Proud Aussie here, say what you like about Poms but their chants are second to none. A lot of them are literally a full song and to see so many people singing it in unison is incredibly entertaining. I love the barmy army, it wouldn’t be and ashes test without them. They really influence the atmosphere and add another form of entertainment and spectacle to an already great rivalry. ❤

You've probably learnt about Hillsborough during your time in the UK, but that would make for a reaction video to get an insight into the causes and why it is still important today. As the recent BBC documentary showed, history nearly repeated itself at the Champions League Final in May.

Best chant I heard, happened at a Tranmere Rovers v Doncaster Rovers game almost 20 years ago. Tranmere striker Eugene Dadi was sent off, so the Doncaster fans started singing 'where's your Dadi gone, where's your Dadi gone?' 😂
In the 1986 world cup, the English fans were chanting, "How does it feel to lose a war?" to the Argentina fans. It was quite entertaining.

In case you didn't know, Maggie was our prime minister back in the 80's. I think it's fairly safe to say she wasn't very popular so when she died, there were a few songs and dancing in the street

She also destroyed the British merchant navy, British steel industry and numerous other manufacturing areas. Helped by her Nottinghamshire scabs (same as 1930) she ravaged the North.

My all time favourite? The Park chant.
The Liverpool fans at number one were only singing what the rest if the country was thinking. Look up Margaret Thatcher prime minister and what she did to the common man in the streets. She closed down lots of mines and the mining communities were devastated - everything tended to revolve around the mine in the pit villages. The mines were the main source if income. Suddenly no mines, no money, communities lost. So you can understand the feelings behind the chant.
One I particularly enjoyed having witnessed first hand in the away end for Birmingham City vs Cardiff City was where the Cardiff fans were outsinging the home crowd, and when the home crowd DID start making some noise, the Cardiff fans retorted with, "We forgot, we forgot, we forgot that you were here! We forgot that you were here!" 😆

The best chant I’ve heard is: Your sister is your mother, your father is your brother, you all f**ked one another, the kiddy family! Chanted to the Addams Family tune. 😂 it’s so pommy to think that one up, 2nd to none for chants.

The best chant I've heard was during an F.A.Cup game between Chelsea and Exeter... Exeter were predictably losing at the time and their fans (to the tune of come by ah m'lord) came up with... "Think your good Chelsea? Think your good. Think your good Chelsea? Think your good. Think your good Chelsea? Think your good. We lose every week!"

Those aren't the most vile, as the Glasgow ones are illegal and then there is a chant directed at Liverpool that is about something that happened in 1989.

Nah, they're all fine Amanda lol, I don't know how the Chelsea fans can claim the Celery song as I was born in London in 1971 and that was sung around the schoolyard in 1976/77. Most of the chants are genuine banter but when there is a direct rivalry that's when the chants can et naughty, the exception to that rule is when someone has committed a crime like Adam Johnson or Stan Collymore then it's open season but in the main the same people who will call each other every c*nt under the sun will be sat in the same office or sit in the same cafeteria with no problem, it's just football, it brings out that tribal instinct in the British and during that 90 minutes anything goes and when it's done it's done.

Not true. If you believe that story, it was gillingham that had celery grow on the pitch in 1980's. Or it could be Mickey Greenaway who started singing it in the stands in the 1980's. Either way it is a parody of "ask old brown to tea" which is a song from 1980's i believe. Was it Chas and Dave?

There used to be a radio programme featuring Frank Muir and Dennis Norden (some episodes available on CZcams). One of the rounds required making up a story around a well known saying. At the time there was a TV ad "hands that do dishes can be soft as your face with mild green fairy liquid. The story went that ther was a chef Jervais and his dish washer Hans. They had live seafood which customers chose for their meal. One offering was a green squid with a hairy lip, caught in the wild. One day a customer chose the squid but Jervais could not bring himself to kill it, so he asked Hans, who also refused. Which goes to show " Hans who does dishes can be soft as Jervais with wild green hairy lipped squid".
Some were not has clever as this but well worth finding.
Other classic comedy shows were "The Goon Show", " I'm Sorry I'll Read that Again" and most recently "I'm Sorry I haven't a clue.". Have a listen. You may wish to comment on one or two of them as well as having a laugh at zany British humour.

Tame by 80s standards in which large numbers,I won't say everyone but usually a majority,sank about murders,deaths,racist chants,terrorists and the Yorkshire ripper even had a song in his honour.
I do like these videos. It's all part of the crack of going to English football. Away days are the best!! As a North End fan. I prefer away days than home games.
As others have said, these are kinda standard and are not really considered shocking in themselves.
Everyone knows they are banter.
It's also a great way to let off steam.
Remember that supporting football teams is passed down over generations. You will often see multiple generational families at a match.

Although not a chant in the traditional sense, when I moved to Birmingham (UK) in the late 80s, a huge song popular with kids from opposing teams (usually Birmingham City) was "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, watching Aston Villa. Aston Villa scored a goal, Humpty fell in the river." They took it pretty seriously back then, but now I just find it kinda funny, "Humpty" being so shocked that AV scored a goal, that he fell in "the river". I'm back on the Wirral again now, where I was originally from & I have to say, while those guys (& some others) from Liverpool give us a bad name (even though we're on the other side of the RIver Mersey), most of the footy fans up here are really lighthearted & fun. I once made the mistake of telling a drunk footy fan on a train that my name's Jude & got half a train carriage of footy fans serenading me with "Hey Jude", even though half of them had no idea why they were singing it! 🤣

Burnley fans at Leeds "You're just a small town in Yorkshire" - to which the Leeds fans replied "You're just a small town in Blackburn" - Blackburn and Burnley have, let's call it a "friendly rivalry", they use the same chants against each other, usually about (but not limited to) incest and bestiality - best not repeated here.
Another Kim Park one was "He'll shoot, he'll score, he'll eat your Labrador".
An ever popular one when bored; "Let's pretend, let's pretend, let's pretend we've scored a goal" followed by rapturous cheering. Not vile in any sense, but sometimes necessary.
You should also watch a video about how the premier luege came to be what it is now. It wasn´t only the Hillsborough. Watch the documentary about the Heyselstadion stadium too.
The two that break me as a football fan were Hillsborough and Bradford City. People talk about where they were when Kennady and Lennon were shot. I can tell you exactly where I was when the news about these disasters broke.

My favorite chant was at the end of a NASCAR race, this television reporter was interviewing the winner. The crowd was chanting "F**k Joe Biden " and the reporter lady said they were chanting "Let's Go Brandon " ( the winner was Brandon) which became a nationwide chant against Biden
Chants and in general the atmosphere in football is a way for people to express their opinions or frustrations. Sometimes it's football rivalries, but other times it goes beyond that. All football clubs are usually linked to regional identity and hardcore fans usually express their left or right wing ideology. So there's a lot of politics involved and drama all the time, even if internal.
I think it's one of the few times when the general populace can get together and rally behind something, even if using their club support as a pretext for it. Hence why tribalism is so prevalent in Europe when it comes to football, it's a sheer contrast to their societal norms.

Amanda, if you can find the Sol Campbell Judas chants it’s absolutely brutal, backstory he left Spurs for Arsenal and later had mental health issues.
I can remember when Stliyan Petrov successfully recovered from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia while at Aston Vila and in the Derby vs Birmingham City the Birmingham fans chanted " Chemo" while he was warming up on the touchline

I remember being on a long bus ride home around 35-40 years ago with some young woman at the back singing the celery chant much the way… except she had the gender swapped from the football supporters in the clip (it was a 'him' being tickled in her version).

Yes European teams do chants as well... and if you think these are bad trust me when I say thay they are nursery rhemes compared to some of the chants you hear in some Eastern European leagues. They aren't vile so much as positively evil.

These are a hand-me-down tribal chants which can be traced back to when humankind was in the early stages of evolution. Charles Darwin would have relished them as evidence of evolution but they weren't in existence in his time.
On a lighter note it's said that football is played by gentlemen and supported by louts whereas rugby is played by louts and followed by gentlemen.
The best one I heard "don't take me home! Please don't take me home! I just don't want to go to work! I wanna stay here drink all your beer! Please don't please don't take me home"

Back in the day, there was a quite horrible chant sung AT Manchester United fans about the Munich Air disaster of 1958. Sang it myself as a very young man, makes me cringe now when I think about it, as a 60 year old. I won't post it here but you can Google it. If you want !

I know Los Angeles Kings fans like to take advantage of opposing players and one or two of our own (our slime bag of a general manager especially)... We have one or two players on our team so horrible that we pick on until they're traded or flat out leave for free agency to become a liability on some other team... I'm on a 100% clip on that last part to the point where one person was to win the jersey off the player's back during the final home game of the season only to have it declined TWICE before the team gave him an ultimatum... You can see why he looked like someone died on the ice... What's worse was that his girlfriend accepted his marriage proposal during the game...and winning that player's jersey was the ultimate slap to the face...
He sold the jersey on eBay the next morning for $5 and still feels like he ripped someone off... I nearly fainted when it sold myself... I didn't think he'd get more than $1 for it... There's still a bunch on #12 jerseys with that player's name that haven't sold and they've been up for 20+ years... Plus all are listed as game used for $100 or more... He was in the penalty box for most of those games and two minutes were longer than the amount of time he was trusted on the ice before doing something stupid... His typical game...skate one shift...get a penalty or two...team is scored on during the power play...and glued to the bench as soon as he comes out of the box... Repeats the same stupid pattern after he talks the coach into letting him play another shift... He was worse on the ice than Twiggy attempting to put on one of Dolly Parton's bras... At least the latter bit would give a chuckle...

Chants now days lot different from when my grandad used go matches. Adam Johnson one is real and Maggie dead one. Whole Liverpool hated government at that time

I laughed at the John Terry chants. Can’t say the same about the last one, which I think was a bit ott. I’m not one to celebrate someone’s death. Not something any of us can escape and I know I wouldn’t like it if people were doing that about my own.

The Maggy chats were understandable. Margret Thatcher closed loads of boat building yards , steel works and coal mines ect all within her term of prime minister. The North took a real beating from all the closers and hugh numbers of people made unemployed.
As Liverpool fans we did celebrate Thatcher death as she helped cover up the Hillsborough Disaster when 97 Liverpool fans died and we got the blame. Few years ago truth came out that it was NOT our fault
