Seiko MM200 GMT VS Longines Hyrdoconquest GMT: Which One Is The Best Diver GMT?

  • I love GMT watches whether they are flyer GMTs or caller GMTs. I've owned a bunch of them including the Rolex Explorer II, Tudor Black Bay Pro, Seiko SSK GMT, and more from Grand Seiko, Zodiac, and Traska. So it's no surprise that the new Seiko Marinemaster 200 GMT SPB383 piqued my interest considering it combined the looks of the Marinemaster 300 with a GMT function.
Then a few months later, Longines released the HydroConquest GMT with a much needed upgrade to the dial and bracelet, now featuring a very refined quick adjust clasp. Additionally they made this watch a dive GMT meaning that the watch is a dive watch with a standard (more practical) elapsed time dive bezel, but with the addition of a GMT function. Since I love dive watches and GMTs so much, did Longines make my perfect watch? Or does the charm of the very classic Seiko looking MM200 GMT make it a better watch in my eyes?
In this video, I’m going to compare the Seiko Marinemaster 200 GMT SPB383 and the Longines HydroConquest GMT by scoring 8 categories that cover the many different aspects of a watch such as the dial, hands, case, bracelet, on the wrist feel, and just how happy they make me feel. So which one will come out on top?

Great video and you make a good point about people being way too focused on specs and not giving watches a chance bc of it. Watch peoole enjoy the details but it shouldn't get in the way of enjoying a watch bc in the end 99.99% of the time water resistance doesnt matter and a watch running a bit faster isnt a big deal. If a watch makes you happy and if it wont break down on you then said watch is good to go!

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Před 8 měsíci +2

Thanks Ed! Yeah I see people saying that they love the watch but a particular spec isn't good enough. There are always going to be deal breakers but a little less water resistance or a movement that isn't Rolex accurate aren't big deals to me if the watch is really speaking to me. And plus if a watch is fast it's a good thing in my book so I'm never late lol!

I have a new Longines Conquest Chronograph in my collection (lovely watch) and kind of compatible to the Hydoconqest. I also have a Sumo limited edition with a 6R range calibre inside, which has been truely awful from day one! You cannot possibly compare these two watches side by side. Yes a Marinemaster with an 8 series calibre, but no no no. I also have a Seiko 5 in collection and the 4R36 movement inside that utterly outperforms the 6 series in the Sumo and let’s face it we’re looking at a calibre that costs about £50 (UK). The ETA variant in the Longines is an altogether better calibre (and far more costly)!

I'm wearing my Longines and Seiko in rotation. I prefer the Seiko though. I can't wrap my head around people collectively dismissing Seikos north of 1000 bucks. Maybe I won the Seiko lottery but my individual piece really outshines more expensive Swiss options with its intricate finishing and it also runs within COSC. My best purchase of 2023.

Perfect comparisson, exactly what I was looking for. I will go for Seiko not only for the price but especially for the case and overall look. So an extra 100$€ for a better bracelet will still be cheaper than the Longiness.

For 95% of people a callers GMt is more functional. This will start to be more accepted when the travel GmTs work their way into the affordable watch world (already happening). As the fixation on ‘true’ GMT is mostly about snobbery given they are traditionally only in more expensive pieces.

IMO Longines is clearly better watch in almost every aspect, but I like Seiko's design more and never like this design of Longines for some reason (Probably the hour markers being circular at 6-9 and date window). That's why I have green dial version of this Seiko in my wishlist and will probably buy it. I wish I like design of Longines so that I would get this peace definitely, because there are tons of value packed in it and this watch is at the same league with Tudor, maybe even better. Also congrats to Seiko to have very nice design and well finished case and dial. Watch collecting is interesting.

I’m about to sell my Pelagos 42, which has been my outdoor beater for a few years now. It’s served me well but I want to mix it up. I’m torn between this Seiko and the refreshed Damasko DC80. I’m leaning towards the Damasko even though it’s 2x the price because I find more utility in a central minutes chronograph than I do in a GMT, even though I travel quite a bit. But man, that Seiko is quite handsome! Thanks for the comparison.

Great comparisons. I personally think between the two, I'd likely pick the Seiko. I don't do much traveling abroad these days like I used to. And frankly I really don't even need a GMT watch, I just like the look of one. And with all that in mind, and the convenience of quick setting the date on the psycho, I probably choose to say go. And the Seiko has its own identity. Whereas this particular new GMT reference for the hydro conquest does look a bit submariner derivative.

Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the comparison! Lol yeah as much as I like to say I need to track other time zones it just comes down to me liking the look of the fourth GMT hand 😅 although tracking does come in handy every once in a while which helps me mentally justify it! And yeah the quickset date on caller GMTs vs the tedious date change on flyer GMTs is something that I think people often forget about. Not a big deal if it's always wound or in use but man when it's not....

The only point for Seiko to win is the price, USD 1500 over the USD 2775 of Longines that you can save a lot of money and even buy one more watch.

I don't own anything orange either so for me I enjoy the pop of color since it's subtle. An orange dial watch would be a bit much for me tho lol! The blue dial version is really good looking as well

Case quality of mm200 gmt is however very nice, movement is basically luck but within the range some +12 seconds, i do not complain, bracelet is good, clasp i liked it, design very nice despite the diameter, sits well, ceramic bezel. Have owned many spb range divers but this is a level above. Overall nice watch and it wins with versatility.

Not even comparable with the different GMT functions, so also not comparable in prices. If there was a Seiko vs Longines HC comparison, you’d have to find a Seiko diver with a flyer GMT. I find a look of the HC much more refined than the Seiko but I’m not a Seiko fan and absolutely abhor 4 ‘o clock crowns. You’re fully on the money with the Rolexey lugs though, it’s a bit much and a misfire as Longines has a pretty strong image and there was no need to go that way.

I’m sensing Seiko bias here. In the other video you mention the Hydroconquest doesn’t stand out compared to your other divers, and you put the King Turtle on there, which is inferior in every way both mechanically and in appearance. Anyone who’s seen the brown or green HC GMT would laugh at this claim.
You made a point in another video that you wear your Seiko far more than your Tudors 😏
And now here you claim the Seiko, using the 6R movement it uses in far cheaper watches, inferior bracelet, uglier design, uglier dial is better. This Seiko is basically built similarly to its cheaper divers. The Longines movement is far superior. Longines QC is better too. The Longines is also a traveler GMT, the Seiko isn’t. The only category the Seiko wins on is irs cheaper. It’s not even great value considering the movements are same they use in their sub-500 watches.
I also notice links to Seiko watches you get as commission but nothing from Longines, which seems to explain a lot.
Not impressed with the bias here
