  • How To Carnivore Episode 22
For nearly 90 years a ketogenic diet has been used to effectively treat epilepsy and migraines without medication, and yet most sufferers have never even heard about this from their doctors. Worse yet, their doctors don't always know either. It has been shown time and time again to significantly reduce seizures in epileptics, and is still used today in top centers such as John's Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore. As we are now seeing with the upsurge in people taking on the Carnivore diet, the complete elimination of all plants has even better results.
If you know someone who suffers from seizures, send them this video. If they want a natural way to reduce or even eliminate their seizures and come off of their medications, these dietary changes have a proven track record to do just that.

Epileptic since '90 when I was 13 years old. The seizures and the zombification of my mind through anticonvulsant meds stole my life. I'm 47 now, and started strict keto three months ago. I used to average about 4 seizures per month for the last ten years (prior to that it was the same, but this is the time I have hard and fast data for). Been three months, not a single seizure or tremor since. Keto is the way. Now I can live.

I’ve had migraines for most of my adult life. On accident, I discovered years ago that eating red meat made my migraine go away very quickly, but they would always come back. It wasn’t until recently I learned about the carnivore diet and felt free to eat how I always wanted to eat that they went away. I haven’t had a migraine since I started carnivore and that alone is enough to justify eating this way.

I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 07. It took me until 2020 to decide to learn as much as possible about the human anatomy, effects of nutrition (balanced and imbalanced), what epilepsy is and after 2.5 years of research I've learned alot. Keto is moderate when treating epilepsy. Carnivore (alongside an electrolyte regime) is ideal for epilepsy. As long as a epileptic person is taking anticonvulsants they will never trully be cured. The cause of epilepsy (seizures) is excess electrical activity (excess neurons) in the neural pathways. Neurons are produced when 2 different electrolytes collide with each other. In this case calcium and sodium. The problem is that the standard American Diet contains way too much sodium and not enough potassium. Imagine the neural pathway is a wire and sodium and calcium are ions traveling through the wire. The potassium acts as a ground for the ions. Potassium (when properly balanced with sodium and calcium) prevents excess electrical activity (aka prevents seizures, headaches, spasms, twitches, migraines, etc). The proper balance is 2300mg of sodium, 1000mg calcium and 4800mg potassium. Also insufficient sodium and calcium compared to potassium can result in impaired cognition (not enough electrical activity being produced). There are 3 categories of anticonvulsants. #1 blocks sodium receptors (sodium won't be able to enter the neural pathways), #2 blocks calcium receptors (calcium won't be able to enter neural pathways), #3 either keeps the gate open longer allowing more GABA to enter the neural pathways or it causes the body to produce more GABA. Blocking sodium and/or calcium is dangerous to your health. Messing with GABA is unnecessary when the root problem is an electrolyte imbalance. The longer your on anticonvulsants the more addicted your body becomes to them. It doesn't take long (less than 3 months on anticonvulsants) to damage your brain and liver. The best treatment for epilepsy is to prevent it through proper nutrition and avoiding toxins (synthetic and natural).

Hi Turner9069, my husband, whom has epilepsy, found your post last night and has been really interested in learning more from you. He does find that with some electrolyte drinks he feels wired and believes that there is something to it. He is doing carnivore since May. He had a seizure at work in October and cut his head open to the skull. His lab work in the ER showed he was low on all his electrolytes. We got him Dr Bergs but he says something is off with it. Any suggestions? What about magnesium? Your post has us researching an area that we have not really thought about before. Thanks for posting!

I call it grassroots medicine. Top-down medicine has been failing us for a long time, so now people have to be their own scientists, researchers, observers, experimenters, etc, and spread the word of their findings to others.
People call that "anecdotal evidence" and dismiss it out of hand, but we live anecdotal lives in an anecdotal world. Anecdotal evidence can serve us very well.
Anyway, the word anecdotal doesn't mean false or frivolous, it simply means unpublished. From the Greek 'an'= not, "ekdotos"= published.
In ancient Greece, things were published by being hung up where people could read them. As long as the public had access to an item of information, it was considered published. So I figure if someone tells their story on youtube and three million people see it, that's more "published" than something in some obscure journal that only a few hundred people read.
If someone tells you "there's a bear in that cave" and you don't go into the cave, anecdotal evidence just saved your life. Was it a peer reviewed triple-blind clinical study? No, and it didn't need to be.

So glad to read some commentary here from people with migraines. There's actually not a lot of discussion about migraine specifically in this video. It's all in the last few minutes. Still very worth listening to. Big thank you for the work you are doing Dr. Chaffee.
I am a survivor of the water contamination at Camp Lejeune marine base. I was conceived and in utero there. As a baby, I had severe "colic" As a child had abdominal migraine. Starting in adolescence, hemiplegic migraine.
Began trying different ways of eating to try to help myself in adolescence.. It was always obvious that it was tied to my digestion. I tried sequentially, vegan, vegetarian, low carb, paleo, ketogenic, GAPs diet, AIP, Wahl's protocol, sometimes seeing some improvement, but still suffering. Terrible migraines continued, intense head and neck pain, vomiting, loss of sensation in my arm and leg, bad abdominal pain, nerve pain in the whole right side of my body, intense sensitivity to light and sound and smells, . . . utterly incapacitating, lonely, excruciating, unable to have a normal job, unable to count on being able to do anything consistently., struggling to deal with the stigma of migraine, the lack of full understanding from most people about what migraines are. Working to keep trying things to help myself while holding steady when they largely didn't work.
    I am 54 now.
I have been doing carnivore for 6 weeks.
It's the best intervention I've ever tried.
    I'm daring to feel hopeful.
If you are here wondering whether to try carnivore for migraine, DO IT. May need to be just ruminant meat, may need tweaking, may need to learn about histamines and eat fresh fresh meat. . . . Or? . . .
But I know, it's heading in a direction which means, LESS PAIN
    MORE LIFE.
    Good Luck.

The funny (sad) thing is that I had read MANY, MANY years ago that seizures in dogs are arrested by giving them fatty marrow bones. Some time later, I stumbled upon Dominic D’Agastino, Ph.D. (smart guy and body builder) whose research came up in my research. He was kinda saying the same things about humans. Then, one day I found myself in a restaurant in a rinky-dink town out in the Midwest where they had a sign posted asking for help for a little girl who had very bad epilepsy. I left the restaurant and got into the car, but all of a sudden I decided to go back in. I asked the cashier for a pen and paper and asked her to give the information I had written down to the parents of the little girl, then I left.
I have no idea what if anything ever transpired, but I often think about that poor little person and hope she’s okay. Btw, it was Dr. D’Agastino’s contact information I wrote on the paper.
I have great respect for Dr Chaffee, Dr. D’Agastino, and M.D’s and Ph.D’s in general, but many a DVM is way ahead of their two-legged serving counterparts.

Dr. Joel Wallach started as a DVM, then he became an ND to help people. His supplements are dosed by body weight, which makes sense. I have got epilepsy since I was 15, I’m 60 now. Always been on meds, but still have some light seisure activity. My epilepsy is located in my temporal brain section. The only time I get seisures is as soon as I fall asleep, or right before waking up. I never knew that medication can actually activate ectricity in my brain, causing seisures. Never knew about ketones being good if you have epilepsy. No doctor ever told me to go off carbs and sugar! I started ketogenic diet and ketofore because of my diabetic symptomes and arthritis. That helped a lot! Lost some weight too, but never felt changes in my epilepsy. I definitely want to learn more and hope to be able to live with less or no meds and seisures at all!

I've had migraines my entire life, I figured out mine are caused from pressure and temp changes. I've been on carnivore for 10 days now and so far through pressure and temp changes I have not had a migraine. As of the morning im writing this the pressure has been going up for a while now, I do feel a little something in my head, but nothing compared to a full on attack. I am hopeful that this will be my answer. @@denim4821 hello good to hear about the migraines going away for you :)
I am 58 now I did start with keto but did better with carnivore
I think good keto avoiding all the snacks and bombs and to many oxolates is a OK way to go but the carnivore just took what Keto started and turbo charged it for me :)
I would say I noticed it going away slowly and about a year in was very rare I used to get it daily or multiple times a day
After that year mark trying to remember since it was not that often after that year mark if I remember correct but was more the WOW I have not had this in a long time
the snapping on the back of the head thing ? Not sure if you heard of that before but started working really well here toward the last year like if it happened I could do it and it would be gone in seconds
I should say it could come back?
each time it happened the time to next time it would happen seems to double so I guess I could have it happen in a year :) but to me that is gone from a daily or many times a day and now that the snapping head thing works if it does its been gone in seconds :)

I started having seizures in 2018 from Bartonella in the brain. I had some short ones- I didn’t realize they were seizures at first and the drs I talked to said I was imagining things and wrote “munchausens” in my medical file. Then I went to er 2 months later & had 6 hrs of nonstop seizures. They gave me a variety of meds & nothing helped so the air lifted me to the university hospital 100 miles away. By that time seizures were done (I wasn’t aware of anything until 2 days later).
The sr neurologist accused me of faking everything & the other neurologist insisted it was psychogenic & likely related to childhood trauma (which i thankfully don’t have). They said this bcs the continuous eeg didn’t show seizure activity while I was there.
My Lyme dr was furious and showed me case studies that prove Borellia & Bartonella both get into the brain & nervous system & can cause seizures.
Based on other serious symptoms he concluded it was primarily Bartonella for me & put me on 4 antibiotics.. within a few weeks I was greatly improving.
Now I haven’t had a seizure since mid 2019. I’m still treating tick diseases & igenex test still shows positive for borellia, bartonella & babesia.
I’m 95% carnivore now & also megadosing thiamine in the form of TTFD. Elliot Overton goes into great detail about this. I’m continuing to improve and it feels great to finally be getting my health & life back after being pretty dysfunctional for 10 years and severe serious health issues since 2016.

We were able to stay off meds for a couple of years, but once he was put on meds, it only got worse and more complex. The neurologist’s only tool is to increase the meds until he is maxed out, and then add more meds. He is now on two and not controlled and of course they want to talk adding another med or surgery. We can’t even wean him off the ones that don’t work without him having withdrawal seizures. 😩 He did ok on keto/MAD, but we stopped, because it wasn’t fully controlling them. I've been carnivore (mostly lion) for nearly four months now. I'm still having TC seizures. In fact I'm having more in the past few months than I've ever had before. Though I don't think that's caused by the diet. More likely it's what the last AED did to my system that I'm still dealing with. Hoping and praying carnivore can help me get them under control. I am finding staying in high ketosis is actually harder on carnivore than keto, though that's also likely due to my dairy and egg intolerance. My options seem to be too limited to make it work really well. I may have to end up going just "mostly" carnivore to really get my ketones up higher.

I have eaten only beef and salt and water for three and a half years except for 2 times trying pork, then turkey, and then another time fruit, which caused lots of problems.
I have been eating grass-fed vacuum sealed ground beef for almost 2 years. But the grass-fed fat that I added to the meat was not vacuum sealed and would often smell slightly rancid. I have attributed my lingering swelling problems and gut problems to this fat which was becoming oxidized and developing histamines which I must be very sensitive to.
And so I tried to introduce grain-fed beef from the grocery store but would end up with explosive diarrhea. This I tried many many times because I was struggling even with the grass fed beef and I think it was because of the oxidized fat.
I have found that I have to eat meat that has been vacuum-sealed while still fresh. Otherwise the oxidation that occurs is detrimental and causes some swelling and gut problems. If the meat has been vacuum sealed while still fresh, in other words not exposed to the air, then I can eat grain-fed beef without any problem. In fact my swelling and gut problems are totally gone and my neuropathy phenomena it's pretty much healed.
I have also found that if I drink too much water too soon after eating a meal, I will get acid reflux. Taking a little dash of salt alleviates this to a large degree. But I have to be careful not to eat too much salt because then my body retains the water and my legs swell.
I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis which is an autoimmune disease and I'm 72 years old. Most of my health problems have been healed with this meat only diet.
I also tried the Paleomedicina way of eating very little meat and lots of fat but I couldn't do it since I lost too much weight and became very weak and wobbly.
So that then, in September, while doing my exercises I fell off a raised mattress onto the floor and broke my hip. The surgeon said that my bones were normal for my age which means I no longer have osteoporosis and that is why only the ball at the top of the femur had broken off and not the hip joint.
Since the Paleomedicina diet or the PKD didn't heal my thyroid I am back on Synthroid again after two years without it, but only a minimal amount.
I love this carnivore diet and this way of eating and hope to never have to go back to the SAD diet or any other way of eating!

My mouth is super dry and I’m drinking lots of water, salting my meat and eating til I don’t want anymore. Am I eating too much protein? Not enough fat? I don’t like the fattier cuts of meat but add ghee when cooking. Feel like I’m doing something wrong bc everyone speaks of this wonderful energy from going carnivore. 56 yr old post menopausal female. Thank you for sharing this important info.

Are you on any medications? That could also be affecting things. Also, you may be dehydrated if your mouth is dry, you may want to try less salt or more water. In my case upping my fat intake helps with energy. Play around with different fat ratios. Most importantly give it some time, your body may need more time to heal. I've been doing carnivore for 3 months now and I had low energy for quite some time and still do occasionally but things have improved quite a bit. One thing that helped me is fasting. If I do an extended fast for 24 to 48 hours I feel amazing, I have tons of energy. Carnivore enables me to go that long without eating very easily. My longest fast so far was 80 hours but 48 hours is the sweet spot for me.

The comment about not driving in the US unless you’re seizure-free for 6 months is not 100% true. It’s true if that’s your first seizure and it’s also true if you have a seizure disorder and don’t have warnings prior that allow ample time to pull over. However, if you do ALWAYS have a warning prior, with ample time to allow you to pull over prior to the seizure, then you are allowed to drive. I have ALWAYS had a warning (aura…mine is that I get deja vu with this intense feeling of fear and this odd heat flash that works its way up my body) and it’s always AT LEAST 20-30mins before my seizure (if not HOURS). However, you must make sure that your neurologist signs off on it and submit this to the DMV to make sure it’s on your license. My license says “Medical Alert” on it because of my seizures. It’s to protect yourself legally in case anything does happen when you’re driving.
I’d just like to add that I NEVER drive if I feel off in ANY way, even if it’s not my “typical” aura or anything typically related to my seizures. It really bothers me when someone who 1) I doesn’t even know me, 2) who has no clue about my medical condition, has only heard the words “epilepsy” or “seizure” and 3) has absolutely NO training in seizure disorders AT ALL wants to immediately call me irresponsible or whatever else when they hear that I drive. Sorry, buddy, but I’ve been dealing with these seizures for 20+ years now and I think I know my body WAY better than you do. What’s also kinda funny (more like ridiculous) is that people have no problem with those who have had DUIs and had their licensed revoked getting their license returned to them when they KNOWINGLY got behind the wheel when they shouldn’t have or the many other medical conditions people have that affect driving or the medications they take. I know my body and I’m not gonna risk my life or anyone else’s just so I can go to Target. And I surely know it better than some random person who jumps to quick judgment about others with no information. Please stop and think before voicing your unwarranted opinions about others’ medical conductions (this isn’t in reference to Dr. Chaffee’s comment at all, just something I felt the need to add because I’m sure of the thoughts going through some people’s minds as they read my comment saying that I drive, since I have had people constantly tell me how wrong I am for driving when they have no knowledge at all on the subject and have no reason to be voicing their meritless opinion).

Billions of creatures are killed when their natural habitats are cleared to grow these trendy new monocrops and seed oils (which require tons of petrochemical to grow) - then they have to be moved all over the globe requiring even more petrochemicals - and they are at least 10 times less nutrient-dense than meat meaning the transport of these foods is nowhere near as efficient ecologically as local meat production - which can be totally ecologically sustainable on existing farm and wildland. Vegetarian diets kill more creatures than meat diets!
