The problem you have Rory that your hearing this for the first time. There's so much going on that you'll never catch it until you've heard it dozens of times. I been listening to/watching Uncle Frank since the late 60s. I'm still loving it, it still brings tears of joy to a crusty old geezer.

One of his best solos ! I was so lucky to see him live in France 3 times ! Unforgettable ! You should react to "The Purple Lagoon" from "Zappa in NY". It contains the best sax solo I've ever heard in my life !

You can witness film footage of him playing "The Muffin Man" or maybe it was "Black Napkins" While he is shaking Hands of Fans In the front row, he walks slowly with one hand out while he is shredding it is SUPERNATURAL!

lol @ holy fuck this is live! I do believe there is some xenochrony going on here, a technique Zappa invented and perfected where different parts or instruments from a song are taken from different performances in different time signatures, pitches, etc., and pieced together into one. That's why it sounded like they were doing whatever the fuck they wanted.

Rubber Shirt from this album is a good example of xenochrony as is the solo on Inca Roads from One-Size-fFits-All

    • @Grithron2
      @Grithron2 Před rokem +2

@@bobcorbin3294 My understanding of xenochrony (which implies "strange synchronicity") is that the word only properly applies where there is montaging of clashing/unrelated pieces of music. So Rubber Shirt, part of Yo Mama, most of the Joe's Garage solos, and other odd tracks like Canarsie and Friendly Finger, count as xenochronous, but...Inca Roads doesn't, because the solo comes from another take of the same song (likewise Outside Now doesn't count, because the solo comes from in-effect a take of the same song, even if it's relayed at slightly the wrong speed).

Thomas , G'Day , is that what it's called , Muffin Man , on Bongo Fury was put together using that method ,although the track was recorded in a studio , on the Album it Muffin Man sounds like a live track , he even introduces the band at the end Good night Austin Texas where ever you are . cool , Thanx Thomas

This song is actually three different solos that were spliced together, it is quite literally different songs put together like you said. The keyboard player who made his own backing to the solos said it was one of the hardest things he had ever done in his career.

FZ's mother, Rose Marie (née Colimore), was of Italian (Neapolitan and Sicilian) and French ancestry; his father, whose name was anglicized to Francis Vincent Zappa, was an immigrant from Partinico, in the Italian island of Sicily, with Greek and Arab ancestry. The reason for the costume on the album cover is a play on words. Many people mispronounce Sheik as "Sheek", when it's properly pronounced, "Shake". This came out shortly after "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty", a song recorded and released in 1976 by KC and the Sunshine Band. Hence, Sheik Yerbouti.
    As for the xenochony ,
    Vocal sections basic track:
    Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK
    February 28, 1978
    Guitar solo:
    Hemmerleinhalle, Neunkirchen am Brand, Germany
    February 25, 1978
Part of the backing track for the solo:
    Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK
    January 27, 1978

Check out Shut up and Play Yur Guitar. It is a triple album set of just live instrumentals. This band was very well practiced before they tour, just like the Mothers were.... Not a single note is played out of place. The sound is exactly as intended.

This might be a case of Xenochrony
Frank takes 2 or more completely unrelated tracks and puts them together
I’m this case the main song is recorded live in London and Solo is from Germany concert

The main sources are London and Neunkirchen but some unidentified parts of it are from a third source - a mid-soundcheck jam from London, not in the same key. No wonder Tommy Mars was so alarmed by the musical-mathematical riddle he had to solve when overdubbing new keyboard parts.

    so that’s what you’re hearing

I listened to the original solo on a bootleg, and a few parts were cut out, basically melodies that went nowhere. He went and edited that out and made it perfect. Same thing with rat tomago and prob all of his solos on records. Most of them are from live recordings but he edits them. He said his guitar solos aren't as good in studio compared to live for whatever reason

It was Live. When you have fan you feel more Energy! It is a Cocreation experience thats what he captured It was Spontaneous & unpredictable which on a Quantum level is just outstanding content of unlimited potentials endless creativity that my friends is God. Its fearlessness its trust its love its beauty he said he never knew what he was gonna play, which in hindsight is very spiritual and part of his musical alchemy. He was an alchemist for sure! ❤
The Grateful Dead played the same way just a different style.

To answer your question, Zappa's parents were Sicilian and Neapolitan with some Greek and Arab ancestry in there. But he was born in Baltimore and raised in California where his dad worked as a scientist in chemical warfare plants.
The feel of them going wherever they want to is a common staple of jazz composition. Frank didn't take drugs. But his some of his bandmates did, so long as it didn't effect them at work.

Frank kept extremely close in his guitar solo to the singing melody before. Unfortunately, you could not detect that. Not to mention staying in key, which was obvious. I could dissect this solo for you piece by piece, including the coda at the end of the solo. Nothing really chaotic there

  • @wowwhywow
    @wowwhywow Před rokem

This is my FAVORITE Zappa solo EVER!!!
Better that Watermelon... Better than Willie... Better than Napkins. Better than Drowning Witch... Better than Them or Us... And those are ALLLLL amazing solos.
I loved it from the first time I heard it. When the album came out. I have heard THOUSANDS of Zappa solos, and I'm not kidding when I say THIS is the best one.
    BUT...
You are wrong... and right about it being live.
Zappa used a technique that he invented called Xeno-Chrony.
It is a studio trick where you take the guitar solo from concert A and slap it on top of drums and bass from source B which may or mat not be the same song as the guitar solo... it might not even be the same key or rythym. He used it a few times (and this is the THIRD time he used it in an album on a song,) but the point is, that as beautiful as this solo is, (AND IT'S STILL MY FAVORITE!!!!!....) It's not really one solo from one show,. It's a mix with a weird twist that makes what you are hearing IMPOSSIBLE in a live performance.
It would be trickery... if Zappa hadn't written in the liner notes of the album that this is what he did. But he DID write it in there, so it crosses over into genius.
The next time you listen to this song, without camera distractions... you will probably come to the same conclusion as I did.
This is as good as Frank gets... and it's pretty fucking amazing.
