japan social relations, I don’t think my looks matter because I am confident in my looks and body, I eat very healthy and workout a lot, I am average height of 6,3 and yeah I’m not terrible looking. I hate to try and sound cocky about myself but I am trying to paint a picture, you know about travel and are a cool guy that’s why I trust your results in your videos, What should I do?, I like Japanese girls but I don’t know if they would like me, a lot of other girls like me, but they seem like a total waste of time, I never really ask for advice with girls on that specifically, but I also wanted advice on just how you’ve made base to base friends in Japan, sorry if this is a lot to take in, I’m just laying my thoughts out?
Hey, I appreciate the support. Thats a lot, but let me see if I can touch on some of your concerns. As for my base of friends, before I moved to Japan and started attending school here, I stayed at a hostel for a long time. I made a lot of friends by socializing at the hostel and at bars. With Covid that is harder, but hopefully when you come it will not be a problem. There are lots of western style bars that gaijin go to and a lot of locals go to because they want to learn english. These are good places to meet people and use a mixture of japanese and english. If you are confident in your japanese, traditional izakaya are also a great way to meet people because it is a small setting where you can talk to everyone, but this can be intimidating and my japanese is not that good yet haha. As for women, I would say the same rules apply, gaijin bars are a great place to meet some japanese women that are interested in foreigners or know a little english. I find it a lot tougher to approach women on the street like I would in Canada because my Japanese is not good enough. But their are also apps like tinder and pairs you can try your luck at. I know a lot of people who use Hello Talk as well. It is a language exchange app for making friends, but some of my friends have ended up dating girls they met on it.
