  • We are hardening some steel products and needed a way to verify the final hardness. Hardness testers are very expensive. This set of files made by Tsubosan is much more affordable - amzn.to/3vIhune
It turns out that these files work very well, and although the steps are in 5 HRC increments, you can make an educated guess if it's on the low end or high end of a range. Therefore I think that you can get about +/- 2 HRC accuracy.
    Where To Buy:
Hardness Tester File Set (English Instructions) - amzn.to/3gJXVFY
Hardness Tester File Set (Japanese Instructions) - amzn.to/3vIhune
EBAY Hardness Tester File Set - ebay.us/y7dP2j
In this video, I test the hardness of several pieces of hardened and non-hardened steel. One is a Coleman lantern check valve removal tool. The others are an X-acto knife blade, an edge deburring tool, and a drill bit.

I bought these and tried it once in the wrong order, for some reason I thought i was supposed to start at softest. Luckily I didn't use them a whole bunch of times so im sure they are still good.
I thought i was supposed to look for a scratch on the material, but i quickly noticed that some slid off and some grabbed and then i was pretty sure that was more what i was looking for. Thanks for making this video so I can do it correctly now.
