My daughter just purchased a smart and I found your video on the air con as ours was doing same thing. Nice to see someone solve problems, which gave me the confidence to try the same for this car.
I just purchased a 2012 Passion. I found some wally had stripped the drain plug thread and then bogged it up with plumbers tape. I had to put a thread insert in. What a nightmare as access was impossible. I have my own vehicle hoist but it was an extremely difficult job. I love the little car. I drove 42 tonne articulated tankers for years so this is a huge change for me.
Such a shame you had to deal with that. I can never understand how people cross thread things like a sump bolt - you just feel it if something isn’t tightening correctly and certainly don’t keep winding it in regardless!
Just done my oil service, my issue was the gauze section of the drain plug I noticed small debris in it, but the old oil was nice, after cleaning it up I realised the small pieces were from the degradation of the gauze structure as I could see missing bits where it should have been. It wasnt the silver metal colour or the main black plastic bit but a narrow section of black stuff that I hope is plastic that coats a bit of the gauze for some reason. Only looking really close would anyone know it was the gauze plug causing the pieces its hard to see. I had no choice to refit it with the new oil. But I have a new drain plug with gauze delivered now and look forward to replacing it. Its quite funny, the gauze did its job catching the debris but the debris was part of the actual gauze! Something to look out for.
The oil pump pick up strainer should prevent anything major from entering the oilways but always best to replace this additional gauze if in any doubt. Hope you can swap it over quickly without losing too much of your new oil, unless you are changing it again precautionarily.

I change the oil on all my vehicles at 5000 miles/8000km or yearly, whichever comes first. The early 450 models were more prone to engine issues, sometimes without high mileage but this was largely dependent on maintenance/driving style and an element of luck. The 451 models have a much stronger Mitsubishi engine and I haven’t known engine life problems with these.
Yep it does seem a little on the high side but I checked multiple sources and came back with the same figure. Some might decide to use a lower torque setting.
@@grahamblower152 I’ve not had any issues undoing these sump plugs at next oil change when tightened to 65nm and it’s quite a large sump plug. It also has a substantial copper washer, which I always replace.
@@grahamblower152 on the 451 petrol models with the Mitsubishi engine I use 5W30. People use different viscosities depending on climate but for the temperate UK I’m good with 5W30.
Alternative no 2 is to swap the sump plug for a Stahlbus valve. Two minute job to save years of worry. Thanks for the outstanding video quality.

The first time I changed the oil and filter on mine, I discovered that the last person to do so must have been a gorilla with a 6ft breaker bar.
This is exactly how the sumps crack!

Just watch another couple of videos and the all say 48ft lbs or 65nm

Replacing the oil from parkers parts they recommend 0w 40 oil .... what's the difference between the oil you used
