I'm no fan of EV's (or SUV's), but in my opinion, this is where EV's shine. Small car, small battery, lightweight, fast-ish to charge, easy to park and with modest price (for an EV). As a city runaround, it makes a lot of sense and has a fun element. With EV's now so big, heavy and expensive and 100kWh batteries becoming the norm, the YoYo just sticks two fingers up to all that. Nice review too.

    • @karmanline2005
      @karmanline2005 Před 17 dny +3

Well, yes, but no!. From an engineering perspective small cars are much more difficult to design ,especially to meet legislation, customer expectation and value. Larger cars are easier to design. The fixed costs of design, purchasing, manufacturing, transport, sale etc are almost the same for a Polo as they are for saya Q7. Emission and driver aid tech apply to all. And manufacturers are primarily focused on profit before all else.

It probably is less than 10K, but then the UK government steps in to protect the UK economy, and Whacks on the extra 6K in import tax, VAT, registration cost and whatever else they can think of. And to be fair, whether or not you agree, there is a point to be made for that… if only European car makers could be bothered to make a car that cheap, the car market would become a whole different ball game altogether.

So this is for people who don't want to carry anything bigger than a handbag and a couple of ready meals, don't have a family to carry anywhere, don't travel more than 10 miles from home, don't want to travel on motorways, dual carriageways or A roads and don't want to charge in public ...presumably because they have another car that does all of that. Even for a dedicated city car, it's a bit niche isn't it? It's basically a luxury disability scooter for the elderly widow.
I like the idea of a small city car, but it does need to be able to carry 4 people in a squeeze, it needs to be able to carry 6 bags of shopping, it needs to do the national speed limit in comfort and it needs to be able to travel at least 100 miles ...at night with the lights on and with wipers and heater actually running.

I was wondering about the range anx as you had already driven from London to home but the A12 bit makes that more understandable. Love this little car but there's so much lower end choice now, with loads more just about to come that I feels its missed the emerging market by a few years, pity about the price would be great to stick the kids in as a first car, a lot safer than a motorbike !

When other cars like this have been reviewed in China they are just a few thousand.
Might be interesting to see where the money is going and yes there are extra costs/taxes in the UK. And let's not forget the looming road tax next year. This will be the same as much larger cars.
I've owned a Smart and room wise it looks very much the same.

Thanks for the review and I also love the comparison of the Train Adventure cost... a lovely "underline" IMO. Quirky & Fun, yes indeed but like all things, subjective to the individual but that's OK too.
You did mention Heating & AC but not about what it's consumption is and if it is a Heat Pump (more efficient) or not. That can be a range killer and an important detail I think.
The price ? at 16K Pounds I think it's too steep for what this is. Had they doubled the battery then fine. To me, this would be better placed in the 10K-13K range.
Given the above, I could see this "grow" into a 4 seat model with larger battery & more cargo area (including fold down rear seat) and make for quite a suitable daily duty runabout.

I’d love to see them become popular. You rightly state about being the right or wrong car. I’d love a car that can bridge our two major cities where I live. Sadly I’d have to stop along the way in this, to charge. With its very slow charge rate that then makes it the wrong choice for me with those ideals. Now if they quadrupled the charge rate, or supplied a 20kw battery version, this would be perfectly acceptable for my ideals already mentioned. That’s probably where the springer comes into it. But for city commutes, it’s perfect, albeit a bit pricey…. I can get secondhand Leafs locally that will do all that, for less….

Massively overpriced for what you get. But saying that my mobility scooter cost £6k, I can get next to no shopping on board. It doesn't have.a roof. The waterproofing of controls is questionable and I max out at 8 mph. Oh and it's recommended to replace both batteries every 300 miles. So what do I know?

You been to look into electric adult enclosed Trikes next time you are buying. That's how I get around. Can do 31mph some can go as fast as 40mph as a rest seat some even come with air von miw unfortunately mine did not and some even have a little boot but you can always use your rear seats for that if it does not have one. I have electric windows, drilled disk brakes, alloy wheels, leather seats and a radio in mine :) . It does me perfect for the time being.
Would share a link unfortunately it's not possible to do that on You Tube 😢 .

If i was really eager to charge quicker i would ask the distributer to modify the charging side of things with a simple upgrade at a nice price. What if this could speed up things to 1 Hour or less. I mean LOTUS can do it why not YOYO? Some companies might consider leasing these for their employees if they pay the Energy to charge it themselves. It is a whole new category of investment.

An interesting funky looking little car perfect for the city, if it was £6 or £7k cheaper. It's just way, way too expensive for what it is. And I really wish motoring journalists would stop comparing it to the Citroen Ami, this is an actual car the Ami is a heavy quadracycle, a completely different class of vehicle not to mention the Ami is half the price.

I see a few issues with this, for a small car the doors look quite long which in a crowded supermarket car park will make like difficult, the battery when new gives possibly 91 on a good day with the wind behind you but what happens over time and in the winter when you are using lights, wipers and heating/fan. For mums this is a non starter, it you have more than 2 children you are stuffed and the price is just too high, so on face value small cheap and unusual, but in practice nah.

  • @simonkensington-fellows6142

The problem with quoting average daily mileage and average commuter mileage is that is does take into account those times where you need to drive further to visit friends and family or when you need to pick up the kids or do the weekly shop!

If only people would buy a car that perfectly suits their needs… this is very nice or those people who only use their car to commute to work, a bit of shopping in the weekends, and going on holiday simply means off to the nearest airport, mostly by train because of parking charges. And let’s face it, there are a few million people that this car would be Perfect for.
Sadly however, not for me, towing a trailer for our camping holidays with our own Glamping gear, and planning to get a towing caravan in a few years, I’ll stick to my SUV.

Niche car for a niche market in my opinion. And when you gave the price I laughed out loud -- if it was 10K cheaper I''d consider it -- perhaps one day eh.... For commuting I'll stick to my Honda CB125 F. It cost me less than £3K new and has a tank range of over 400 miles at 140 mpg. I'll take getting wet for the cash in my pocket. It also goes 70 mph...
