[HD] Bea Arthur: Goodnight, but Not Goodbye - The Star Wars Holiday Special
Vložit
- čas přidán 18. 06. 2016
- It's about as HD as a bootleg TV special from the 70s can get. I desnoised the audio and video and did some fudging with the color balance. It's better than any other version I've seen on CZcams.
For more information regarding this travesty:

I do not own the rights to anything in this video. To the best of my knowledge, the rights to this very "special" special belong to Lucasfilm, and by extension Disney. - Zábava
Bea Arthur did this for her son, who was a big star wars fan as a teen
Aww thats sweet.... but was it worth it?
Yes this is a weirdly good song
Do you think he's forgiven her yet?
@@alexander9703 LOL
@@chasformer3091 Yes. Yes it was. It proves that she was so awesome she could be good in THIS.
Bea Arthur might be the only person to get through this special with her dignity completely intact. Even with everything surrounding her, she sells this like it's the most important thing in the world
I’ve come to learn that’s the key to things like this.
William Shatter and Adam west played Kirk and Batman like it was Shakespeare and I think that level of dignity helps keep things while campy still have a sense of respectability.
Anyone else would have probably taken a song about a bar closing surrounded by a Jim Henson creature convention as a joke, but Bea plays it as sincerely as anyone ever could and I think that commitment to it really elevates something that would be silly to being surprisingly heartfelt and even sad at times
Word
Perfectly stated!
She actually did this for her kids that were _Star Wars_ fans...
THATS IT- I’M TURNING BACK
She really was the one bright spot in this special.
Ya She Was She Had The Best Singing In The Holiday And Thats All
Don't forget about Boba Fett.
You must be mistaken friend.
The whole special is great. :{
Sorry For The Convinces
It speaks volumes that after all this time, while Lucas calls for the specials utter extermination, order 66 style, she’s been re-canonized, while boba fett cartoon gets into a blue ray release.
I like to think that the cantina was full of tough criminals, smugglers, and badass bounty hunters, but they all joined in singing and dancing because everyone loved the woman.
I mean she is Bea Arthur
and they all seemed like friends with each other
Pretty sure that's probably part of the point, especially considering the couple of violent outbursts
Y'know Bea was a good actor when she made you cry during the fvcking Star Wars Holiday Special.
This is a fact
I would rather have the whole Holiday Special be taken place in the cantina with Bea Arthur.
I kind of want to see this character pop up in Star Wars Rebels now.
apology89 As much as I would love that...I honestly couldn't see them doing it justice without Bea Arthur voicing her...and that's sadly a little hard to do now.
They put Tarkin in Rebels, and soon enough old Ben Kenobi.
Robert Angelli Yes and while those 2 characters are amazing and I'm sure they will do Ben justice...this is Bea Arthur we are talking about...I don't know I just would rather they not have her character in this because I feel they could only do it with Bea Arthur.
Apparently Ackmena appeared in a "Star Wars" novel!
Lizzy Chrome I believe it was a Fate of the Jedi novel, she helped free slaves.
Her dance with Greedo is pure magic
He’s a close character to greedo but he is actually bludlow who bears a striking resemblance to greedo himself
You could say....
Bea Arthur charmed first.
I like the little twist at the end when she sings "good night, but not ..." but leaves out the "goodbye" indicating that she isn't sure if this good night might actually mean goodbye.
"Picture it: Tattooine, 1922. A young Tattooine girl..." "Ma! Not now!"
Well always have Tatooine 1 aby
A sad song. But not a bad one. I'd wager the best part of the special, actually.
Does She sing this EVERY night???? hahahahaha. Every. Damn. Night. For 15 Friggin Years!
The whole special should have been Bea's character trying to save this bar.
true
In today's canon a holiday special would be about random characters celebrating the life day
I would love to see like the Bad batch or Mado help Bea save her Bar
They should have had a Lord of the Rings Holiday Special and had Bea Arthur play the innkeeper at the Prancing Pony.
She’s been dead
She was alive at the time of the LOTR, sadly they did not have this great idea
yeah and Robin Williams could had easily played Tom Bombadil in the movies.
So much missed opportunity here, really.
@@gamingchinchilla7323 Holy hell, Williams as Tom Bombadil, that would have been the best thing ever! He'd have stolen the show and the fans would have demanded his return in the following parts xD
Ghostbusters Holiday Special.
The amount of times that friend is just rhymed with friend is more than made up for by the fact that this is an oddly satisfying bop.
Did you ever wanted to see Bea Arthur sing a mix beetween the cantina Song and Those were the days? Well my friend arent you lucky
God Will Get You For ThaT GOLLUM!
I'm not the only one who thought it was like Those Were the Days.
@Dennis Morrigan McDonough That makes sense since she was in Three Penny Opera in the 50s.
I just watched an interview with Bruce Vilanch where he said that they wrote this song specifically for Bea because she was known to people at this point as Maude, but the general public didn't really know about her background on Broadway or as a musical theater singer. It was meant to sound like a piece by Brecht, specifically something from "The Threepenny Opera" which Bea originated a role in. Pretty cool shit!
I've just watched that interview. The c***face anecdote is absolutely hilarious, but I can't tell which alien he is referring to.
@@nkt1 same! I think it could be possibly more than one...as Bruce says, George is very vaginal
It is Brechtian style, her random sing reminds us that we’re not watching real life and the song is juxtaposed ironically, with cheery upbeat music but with sad somewhat tragic lyrics
C**tface alien is the one with the orange jacket. Look at 2:23, his mouth lol.
The holiday special used all aliens from the first movie - Google - "Ponda Baba".
Bruce Vilanch mentioned in one interview with Gilbert Gottfried's podcast that Bea knocked C*ntface over while swinging her mug at the end of the song and she ad-libbed "I've never hit a man in the C**t before" - so they edited that out (watch how at the end the orange jacket alien was cut at 3:40) -
I love reading comments like this on video, where I get to learn shit I might not otherwise bump into.
Say what you will about the overall special, but the fact that Bea Arthur singing such a cheerful and melancholy song both warmed and breaks my heart.
Somehow, the 'is that a tear, friend?'-line always gets to me. I dunno why; maybe it's the somber music; maybe it's the fact that it's surprisingly human and sweet (especially in a special that is devoid of genuine humanity and sweetness); maybe it's just the fact that it's a 'last goodbye' of sorts...
There's just something about that one moment that makes me tear up a little...
Somber space music, huh? I think you might like "Kin-Dza-Dza Theme" then :D
Haha it always makes me tear up a little too. I guess because Star Wars and the Golden Girls meant so much to me growing up in the '80s. And because I've had so many fun nights with friends in trashy bars, haha.
It's such a small moment, but I'm in love with the synths in that part of this song. It's so simple and resonate, yet has a bittersweet feeling of finality.
It really completes the feeling of how much Bea Arthur's character and her patrons are going to miss visiting the bar, even after the last tab.
@@foxinpox Agreed. That explains the feeling perfectly. Thank you!
@@goodmachines7743 No problem!
This song feels like losing someone close to you.
Compared to her role as Dorothy Zbornak, it’s almost like we’re seeing a softer, heartwarming side to Bea Arthur here.
Then again you’d have to be as tough as Dorothy to run the night shift in a “hive of scum and villainy”
This is legitimately great.
We’ll never be able to replace such brilliant talent like Bea Arthur. Rest In Peace Bea!
This is genuinely a character I’d adore to be brought into cannon proper. I know without Bea Arthur it’s like what’s the point but imagine in a comic or book it’s mentioned this cantina with the sweetest lady who used to run it
She actually is canon! She's mentioned in the novel From A Certain Point of View, and it's explained that she's the night shift bartender.
@@robertangelli8843I’d probably literally cry if there was an episode of bad batch or Mandalorian and they just even name drop her.
Truly she was one of the most golden of girls
They can always recast the part.
@@PungiFungi but who could replace Bea Arthur
Who cares about the “canon” of fiction
Ladies and gentlemen, the perfect woman.
YES, I'm not the only one who thinks so.
This is the strangest episode of Maude.....
Patrick Bright I know the Star Wars crossover episode was werid one. But hey it was thier last season they need somthing to keep pepole interested
I thought this was Cheers
I was sure Rose would be in this scene reminiscing to people in the Cantina about St Olaf😁😝
I was gonna say golden girls but ok 😂
@@jeditimelord2695 It's a generational thing. I grew up with Maude.
"It's not the end, friend, if you're a friend, friend"
That's some good writing.
On a par with 2024
Rip Bea we miss you!
Technically this is a Christmas song... So I'm adding it to my playlist
This special had nothing to do with Christmas. It's a holiday special, not a Christmas special.
@@bombabombom3603 And it came out at Christmas...
@@Pepsi_Man_Max So just because it came out during Christmas means that Jesus exists in the canon, right?
@@bombabombom3603 Yeah of course that's exactly what I meant... (You are aware this whole film isn't even canon right?)
This IS a Christmas song and by the power of Christmas over the Walt Disney media conglomerate it’s cannon now and forevermore
The only decent part of the Holiday Special.
Dan Williams boba fet agrees with that statement .
Well, that and the cartoon part is a bit of campy fun, plus the non-parade debut of Boba Fett.
And the Harvey's korman part I just love this song with bea
Well the entire thing should have been an animated Star Wars movie like the animated part
David the railfan 1999. But, but they ruined the cantina song by giving it lyrics
Only Bea Arthur can kick everyone out the galaxy's most wretched hive of scum and villainy in its drunken entirety without incident.
This and the cartoon were the better parts of the special.
And jefferson starship
This feels like the only scene where they actually tried.
Maybe the animated scene too. But basically, yeah.
Ya they actually put some thought into it lol.
This was one of the few scenes directed by the original director who was a alumi of Lucas' film school. He was replaced sadly.
There should be a show on Disney+ thats just Cheers but in this cantina
I just really love Bea Arthur and this is so wholesome and uplifting its the best
Her finger waggling dance with Greedo makes me smile 😄
Convinced that if this exact song had originated anywhere else besides the Star Wars Xmas Special, it would be a standard by now.
It's a remix of the first cantina band song from the original movie
The rat at 1:13 is fucking adorable and you cannot convince me otherwise
You are 100% correct
Rose "I fink is a mouse?"
Hey, Chris here.......my understanding is the rat used in this special was one of the rats used in the 1976 film "The Food Of The Gods"......it was a cheezy B movie horror/sci-fi flick. Not sure if U are familiar with that film or not........the rat puppets in the film are disturbing to me even though they are obviously fake.......figured I'd pass that fun fact along.
@@c.d.scalemodels9198rat is also an official thing known as a Tin Tin dwarf because Star Wars I assume was at some point scrapping the bottom of the barrel to fill the roleplay games
I'm actually grateful to this special, it turned me into a Bea fan.
Never felt anything in this special except for this scene. I actually felt sad for her and this song is great. I definitely think this should have been saved as well.
You gotta understand Greedo here is going through a tough time. He doens't want to be labeled as the guy that shot first
That's not Greedo, that's Bludlow. Do you think all Rodians look alike or something?
Stormy Dragon
I think that guy right there is a spacist. How do we deal with the likes of that pony, boss?
Spacer*. Also, Bludlow and Greedo wear really similar outfits.
Joe D. Pooly
What's a spacer? I said Spacist cause you know, a rasict, but IN SPACE!
Mothra Leo the Divine Moth Oooh. I get it kek
Back in March 2020 when everything shut down, I had to play this song.
sad world. this song makes me happy :)
You know it was the Cooking Show bit that made me realize what I was watching, but it was a choreographed Bea Arthur musical number in Star Wars that really forced it in.
Stir, whip! Stir, whip! . . . . Whip! Whip! Stirrrr! . . .
My wife has no interest in star wars and never did. I described the holiday special to her and mentioned "it even has Bea Arthur as a singing bartender". Her response, "that sounds dope!"
Everyone is talking about Bea Arthur, and while I agree that she was magnificent, we seem to be forgetting about the best bounty hunter in the galaxy
The Very Best part of the original SW Christmas Special! I hope everyone had a happy Life Day!
If I owned a bar, I would make sure that this plays at closing time every night.
I can easily see how this beats out the Acolyte. Seriously this was nicely done. No outlandish effects, just Bea Arthur singing.
Bea’s character Ackmena has been canonized and she was given a wife in an October 2017 story.
Is she married to Vice Admiral Hulbo?
Bea Arthur is a canonical singing bartender Lesbian in Star Wars. What a time to be alive.
Sjw pandering
Yes, clearly giving this little detail to a mere background character is SJW pandering. Ackmena was such an integral part to the larger Star Wars narrative. The SJWs are everywhere and they are destroying everything. @@KanishQQuotes
@@AmandaBear26 Unironically yes
Either this was actually good, or I was just so numb from how bad the whole thing was by the time I got to this part that I actually enjoyed it.
gnc623 nah I like this song and its the only thing of this I've seen
Let's give credit where it's due. This song is excellent.
Why is this so hypnotic?
Simply put everything about it is hypnotic, the weird alien costumes in the bar,the musical accompaniment in conjunction with the singing and chaos in the alien filled bar leaves you with a strangely familiar deja vu like feeling if you’ve ever been in a crowded loud setting including family gatherings during the holidays and school parties
You're among friends, friend
I've come back to this video a lot, and honestly? Despite the corny presentation,
I totally believe the idea of an elderly woman hosting the star wars Cantina while singing along in English with the band.
+1:18 Ye Gads - a Rodent of Unusual Size.
Honestly really catchy
I don't think anyone has ever tried this, but I'm writing the sheet music for trumpet and piano on this song. It's a really nice tune. If you want the sheet music, I'll upload it onto the internet once it's done. =)
Please post a link once it's done; I'd love to see that! :)
Hi Robert! Just let me know which instrument and I'll get it done as soon as I can! =)
Oh, don't feel like you need to rush or anything, lol. Whichever you prefer, I'm good either way.
Oh, dude, that sounds awesome!
Looking forward to it!
Hello! I have currently taken a break from doing it. Preparations for festival, concerts, and a trip to Disneyland! =) I'll get it done as soon as possible! Also, please note that for piano, it's only the melody. No chords. Still haven't learned that. =P I'll get it done as soon as possible!
If I ever have a funeral this is what I'd want playing at the end. The holiday special sums up my life perfectly.
This my decision too❤
She could really belt out a tune
Here we are in 2020, listening to this while the worlds closing down
2021 dec, and closing down again. what an awesome song
@@tommymarco 2021 and we lost Betty White hours away from 2022
@@fly_swatter_ I'm still in shock about Betty White. I had just heard about her planned Birthday celebration on January. This is such a loss. RIP Betty, Bea, Rue and Estelle
The entire special should've taken place here.
Blanche: The Empire wants my kidney
Dorothy: Your kidney?
Blanche: My kidney.
Rose: Why should they need your kidney..
Dorothy: TO FEED THE CAT ROSE!
Rip golden girls it’s not the end they will live on in every thing they ever did rip
This song is like the only good thing in the Christmas speical
This scene has more heart than anything Disney can produce with the brand.
Betty White is now giving Bea Arthur flowers at the end. 🌹
She did such a good job, and this whole scene is actually really touching. I just want all of them to be able to meet in this goofy cantina every night. The weird little band and the rat dude and Bea Arthur.
Oh Dorothy
Does Stan know that you're doing this

This is a legitimately amazing song trapped in horrible circumstances.
Easily the best part of an otherwise horrible show XD
The cartoon
@@larniieplayz6285 yeah the cartoon than this because of boba fett
1:12. Giant mouse. I bet its hell behind the controls of a star fighter
He's a cage fighter
This is what I imagine the NPCs in World of Warcraft do when Brewfest ends for the year. Lord knows that I felt like playing this song when the holiday ended.
Unironically the best star wars content since the original trilogy.
As a kid in the 80s I often lamented the quality of British TV such as Dr Who compared to Star Wars. This makes me feel better 😄
i absolutely love Greedos dance, i might use it from now on
and that large rat, beautiful.
It's on a par with the one in Of Unknown Origin
This better be canon, dammit!
Yes and no. The Special itself (and ergo this scene) are not canon, but Ackmena has been confirmed to be canon through one of the visual dictionaries.
Also according to Absolutely Everything You Need to Know this song is canon as well
MailChibi it used to be. But Disney changes that!
Why are you letting Disney dictate canon for you?
They're just fans making fan fiction in actuality. :{J
@@tetsuoswrath guess episode V is fan fiction then
The most oddly charming thing I’ve ever seen, right here
That super expensive inclusive Disney SW experience will not be complete until they have someone in their cantina, dressed as Ackmena, singing this two times a night.
Just one more round, friend
Then homeward bound, friend
Don't forget me in your dreams
Just one more song, friend
The night's get shorter it seems
Just one more rhyme, friend
Yes, it's a crime, friend
But you know time, friend
Time can fly
So it's goodnight, friend
Goodnight, but not goodbye
Just one more drop, friend
Before we stop, friend
One more moment face to face
Next time you're dry, friend
Try stopping by, friend
If there's a light in the place
We may not cry, friend
But we survive, friend
Look, we're alive, friend. You and I
So say goodnight, friend
Goodnight, but not goodbye
Just one more dance, friend
Just one more chance, friend
One more chorus, one more tune
It's not the end, friend
If you're a friend, friend
Then you come back to me soon
But it's too late, pal
To celebrate, pal
You have to wait, pal
Don't you cry
Now, it's goodnight, friend

3:11 I don’t ever now how to describe the sound of backup singers but still my favorite part!
If you wonder why this video has suddenly been watched about 50 times over the last few days... that was me, I can't stop watching it over and over, love it!!! XD
I was happy enough to finally find and watch the full movie on youtube just before last year's christmas, and crazy enough to watch it again next year... and especially this song and scene, I can't get it out of my head again.
I actually feel bad for her character
This is strangely touching.
Ladies and gentlemen, the perfect woman!
Hmmmm
I could watch an entire movie just about Bea and this bar, and it would have no doubt been 100% better than the entire special.
Bea Arthur's character here is better than anyone in the sequels.
Best episode of Cheers.
Thanks so much! I actually love this song.
Same here! It's the only good part of the Special!
Robert Angelli I actually like the Holiday Special a bit. =) I think it's great for kids! Except that one lady singing, that was EXTREMELY weird.

I would like to see a group of fans start singing this at the Star Wars galaxy edge bar, just before it closes for the night.
The best part of all Star Wars
God I love the studio lighting from the late 70's with all those lens flares, they don't film like that these days.
This hits different after quarantine.
ahhhhh, this is the best-quality version I've seen! thank you for posting this. I really dig this song, and Bea Arthur in general. :)

She never wasn't. Disney isn't canon it's fan fiction. :{
All this needs is Blanche seductively singing “I Wanna Be Loved By You” on top of the piano, Rose boring the guys at the bar with her St Olaf stories, and Sofia walking in telling everyone how badly they stink.
She was so sharp!
